Welcome to my crochet rat pattern. This pattern was another request. This is what the finished rat applique will look like.

Crochet Rat Pattern

Abbreviations

st – stitch
sts – stitches
ch – chain
sl st – slip stitch
sc – single crochet
hdc – half double crochet
dc – double crochet
tr – treble crochet

Materials Used

Any thickness crochet cotton or yarn, I used Scheepjes Maxi Sweet Treat 2 ply crochet cotton colors (106) Snow White and (238) Powder Pink.
A crochet hook, I used a 1mm hook.
A darning needle to weave in ends.
Thread and needle to stitch the rat together and black thread to embroider on the eye, mouth and whiskers.

Scissors.

Size

Large rat (Using 8 ply yarn & a 3mm hook)

12cm wide x 7cm high or 4.75” wide x 2.75” high

Medium rat (Using 4 ply crochet cotton & a 1.5mm hook)

9cm wide x 5cm high or 3.5” wide x 2” high

Small rat (Using 2 ply crochet cotton & a 1mm hook)

6cm wide x 4cm high or 2.25” wide x 1.5” high

Head & Body

Using (106) Snow White make a magic loop,

Row 1: 2 ch, work 2 hdc in circle. Pull circle tight. Turn. (2 sts)

Row 2: 1 ch, work 1 sc in 1^st st, 2 sc in last st. Turn. (3 sts)

Row 3: 1 ch, work 1 sc in each of 1^st 2 sts, 2 sc in last st. Turn. (4 sts)

Row 4: 1 ch, work 2 sc in 1^st st, 1 sc in each st to end. Turn. (5 sts)

Row 5: 1 ch, work 1 sc in each of 1^st 4 sts, 2 sc in last st. Turn. (6 sts)

Row 6: 1 ch, work 1 sc in each of 1^st 3 sts, 1 hdc in each of last 3 sts. Turn. (6 sts)

Rows 7-8: 1 ch, work 1 sc in each st. Turn. (6 sts)

Row 9: 1 ch, work 2 sc in 1^st st, 1 sc in each st to last st, 2 sc in last st. Turn. (8 sts)

Row 10: 1 ch, work 1 sc in each st. Turn. (8 sts)

Row 11: 1 ch, work 2 sc in 1^st st, 1 sc in each st to end. Turn. (9 sts)

To make the rat look like a mouse miss rows 14 and 15.

Rows 12-15: 1 ch, work 1 sc in each st. Turn. (9 sts)

Row 16: 1 ch, work 1 sc in each of 1^st 7 sts, a joined sc over last 2 sts. Turn. (8 sts)

Row 17: 1 ch, work a joined sc over 1^st 2 sts, 1 sc in each st to end. Turn. (7 sts)

Row 18: 1 ch, work 1 sc in each st. Turn. (7 sts)

Row 19: 1 ch, work a joined sc over 1^st 2 sts, 1 sc in each of next 3 sts, a joined sc over last 2 sts. Turn. (5 sts)

Row 20: 1 ch, work 1 sc in 1^st st, 1 hdc in next st, 1 dc in following st, a joined sc over last 2 sts. Don’t fasten off.

Neatening Row

Turn work before neatening row.

1 ch, work 1 sc in each st to end of nose, 1 sc, 1 ch and 1 sc in end of nose, 1 sc in each st to end of row. Join with a sl st in top of 1^st st. Fasten off.

Tail

Join (238) Powder Pink to bottom where shown.

Work 21 ch.

Miss 1^st ch, work 1 sl st in each of next 3 ch, 1 sc in each of following 8 ch, (a joined sc over next 2 ch) 3 times, 1 sc in each remaining ch, sl st in next st on body. Fasten off.

Ears (Make 2)

Using (238) Powder Pink make a magic loop.

2 ch, work 3 dc in circle, 2 ch, sl st in circle. Pull circle tight. Fasten off. I left a long tail to stitch the ears to the head.

Back Leg

Join (238) Powder Pink to bottom of body 4 stitches on from tail.

1 ch, work 1 sc in same st as join, 1 sc in next st, 4 ch, sl st in 2^nd ch from hook, 2 ch, sl st in same st as last sl st, 1 sl st in each of last 2 ch, sl st in bottom of last sc. Fasten off.

Near Front Leg

Using (106) Snow White work 3 ch.

Row 1: Miss 1 ch, work a joined sc over last 2 ch. Turn. (1 st)

Row 2: 1 ch, work 1 sc in st. Fasten off. I left a long tail to attach it to the body

Join (238) Powder Pink in st of row 2.

3 ch, miss 1^st ch, work 1 sl st in each remaining ch, sl st in sc from row 2. Fasten off.

Far Front Leg

Join (106) Snow White in back loop only about 4 sts back from neck.

Row 1: 1 ch, work 1 sc in same st as join. Fasten off.

Join (238) Powder Pink in st of row 1.

3 ch, miss 1^st ch, work 1 sl st in each remaining ch, sl st in sc from row 1. Fasten off.

To Make Up

Weave in ends. Attach ears to the head.

Stitch near front leg just behind far front leg.

Embroider on eye, mouth and whiskers.
