Welcome to my crochet vulture pattern. This is another request that I received. This is what the finished vulture applique will look like.

Crochet Vulture Pattern
Abbreviations
- st – stitch
- sts – stitches
- ch – chain
- sl st – slip stitch
- sc – single crochet
- hdc – half double crochet
- dc – double crochet
- tr – treble crochet
Materials Used
- Any thickness crochet cotton or yarn, I used Scheepjes Maxi Sugar Rush (162) Black Coffee, (254) Moon Rock, (074) Mercury, (393) Charcoal and (106) Snow White.
- A crochet hook, I used a 1mm hook.
- A darning needle to weave in ends.
- Sewing thread and needle to stitch the vulture together.
- Scissors.
Size
Large Vulture (Using 8 ply yarn & a 3mm hook)
14cm wide x 16.5cm high or 5.5” wide x 6.5” high
Medium vulture (Using 4 ply crochet cotton & a 1.5mm hook)
10cm wide x 10.5cm high or 4” wide x 4.25” high
Small vulture (Using 2 ply crochet cotton & a 1mm hook)
9cm wide x 9cm high or 3.5” wide x 3.5” high
Head
Using (074) Mercury work 4 ch.
Row 1: Work 1 sc in 2nd ch from hook, 1 dc in next st, 1 sc in last st. Turn. (3 sts)
Row 2: 1 ch, work 2 sc in 1st st, 1 sc in next st, 2 sc in last st. Turn. (5 sts)
Row 3: 1 ch, work 1 sc in each st. Turn. (5 sts)
Row 4: 1 ch, work a joined sc over 1st 2 sts, 1 sc in next st, a joined sc over last 2 sts. Turn. (3 sts)
Row 5: 1 ch, work 2 sc in 1st st, a joined sc over last 2 sts. Turn. (3 sts)
Row 6: 1 ch, work a joined sc over 1st 2 sts, 2 sc in last st. Turn. (3 sts)
Row 7: 1 ch, work 1 sc in each st. Turn. (3 sts)
Row 8: 1 ch, work 2 sc in 1st st, 1 sc in each remaining st. Turn. (4 sts)
Row 9: 1 ch, work a joined sc over 1st 2 sts, 1 sc in each remaining st. Turn. (3 sts)
Row 10: 1 ch, work a joined sc over the 3 sts. Don’t turn or fasten off.
Neatening Row
1 ch, work 1 sl st in each st up 1st side, 3 ch, miss 1st ch, work 1 sl st in each remaining ch and each st to end of row. Fasten off.
Beak
Join (393) Charcoal 2 sts below where you worked the 3 ch in neatening row.
Row 1: 1 ch, work 1 sc in same st as ch and 1 sc in next st. Join with a sl st halfway up the 3 ch, sl st in end of 3 ch. Turn. (2 sts)
Row 2: Work a joined sc over the 2 sts. Turn. (1 st)
Row 3: 1 ch, work 1 sc in st, 1 ch. Fasten off.
Neck Feathers
Join (106) Snow White to back of the head where shown.
Row 1: 3 ch, work 1 tr in same st as ch, 2 ch, sl st in top of tr, 1 tr in same st, (1 dc in next st, 2 ch, sl st in top of dc, 1 dc in same st, 1 tr in next st, 2 ch, sl st in top of tr, 1 tr in same st) 2 times. Fasten off.
Body
Using (162) Black Coffee work 7 ch.
Row 1: Miss 1st ch, work 1 sc in each remaining ch. Turn. (6 sts)
Row 2: 1 ch, work 2 sc in 1st st, 1 sc in each st to last st, 2 sc in last st. Turn. (8 sts)
Row 3: 1 ch, work 2 sc in 1st st, 1 sc in each st to last st, 2 sc in last st. Turn. (10 sts)
Row 4: 1 ch, work 1 sc in each st to last st, 2 sc in last st. Turn. (11 sts)
Row 5: 1 ch, work 2 sc in 1st st, 1 sc in each st to last st, 2 sc in last st. Turn. (13 sts)
Rows 6-10: 1 ch, work 1 sc in each st. Turn. (13 sts)
Row 11: 1 ch, work 2 sc in 1st st, 1 sc in each st to end. Turn. (14 sts)
Row 12: 1 ch, work a joined sc over 1st 2 sts, 1 sc in each st to end. Turn. (13 sts)
Rows 13-16: 1 ch, work 1 sc in each st to end. Turn. (13 sts)
Row 17: 1 ch, work 2 sc in 1st st, 1 sc in each st to end. Turn. (14 sts)
Row 18: 1 ch, work 1 sc in each of 1st 7 sts, a joined sc over next 2 sts. Turn. (8 sts)
Row 19: 1 ch, work 2 sc in 1st st, 1 sc in each of next 2 sts, 1 hdc in each st to end. Turn. (9 sts)
Row 20: 2 ch, work 2 hdc in 1st st, 1 hdc in each of next 3 sts, 1 sc in each st to last st, 2 sc in last st. Turn. (11 sts)
Row 21: 1 ch, work 2 sc in 1st st, 1 sc in each of next 3 sts, 1 hdc in each st to last st, miss last st. Turn. (11 sts)
Row 22: 2 ch, work 1 hdc in each of 1st 4 sts, 1 sc in each of last 7 sts. Turn. (11 sts)
Row 23: 1 ch, work 1 sc in each of 1st 3 sts, 1 hdc in each st to end. Turn. (11 sts)
Row 24: 2 ch, work 1 hdc in each of 1st 5 sts, 1 sc in each st to end. Turn. (11 sts)
Row 25: 1 ch, work 1 sc in each st to end. Turn. (11 sts)
Row 26: 1 ch, work 1 sc in each of 1st 5 sts, a joined sc over next 2 sts. Turn. (6 sts)

Row 30: 3 ch, work 1 dc in 1st st, sl st in next st, (2 ch, 1 hdc in same st as ch, sl st in next st) 2 times. Don’t turn or fasten off.
Neatening Row
Work 1 sl st in each st to stitches left on row 25, sl st in 1st 2 sts, (2 ch 1 hdc in same st as ch, sl st in next st) 2 times, 1 sl st in each st down the side to the next lot of stitches left, work a joined dc over the stitches we left, 1 ch, 1 sl st in each st to stitches left on row 28, sl st in 2nd st, 2 ch, 1 dc in same st. Fasten off.
Wing
Using (254) Moon Rock work 4 ch.
Row 1: Work 1 sc in 2nd ch from hook, 1 dc in next ch, 1 sc in last ch. Turn. (3 sts)
Row 2: 1 ch, work 2 sc in 1st st, 1 sc in each st to end. Turn. (4 sts)
Row 3: 1 ch, work 2 sc in 1st st, 1 sc in each st to end. Turn. (5 sts)
Row 4: 1 ch, work 2 sc in 1st st, 1 sc in each st to end. Turn. (6 sts)
Row 5: 1 ch, work 2 sc in 1st st, 1 sc in each st to end. Turn. (7 sts)
Row 6: 1 ch, work 1 sc in each st. Turn. (7 sts)
Row 7: 1 ch, work a joined sc over 1st 2 sts, 1 sc in each st to end. Turn. (6 sts)
Rows 8-9: 1 ch, work 1 sc in each st. Turn. (6 sts)
Row 10: 1 ch, work 1 sc in each of 1st 4 sts, a joined sc over last 2 sts. Turn. (5 sts)
Row 11: 1 ch, work 1 sc in each st. Turn. (5 sts)
Row 12: 1 ch, work 1 sc in each of 1st 3 sts, a joined sc over last 2 sts. Turn. (4 sts)
Row 13: 1 ch, work 1 sc in each st. Turn. (4 sts)
Row 14: 1 ch, work 1 sc in each of 1st 2 sts, a joined sc over last 2 sts. Turn. (3 sts)
Row 15: 1 ch, work 1 sc in 1st st, a joined sc over last 2 sts. Turn. (2 sts)
Row 16: 1 ch, work a joined sc over the 2 sts. Don’t turn or fasten off.
Neatening Row
(4 ch, work 1 tr in same st as ch, sl st in next st) 4 times, sl st in each st to beginning of row. Fasten off.
Leg Feathers (Make 2)
Using (106) Snow White make a magic loop.
Row 1: 1 ch, work 1 sc in circle. Pull circle tight. Turn. (1 st)
Row 2: 1 ch, work 2 sc in st. Turn. (2 sts)
Row 3: 1 ch, work 2 sc in 1st st, 1 sc in last st. Turn. (3 sts)
Row 4-5: 1 ch, work 1 sc in each st. Turn. (3 sts)
Row 6: 1 ch, work 1 sc in each st. Don’t turn or fasten off.
Neatening Row
1 ch, work 1 sl st in each st around. Fasten off.
1st Leg
Join (393) Charcoal to narrow end of leg feathers.
11 ch. Work 1 sl st in 2nd ch from hook, 1 sc in each of next 3 ch, miss following 2 ch, sl st in each ch to end. Sl st in end of leg feathers. Fasten off.
2nd Leg
Join (393) Charcoal to narrow end of leg feathers.
8 ch. Work 1 sl st in 3rd ch from hook, 1 ch, 1 sc in same st as sl st, 4 ch, sl st in 2nd ch from hook, 1 sc in each of next 2 sts, 1 sl st in each remaining ch, sl st in end of leg feathers. Fasten off.
To Make Up
Weave in ends. Embroider an eye on the head.
Stitch the head to the body.
Attach the wing to the body.
Stitch the leg feathers together. Sew the legs to the body.
And there’s the finished vulture applique. I’ve also made it in different sizes and colors.
