Welcome to my crochet octopus pattern. This is what the finished octopus applique will look like.

Crochet Octopus Pattern
Abbreviations
- st – stitch
- sts – stitches
- ch – chain
- sl st – slip stitch
- sc – single crochet
- hdc – half double crochet
- dc – double crochet
- tr – treble crochet
Materials Used
- Any thickness crochet cotton or yarn, I used Scheepjes Maxi Sweet Treat 2 ply crochet cotton colors (105) Bridal White, (201) Electric Blue for the spots if desired and a tiny bit of (404) English Tea for the outer eyes or you could use the Bridal White.
- A crochet hook, I used a 1mm hook.
- A darning needle to weave in ends.
- Scissors.
- Sewing thread and a needle to stitch the octopus together.
- Some black thread for the eye markings if desired.
Size
Large octopus (Using 8 ply yarn & a 3mm hook)
17cm wide x 17cm high or 6.5” wide x 6.5” high
Medium octopus (Using 4 ply crochet cotton & a 1.5mm hook)
12cm wide x 12cm high or 4.75” wide x 4.75” high
Small octopus (Using 2 ply crochet cotton & a 1mm hook)
8cm wide x 8cm high or 3” wide x 3” high
Head & Body
Using (105) Bridal White work 4 ch.
Row 1: Work 1 sc in 2nd ch from hook, 2 dc in next st, 1 sc in last st. Turn. (4 sts)
Row 2: 1 ch, work 2 sc in 1st st, 1 sc in each st to last st, 2 sc in last st. Turn. (6 sts)
Row 3: 1 ch, work 2 sc in 1st st, 1 sc in each st to last st, 2 sc in last st. Turn. (8 sts)
Row 4: 1 ch, work 2 sc in 1st st, 1 sc in each st to last st, 2 sc in last st. Turn. (10 sts)
Row 5: 1 ch, work 2 sc in 1st st, 1 sc in each st to last st, 2 sc in last st. Turn. (12 sts)
Row 6: 1 ch, work 1 sc in each st. Turn. (12 sts)
Row 7: 1 ch, work a joined sc over 1st 2 sts, 1 sc in each st to last 2 sts, a joined sc over last 2 sts. Turn. (10 sts)
Row 8: 1 ch, work 1 sc in each st. Turn. (10 sts)
Row 9: 1 ch, work a joined sc over 1st 2 sts, 1 sc in each st to end. Turn. (9 sts)
Row 10: 1 ch, work 1 sc in each st. Turn. (9 sts)
Row 11: 1 ch, work a joined sc over 1st 2 sts, 1 sc in each st to last 2 sts, a joined sc over last 2 sts. Turn. (7 sts)
Row 12: 1 ch, work a joined sc over 1st 2 sts, 1 sc in each st to end. Turn. (6 sts)
Row 13: 1 ch, work 1 sc in each st. Turn. (6 sts)
Row 14: 1 ch, work 1 sc in each st to last st, 3 sc in last st. Turn. (8 sts)
Row 15: 1 ch, work 3 sc in 1st st, 1 sc in each st to last st, 3 sc in last st. Turn. (12 sts)
Row 16: 1 ch, work 3 sc in 1st st, 1 sc in each st to last st, 3 sc in last st. Turn. (16 sts)
Row 17: 1 ch, work 1 sc in each st to last st, 2 sc and 1 hdc in last st. Turn. (18 sts)
Row 18: 1 ch, work 1 sc in each st. Turn. (18 sts)
Row 19: 1 ch, work 1 sc in each st to last st, miss last st. (17 sts). Don’t fasten off.
1st Leg
16 ch.
Miss 1st 2 ch, work 1 hdc in each of next 2 ch, 2 hdc in following ch, 1 dc in next st, 2 dc in following st, 1 dc in next st, a joined dc over next 3 sts, a joined dc over following 2 sts, 1 dc in each ch to last ch, 2 tr in last ch. Join to body with a sl st. Don’t fasten off.
Neatening Row
Work 1 sl st in each st around head and to start of 2nd last row of body where shown. Don’t fasten off.
2nd Leg
18 ch.
Work 1 hdc in 3rd ch from hook, 2 hdc in following st, 1 hdc in next st, 2 dc in each of following 3 sts, (1 dc in next st, 2 dc in following st) 2 times, 1 dc in each st to last 2 ch, a joined tr over last 2 ch. Sl st in 1st st along bottom of body.
3rd Leg
24 ch.
Miss 1st 2 ch, work 1 hdc in each of next 2 sts, (a joined hdc over next 2 sts) 2 times, 1 hdc in following st, 1 dc in next st, (a joined dc over following 2 sts, 1 dc in each of next 2 sts) 2 times, 1 dc in each st to last st, 2 tr in last st. Miss 3 st along body, sl st in next st.
4th Leg
25 ch.
Miss 1st 2 ch, work 1 hdc in each of next 5 ch, 2 dc in following st, 1 dc in each of next 7 sts, 1 tr in each remaining ch, miss 3 sts along body, sl st in next st.
5th Leg
21 ch.
Work 1 hdc in 3rd ch from hook, (a joined hdc over next 2 sts) 2 times, 1 hdc in following st, a joined dc over next 2 sts, 1 dc in each of following 4 sts, 2 dc in next st, 1 tr in each remaining ch, miss 2 sts along body, sl st in next st.
6th Leg
Sl st in 1st 2 sts of 5th leg. 18 ch.
Miss 1st 2 ch, 1 hdc in each of next 2 sts, 2 hdc in following st, 2 dc in each of next 2 sts, 1 dc in each of following 7 sts, 1 tr in each remaining ch and 1 tr and a joined tr over last couple of sts of 5th leg. Miss 2 sts on body, sl st in next st.
7th Leg
Sl st in 1st 3 sts of 6th leg. 20 ch.
Miss 1st 2 ch, work 1 hdc in each of next 6 ch, 2 dc in each of following 2 sts, 1 dc in each of next 6 sts, 1 tr in each remaining ch and next 2 sts at end of 6th leg, miss last st. Sl st in bottom of 1st leg. Fasten off.
8th Leg
Using (105) Bridal White work 24 ch.
Miss 2 ch, work 1 dc in each of next 7 sts, (a joined dc over following 2 sts, 1 dc in each of next 2 sts) 2 times, 1 hdc in each of following 2 sts, a joined hdc over next 2 sts, 1 hdc in following st, a joined hdc over last 2 sts, 2 ch, sl st in last st. Fasten off.
Outer Eyes (Make 2)
Using (404) English Tea make a magic loop.
1 ch, work 8 hdc in circle. Pull circle tight and join with a sl st in top of 1st st. Fasten off.
Inner Eyes (Make 2)
Using (105) Bridal White make a magic loop.
1 ch, work 4 sc in circle. Pull circle tight and join with a sl st in top of 1st st. Fasten off.
Spots (Make about 24 if desired)
Using (201) Electric Blue make a magic loop.
1 ch, work 3 sc in circle. Pull circle tight and join with a sl st in top of 1st st. Fasten off, I left a long tail to stitch it to the octopus.
To Make Up
Weave in ends. Embroider a dash on each inner eye.
Stitch the inner eyes to the outer eyes.
Attach the eyes to the head.
Bend the ends of 4th and 7th legs over and sew them down.
Stitch the 8th leg in behind the other legs.
Sew on the spots if desired.
