Welcome to my dinosaur crochet applique pattern. Today I’ll be showing you how to make this crochet brachiosaurus.

Dinosaur Crochet Applique Pattern (Brachiosaurus)

Abbreviations

  • st – stitch
  • sts – stitches
  • ch – chain
  • sl st – slip stitch
  • sc – single crochet
  • hdc – half double crochet
  • dc – double crochet
  • tr – treble crochet

Materials Used 

  • I used green, light green, black and white 4 ply crochet cotton.
  • A crochet hook, I used a 1.25mm hook.
  • Scissors.
  • Thread to sew the eye and legs on the dinosaur.
  • White thread to embroider a dot on the eye. Sewing needle.
  • Darning needle to weave in ends.

Size

Large dinosaur (Using 8 ply wool)

14cm x 16cm or 5.5” x 6.5”

Medium dinosaur (Using 4 ply crochet cotton)

10cm x 10cm or 4” x 4”

Head

Make a magic loop.

1 ch, work 12 hdc into circle.  Pull circle tight and join with a sl st in top of 1st st.  Don’t fasten off.

Neck

19 ch.

Miss 3 ch, work a joined dc over next 2 sts, 1 joined dc over following 2 sts, 1 dc in each of next 5 sts, 1 hdc in each of following 5 sts, 2 hdc in next st, a joined hdc over last ch and next st on head, a joined hdc over next 2 sts, 1 hdc in following st, sl st in next st.  Fasten off.

Body

Join in 1st st at bottom of neck as shown.

Row 1:  1 ch, work 2 sc in each of the 3 sts.  Turn.  (6 sts)

Row 2:  1 ch, work 2 sc in 1st st, 1 sc in each of next 2 sts, 1 hdc in each of following 2 sts, 1 dc in last st.  Turn.  (7 sts)

Row 3:  3 ch, work 1 dc in each of next 2 sts, 1 hdc in each of following 2 sts, 1 sc in each st to last st, 2 sc in last st.  Turn.  (8 sts)

Row 4:  3 ch, work 3 dc in 1st st, 1 hdc in next st, 1 sc in each of following 3 sts, 1 hdc in each of next 2 sts, 1 dc in last st.  Turn.  (10 sts)

Row 5:  3 ch, work 1 dc in each of 1st 2 sts, 1 hdc in each of next 2 sts, 1 sc in each st to last st, 3 sc in last st.  Turn.  (12 sts)

Row 6:  1 ch, work 2 sc in 1st st, 1 sc in each st to last 4 sts, 1 hdc in each of next 2 sts, 1 dc in each of last 2 sts.  Turn.  (13 sts)

Row 7:  3 ch, work 1 dc in each of 1st 2 sts, 1 hdc in each of next 3 sts, 1 sc in each st to last 2 sts, 1 hdc in next st, 1 dc in last st.  Turn.  (13 sts)

Row 8:  1 ch, work a joined sc over 1st 2 sts, 1 sc in each st to last 2 sts, a joined sc over last 2 sts.  Turn.  (11 sts)

Row 9:  1 ch, work 1 sc in each st to end.  Turn.  (11 sts)

Row 10:  1 ch, work a joined sc over 1st 2 sts, 1 sc in each st to end.  Turn.  (10 sts)

Row 11:  1 ch, work 1 sc in each st to last 2 sts, a joined sc over last 2 sts.  Turn.  (9 sts)

Row 12:  1 ch, work a joined sc over 1st 2 sts, 1 sc in each st to last 2 sts, a joined sc over last 2 sts.  Turn.  (7 sts)

Row 13:  1 ch, work 1 sc in each st to last 2 sts, a joined sc over last 2 sts.  Turn.  (6 sts)

Row 14:  1 ch, work a joined sc over 1st 2 sts, 1 sc in each st to end.  Turn.  (5 sts)

Row 15:  1 ch, work 1 sc in each st to end.  Turn.  (5 sts)

Row 16:  1 ch, work a joined sc over 1st 2 sts, 1 sc in next st and a joined sc over last 2 sts.  Don’t fasten off.

Tail

18 ch.

Sl st in 2nd ch from hook, 1 sc in each of next 5 sts, 2 hdc in following st, 1 hdc in each of next 3 sts, 3 hdc in following st, 2 dc in each of next 2 sts, 1 tr in each remaining ch, sl st in top of body.  Don’t fasten off.

Neatening Row

Work sc around body, sl st up the neck, sc around the head, sl st down the neck, sc down the body and sl st into 1st st on tail.  Fasten off.  (Work 2 sc or sl st in a stitch when needed and a joined sc or sl st when needing to pull the curves in a bit.)

Tummy Marking

Join contrast colour to bottom of body 5 sts along from start of tail on wrong side, as shown.

1 ch, working only into the front loop on the wrong side work 1 sc in each of next 3 sts, 2 hdc in following st, 1 hdc in each of next 2 sts, 2 dc in following st, 1 dc in each of next 3 sts, 2 hdc in following st, 1 hdc in each of next 3 sts, 1 sc in each st to st before neck, 1 sl st in following st.  Fasten off.

Outer Eye

Using white make a magic loop.

1 ch, work 4 sc into circle, pull circle tight and sl st in top of 1st st.  Fasten off.

Inner Eye

Using black make a magic loop.

1 ch, work 2 sl st into circle.  Pull circle tight and join with a sl st in ch.  Fasten off.

Legs (Make 4)

Using main colour make a magic loop.

Row 1:  3 ch, into circle work 3 dc.  Pull circle tight.  Turn.

Row 2:  3 ch, work 1 dc in each st.  Turn.

Row 3:  3 ch, work 1 dc in each st. Don’t fasten off.

Neatening Row

Work 1 sl st in each st around sides and bottom and 1 sc in each st across the top.  Fasten off.

To Make Up

Weave in ends.  Turn tummy marking up over body and stitch it in place.

Embroider a white dot on the inner eye.

Sew the inner eye to the outer eye.

Stitch the eye to the head.

Sew the dinosaur’s left legs to the body as shown.

Attach the dinosaur’s right legs behind the body, sticking out slightly forward of the left legs but not as low.
