Welcome to my crochet pigeon pattern. This pattern was another request. This is what the finished pigeon applique will look like.

Crochet Pigeon Pattern

Abbreviations

  • st – stitch
  • sts – stitches
  • ch – chain
  • sl st – slip stitch
  • dc – double crochet
  • htr – half treble crochet
  • tr – treble crochet

Materials Used

  • Any thickness crochet cotton or yarn, I used Scheepjes Maxi Sweet Treat 2 ply crochet cotton colours (242) Metal Grey, (393) Charcoal, (074) Mercury, (254) Moon Rock, (404) English Tea and (110) Black.
  • A crochet hook, I used a 1mm hook.
  • A darning needle to weave in ends.
  • Thread and needle to stitch the pigeon together.
  • Black, brown and green or pink thread to embroider on the eye and markings.
  • Scissors.

Crochet pigeon 2 ply cotton

Size

Large pigeon (Using 8 ply yarn & a 3mm hook)

14cm wide x 11cm high or 5.5” wide x 4.25” high

Medium pigeon (Using 4 ply crochet cotton & a 1.5mm hook)

9cm wide x 7cm high or 3.5” wide x 2.75” high

Small pigeon (Using 2 ply crochet cotton & a 1mm hook)

7.5cm wide x 6cm high or 3.5” wide x 2.5” high

Head

Using (242) Metal Grey work 5 ch.

 

Row 1:  Work 1 dc in 2nd ch from hook, 1 tr in each of next 2 sts, 1 dc in last st.  Turn.  (4 sts)

Row 2:  1 ch, work 1 dc in each st.  Turn.  (4 sts)

Row 3:  1 ch, work a joined dc over 1st 2 sts, 1 dc in each of last 2 sts.  Turn.  (3 sts)

Join in (393) Charcoal leaving a long tail at beginning for neatening row and leave the Metal Grey joined working over it to take it to the other side.

Row 4:  2 ch, work 2 htr in 1st st, 1 dc in next st, 2 dc in last st.  Turn.  (5 sts)

Row 5:  2 ch, work 2 htr in 1st st, 1 dc in each of next 3 sts, 2 dc in last st.  Turn.  (7 sts)

Row 6:  1 ch, work 1 dc in each st.  Turn.  (7 sts)

Row 7:  1 ch, work 1 dc in each of 1st 6 sts, 2 dc in last st.  Turn.  (8 sts)

Row 8:  1 ch, work 2 dc in 1st st, 1 dc in each st to end.  Turn.  (9 sts)

Row 9:  1 ch, work 1 dc in each of 1st 8 sts, 2 dc in last st.  Turn.  (10 sts)

Row 10:  1 ch, work 2 dc in 1st st, 1 dc in each remaining st.  Turn.  (11 sts)

Join in (074) Mercury leaving a tail for the neatening row working over it to take it to the other side and leave the Charcoal attached for neatening row.

Row 11:  1 ch, work 1 dc in each of 1st 10 sts, 2 htr in last st.  Turn.  (12 sts)

Row 12:  2 ch, work 2 htr in 1st st, 1 dc in each of next 9 sts, a joined dc over last 2 sts.  Turn.  (12 sts)

Row 13:  1 ch, work a joined dc over 1st 2 sts, 1 dc in each st to end.  Turn.  (11 sts)

Row 14:  2 ch, work 2 htr in 1st st, 1 htr in each of next 4 sts, 1 dc in each of following 4 sts, a joined dc over last 2 sts.  Turn.  (11 sts)

Row 15:  1 ch, work a joined dc over 1st 2 sts, 1 dc in each of next 8 sts, 2 dc in last st.  Turn.  (11 sts)

Row 16:  1 ch, work 2 dc in 1st st, 1 dc in each of next 7 sts, a joined dc over last 3 sts.  Turn.  (10 sts)

Row 17:  1 ch, work a joined dc over 1st 3 sts, 1 dc in each of next 6 sts, 2 dc in last st Don’t fasten off.

Crochet pigeon 2 ply head and body 

Neatening Row

Turn work before neatening row.

 

Using the colours of the piece work 1 ch, work 1 sl st in each st around.  Join with a sl st in ch.  Fasten off.

Tail

Join (393) Charcoal to corner of body where shown.

14 ch.

 

Miss 1st ch, work 1 dc in each of next 2 ch, 1 htr in each of following 2 ch, 1 tr in each remaining ch, miss 1 st along bottom, sl st in back loop of next st.  Fasten off.

Join (393) Charcoal to front loop of stitch after tail.

Row 1:  11 ch, miss 1st ch, work 1 dc in each of next 5 ch, 1 htr in each of following 4 ch, 3 htr in last ch, sl st in front loop of next 2 sts along body.  Turn.

Row 2:  Working into front loop only work 3 htr in 1st st, 1 htr in each of next 4 sts, 1 dc in each of following 4 sts, 2 ch, 1 htr in the side of last dc, 2 ch, turn and sl st near bottom of htr.  3 ch.

Row 3:  Miss 1st ch, work 1 dc in each of last 2 ch, working into back loop only work 1 dc in each of 1st 6 sts, 1 htr in each remaining st, 2 tr in body at last sl st worked, miss next st along body, sl st in following st.  Fasten off.

Back Leg

Join (242) Metal Grey in back loop in st after tail.

Row 1:  Working into back loop only work 1 sl st in next st, 2 dc in following st, 1 dc in next st.  Turn.

Row 2:  2 ch, work 1 htr in 1st st, 1 dc in last st.  Fasten off.

Front Leg

Join (074) Mercury in front loop only 3 sts after tail.

Row 1:  Working into front loop only work 1 ch, 1 dc in each of 1st 3 sts.  Turn.

Row 2:  1 ch, work a joined dc over 1st 2 sts, 1 dc in last st.  Turn.

Row 3:  2 ch, work 1 htr in 1st st, 1 dc in last st.  Turn.

Row 4:  1 ch, work a joined dc and htr over the 2 sts.  Fasten off.

Claws (work 2)

Join (254) Moon Rock to 1st st at end of leg.

5 ch, work 1 sl st and 1 dc in 2nd ch from hook, 1 dc in each of next 2 ch, 4 ch, sl st in 2nd ch from hook, 1 htr in next ch, 1 dc in last ch, sl st in dc from 1st side, 1 dc in 1st ch of claw, sl st in end of leg.  Fasten off.

Beak

Join (404) English Tea halfway down front of head.

3 ch, work 1 sl st in 2nd ch from hook, 1 dc in last ch, sl st in next st on head.  Fasten off.

 

Join (074) Mercury to same st as join for 1st part of beak.

Work 1 sl st in back of each ch, sl st in end of beak.  Fasten off.

Wing

Using (074) Mercury work 8 ch.

 

Row 1:  Miss 1st ch, work 1 dc in each remaining ch.  Turn.  (7 sts)

Row 2:  1 ch, work 2 dc in 1st st, 1 dc in each of next 5 sts, 2 dc in last st.  Turn.  (9 sts)

Row 3:  1 ch, work 1 dc in each of 1st 7 sts, a joined dc over last 2 sts.  Turn.  (8 sts)

Row 4:  1 ch, work 1 dc in each of 1st 7 sts, 2 dc in last st.  Turn.  (9 sts)

Row 5:  1 ch, work 1 dc in each st.  Turn.  (9 sts)

Row 6:  1 ch, work a joined dc over 1st 2 sts, 1 dc in each of next 6 sts, 2 dc in last st.  Turn.  (9 sts)

Row 7:  1 ch, work a joined dc over 1st 2 sts, 1 dc in each of next 5 sts, a joined dc over last 2 sts. Turn.  (7 sts)

Row 8:  1 ch, work a joined dc over 1st 2 sts, 1 htr in next st, 1 tr in following st, 1 htr in next st, a joined dc over last 2 sts.  Don’t turn or fasten off.

Neatening Row

1 ch, work 1 sl st in each st around to beginning of row 8.  Fasten off.

 

Join (110) Black to 1st st of narrower side of wing.

1 ch, work 1 dc in 1st st, (1 htr in next st, 1 dc in following st) 3 times. 1 sl st in each of next 3 sts.  Fasten off.

Join in (074) Mercury to 1st st of Black.

1 ch, work 1 dc in 1st st, 1 tr in each of next 5 sts, 1 dc in following st, 1 sl st in each of next 3 sts.  Fasten off.

Join (110) Black to 1st st of last row.

2 ch, work 1 tr in 1st st, 1 dc in each of next 5 sts, 1 sl st in next st.  Fasten off.

Join (074) Mercury to 1st st of last row.

2 ch, work 1 htr in 1st st, 1 tr in each of next 2 sts, 1 htr in following st, sl st in next st.  Fasten off.

To Make Up

Weave in ends.  Embroider markings on neck.
