The crochet pattern I will be showing you today is a sea otter crochet pattern. The sea otter will look like this when finished.

Sea Otter Crochet Pattern

Abbreviations

• st – stitch
• sts – stitches
• ch – chain
• sl st – slip stitch
• sc – single crochet
• hdc – half double crochet
• dc – double crochet
• tr – treble crochet

Materials Used

• Small amounts of brown, cream and white cotton or wool.
• Thin black cotton or felt circles for the inner eyes.
• Crochet hook.
• Scissors.
• Thread to sew together.
• Sewing needle.

Head

Make a magic loop.
Row 1: 4 ch, 1 tr, 6 dc, 3 tr, 6 dc, 1 tr, pull loop tight and join with a sl st in 4^th ch.
Row 2: 4 ch, 1 tr in same place as ch, 2 tr, in next st, 2 dc in each of next 6 dc, 2 tr in each of next 3 tr, 2 dc in each of next 6 dc, 2 tr in next tr. Join with a sl st in 4^th ch.
Row 3: 1 ch. 1 sc in each st around.  Join with a sl st in 1^st ch.

Ears

 1 sc in next st, 1 hdc in same st, 2 dc in following st, 1 hdc and 1 sc in same st.  Fasten off.
Miss 12 sts, work another ear the same in the following sts.

Body

Make a magic loop.
Row 1: 4 ch, 1 tr, 6 dc, 3 tr, 6 dc, 1 tr, pull loop tight and join with a sl st in 4^th ch.

Row 2: 4 ch, 1 tr in same place as ch, 2 tr, in next st, 2 dc in each of next 6 dc, 2 tr in each of next 3 tr, 2 dc in each of next 6 dc, 2 tr in next tr. Join with a sl st in 4^th ch.

Row 3: 4 ch, 1 tr in same st, 1 tr in next st, 2 tr in following st. then 1 tr in next tr, (2 dc in next st, 1 dc in each of next 2 sts) 4 times, (2 tr in next st, 1 tr in next st) 3 times, (2 dc in next st, 1 dc in each of next 2 sts) 4 times, (2 tr in next st, 1 tr in next st.  sl st into 4^th ch.

Tail

Ch 18, 1 hdc in 3^rd ch from hook, 1 dc in each of next 4 sts, joined dc over next 2 sts, 1 dc in each of next 2 sts, 1 tr in each st to end. Sl st into body.  Fasten off.

Cheeks (Make 2)

Make a magic loop.
3 ch, 10 dc into loop.  Join with a sl st.  Pull loop tight.  Fasten off.

Mouth

Make 4 ch leaving a longer tail on each end to stitch it to the otter’s head.

Nose

Make a magic loop.
3 ch, 3 dc into loop.  Pull loop tight.  Fasten off.

Outer Eyes (Make 2)

Make a magic loop.
1 ch, 5 sc in circle. Pull loop tight. Sl st into ch.  Fasten off.

Inner Eyes (Make 2)

I used black sewing cotton but you could use a small black felt circle.

Make a magic loop.
3 ch, 10 dc into circle.  Pull circle tight and join with a sl st into 3^rd ch.

Feet (Make 2)

8 ch, 4 tr in 5^th ch from hook, 1 hdc in each of next 2 sts, 3 hdc in next st, 1 hdc in back of next 2 ch, sl st in 4^th ch.  Fasten off.

 Arms

I leave crocheting the arms on until I put the face on the head and join the head to the body

Join cotton to body 1 stitch down from neck on otters’ right side and 4 stitches down from the neck on otters left side.
12 ch, 1 hdc in 3^rd ch from hook. 1 dc in each of next 2 ch, tr in each ch to end.

To make up the crochet pattern

 Weave in endings. Stitch the cheeks together by about 4 stitches and then attach them to the head just under the centre circle.

Attach the nose to the top of the cheeks pushing the pointy piece down into the gap as shown.

Stitch the inner eyes to the outer eyes as shown and attach them to either side of the nose.

Thread the ends of the mouth through from the front to the back at the point under the cheeks and secure them at the back.

Stitch the mouth down.  Sew on 3 whiskers on each side as shown.

Attach the feet to the body just above the tail and pointing out a bit.

Attach the head to the body and then crochet on the arms.
