Welcome to my crochet volcano pattern. This is a request that I received.  This is what the finished volcano applique will look like.

When I was in my teens and twenties I lived in Rabaul, Papua New Guinea where there were extinct, dormant and active volcanoes.  While I was there we didn’t have any eruptions but had plenty of earthquakes and had evacuation plans prepared.

Two of the volcanoes have been erupting at times since 1994.

When a volcano erupted further down the island we flew down and was able to get some photos.

Crochet Volcano Pattern

Abbreviations 

• st – stitch
• sts – stitches
• ch – chain
• sl st – slip stitch
• sc – single crochet
• hdc – half double crochet
• dc – double crochet
• tr – treble crochet

Materials Used

• Crochet cotton or wool, I used Scheepjes Maxi Sugar Rush or Maxi Sweet Treat 2 ply crochet cotton colours (281) Tangerine, (189) Royal Orange, (162) Black Coffee and (074) Mercury.
• A crochet hook, I used a 1mm hook.
• Scissors.
• Darning needle to weave in ends.
• Sewing thread and needle to stitch the volcano together.

Size

Large volcano (Using 8 ply yarn & a 3mm hook)

19cm x 17.5cm or 7.5” x 7”

Medium volcano (Using 4 ply crochet cotton & a 1.5mm hook)

13cm x 11.5cm or 5” x 4.5”

Small volcano (Using 2 ply crochet cotton & a 1mm hook)

10cm x 8.5cm or 4” x 3.25”

Bottom of Volcano

Using (162) Black Coffee work 21 ch.

 

Row 1:  Miss 1^st ch and work 1 sc in each st to end.  Turn.  (20 sts)

Row 2:  1 ch, work 2 sc in 1^st st, 1 sc in each st to last st, 2 sc in last st.  Turn.  (22 sts)

Row 3:  1 ch, work 2 sc in 1^st st, 1 sc in each st to last st, 2 sc in last st.  Turn.  (24 sts)

Row 4:  1 ch, work 2 sc in 1^st st, 1 sc in each st to last st, 2 sc in last st.  Turn.  (26 sts)

Row 5:  1 ch, work 2 sc in 1^st st, 1 sc in each st to last st, 2 sc in last st.  Turn.  (28 sts)

Row 6:  2 ch, work 2 hdc in 1^st st, 1 sc in each st to last st, 2 hdc in last st.  Turn.  (30 sts)

Row 7:  1 ch, work 2 sc in 1^st st, 1 sc in each st to last st, 2 sc in last st.  Turn.  (32 sts)

Row 8:  2 ch, work 2 hdc in 1^st st, 1 sc in each st to last st, 2 hdc in last st.  Turn.  (34 sts)

Row 9:  1 ch, work 2 sc in 1^st st, 1 sc in each st to last st, 2 sc in last st.  Turn.  (36 sts)

Row 10:  1 ch, work 3 sc in 1^st st, 1 sc in each st to last st, 3 sc in last st.  Don’t turn or fasten off.

Neatening Row

1 ch, work 1 sc in each st along sides and 1 sc, 1 ch and 1 sc in each corner st.  Join with a sl st in top of 1^st st.  Fasten off.

Top of Volcano

Using (281) Tangerine work 7 ch.

 

Row 1:  Work 2 hdc in 3^rd ch from hook, 1 sc in each of next 2 ch, 1 hdc in following st, 2 dc in last st.  Turn.  (7 sts)

Row 2:  1 ch, work 1 sc in each st to end.  Turn.  (7 sts)

Row 3:  1 ch, work 2 sc in 1^st st, 1 sc in each st to last st, 2 sc in last st.  Turn.  (9 sts)

Row 4:  1 ch, work 1 sc in each st to end.  Turn.  (9 sts)

Row 5:  1 ch, work 2 sc in 1^st st, 1 sc in each st to last st, 2 sc in last st.  Turn.  (11 sts)

Row 6:  1 ch, work 1 sc in each st to end.  Turn.  (11 sts)

Row 7:  1 ch, work 2 sc in 1^st st, 1 sc in each st to last st, 2 sc in last st.  Turn.  (13 sts)

Row 8:  1 ch, work 1 sc in each st to end.  Turn.  (13 sts)

Row 9:  1 ch, work 2 sc in 1^st st, 1 sc in each st to last st, 2 sc in last st.  Turn.  (15 sts)

Row 10:  1 ch, work 1 sc in each st to last st, 2 sc in last st.  Turn.  (16 sts)

Row 11:  1 ch, work 1 sc in each st to end.  Turn.  (16 sts)

Row 12:  1 ch, work 2 sc in 1^st st, 1 sc in each st to last st, 2 sc in last st.  Turn.  (18 sts)

Row 13:  1 ch, work 2 sc in 1^st st, 1 sc in each st to last st, 2 sc in last st.  Turn.  (20 sts)

Row 14:  1 ch, work 1 sc in each st to end.  Turn.  (20 sts)

Row 15:  1 ch, work 2 sc in 1^st st, 1 sc in each st to last st, 2 sc in last st.  Turn.  (22 sts)

Row 16:  1 ch, work 1 sc in each st to end.  Turn.  (22 sts)

Row 17:  1 ch, work 2 sc in 1^st st, 1 sc in each st to last st, 2 sc in last st.  Turn.  (24 sts)

Row 18:  1 ch, work 2 sc in 1^st st, 1 sc in each of next 13 sts, a joined sc over following 2 sts.  Turn.  (16 sts)

Row 19:  1 ch, work 1 sc in each of 1^st 4 sts.  Turn.  (4 sts)

Row 20:  1 ch, work 1 sc in each st.  Turn.  (4 sts)

Row 21:  3 ch, miss 1^st ch and work 1 sl st in each remaining ch, sl st in 1^st st of row 20, 2 ch, work 1 sl st in 2^nd ch from hook, sl st in next st of row 20, 3 ch, miss 1^st ch and work 1 sl st in each remaining ch, sl st in next st of row 20, 3 ch, miss 1^st ch and work 1 sl st in each remaining ch, sl st in last st of row 20.  Fasten off.

2nd Section

Join (281) Tangerine to last st of 1^st section.

Row 1:  Work a joined sc over next 2 sts, 1 sc in each of following 3 sts.  Turn.  (4 sts)

Row 2:  1 ch, work 1 sc in each st.  Turn.  (4 sts)

Row 3:  1 ch, work 1 sc in each st.  Turn.  (4 sts)

Row 4:  3 ch, work a sl st in 2^nd ch from hook, 1 sc in next ch, sl st in 1^st st of row 3, 2 ch, sl st in 2^nd ch from hook, 1 sc in each of next 2 sts of row 3, 3 ch, miss 1^st ch and work 1 sl st in each remaining ch, sl st in last st of row 3.  Fasten off.

3rd Section

Join (281) Tangerine to next st after section 2.

Row 1:  1 ch, work 1 sc in same st as ch, 1 sc in each of next 3 sts.  Turn.  (4 sts)

Row 2:  1 ch, work 1 sc in each of 1^st 2 sts, a joined sc over last 2 sts.  Turn.  (3 sts)

Row 3:  3 ch, work 1 sl st in 2^nd ch from hook, 1 hdc in last ch, sl st in 1^st st of row 2, 4 ch, sl st in 2^nd ch from hook, 1 sc in each remaining ch, sl st in next st of row 2, 2 ch, 1 sc in 2^nd ch from hook, sl st in last st of row 2.  Fasten off.

4th Section

Join (281) Tangerine to next st after section 3.

6 ch, work 1 sl st in 2^nd ch from hook, 1 sc in next ch, 1 hdc in each of following 2 ch, 1 dc in last ch, sl st in last st, work 1 sl st in each st up the side to the crater, 3 ch, work 1 dc in first st along top, 1 hdc in next st, 1 sc in each of following 2 sts, 1 hdc in next st, 1 dc in last st, work 1 sl st in each st down side, 7 ch, miss 1^st ch, work 1 sc in each remaining ch, a joined sc over next 2 sts on main piece, 8 ch, miss 1 ch, work 1 sc in each of next 2 ch, 1 hdc in each of following 2 ch, 1 dc in each remaining ch, miss 1 st, sl st in each of next 2 sts on main piece, 9 ch, miss 3 ch, work 1 dc in each of next 4 ch, 1 tr in following ch, 2 tr in last ch, sl st in last st at bottom of section 1.  Fasten off.

Lava Flow

Using (189) Royal Orange work 8 ch.

Work 1 hdc in 3^rd ch from hook, 1 sc in next st, a joined sc over following 2 sts, 1 sc in next st, 1 hdc in last st.  1 ch, sl st in back loop of 1^st ch, 13 ch, miss 1 ch, work 1 hdc in each of next 7 ch, 1 sc in following ch, 2 sc in next ch, 1 sc in each remaining ch, sl st in next st along bottom.  Fasten off.

Join (189) Royal Orange 3 sts from end of side piece where shown.

 

Row 1:  8 ch, miss 1 ch, work 1 sc in each remaining ch and next 4 sts on side.  4 ch.

Row 2:  Miss 1^st ch, work 1 sl st in each remaining ch, 1 sc in each of next 3 sts on main piece, 10 ch.

Row 3:  Miss 1 ch, work 1 sc in each of next 3 ch, 2 dc in following ch, 1 dc in each remaining ch, 1 hdc in each of next 2 sts on main piece, 1 sc in following st.  16 ch.

Row 4:  Miss 2 ch, 1 hdc in each of next 3 ch, 1 sc in each of following 2 ch, 2 hdc in next ch, 1 hdc in each of following 3 ch, 1 hdc and 1 sc in next ch, 1 sc in following ch.  6 ch.

Row 5:  Miss 2 ch, work 1 hdc in each remaining ch and 1^st 2 sts on main piece, 1 ch, sl st in same st as last hdc.  Fasten off.

Join (189) Royal Orange to back loop of 2^nd last ch along top where shown.

26 ch.

Miss 2 ch, work 1 hdc in each of next 5 ch, 1 dc in each of following 3 ch, 2 dc in each of next 2 ch, 1 tr in each of following 5 ch, 2 dc in next ch, 1 hdc in each of following 2 ch, 1 sc in each remaining ch.  Sl st in last st of top.  Fasten off.

Smoke

Using (074) Mercury work 8 ch.

 

Row 1:  Work 2 sc in 2^nd ch from hook, 1 hdc in next st, 1 dc in following st, 2 tr in next st, 1 dc in following st, 1 hdc in next st, 2 sc in last st.  Turn.  (10 sts)

Row 2:  1 ch, work 2 sc in 1^st st, 1 sc in each st to end.  3 ch.  (11 sts + 3 ch)

Row 3:  Miss 1 ch, work 1 sc in each st to end.  3 ch.  (13 sts + 3 ch)

Row 4:  Miss 1 ch, work 1 sc in each st to end.  Turn.  (15 sts)

Row 5:  1 ch, work 1 sc in each st to end.  Turn.  (15 sts)

Row 6:  1 ch, work a joined sc over 1^st 2 sts, 1 sc in each st to last 2 sts, a joined sc over last 2 sts.  Turn.  (13 sts)

Row 7:  1 ch, sl st into 1^st 2 sts, work a joined sc over next 2 sts, 1 sc in each of next 6 sts, a joined sc over following 2 sts.  Turn.  (8 sts)

Row 8:  1 ch, work a joined sc over 1^st 2 sts, 1 sc in each of next 4 sts, a joined sc over last 2 sts.  Turn.  (6 sts)

Row 9:  1 ch, work a joined sc over all sts.  Don’t turn or fasten off.

Neatening Row

(Work 2 hdc in next st and 1 sl st in following st) repeat around.  Join with a sl st in top of 1^st st.  Fasten off.

To Make Up

Weave in ends.  Stitch the lava flow to the top of volcano where shown.

Sew the bottom of the volcano in behind the top of the volcano.

Attach the smoke in behind the crater.

And there’s the finished volcano applique. I’ve also made it in different sizes.
