Welcome to my crochet mermaid pattern. This was another request. This is what the finished mermaid applique will look like.

Crochet Mermaid Pattern
Abbreviations
- st – stitch
- sts – stitches
- ch – chain
- sl st – slip stitch
- sc – single crochet
- hdc – half double crochet
- dc – double crochet
- tr – treble crochet
Materials Used
- 4 or 5 colours of crochet cotton or wool, I used Scheepjes Maxi Sweet Treat 2 ply crochet cotton colours (130) Old Lace, (208) Yellow Gold, (106) Snow White and (400) Petrol Blue.
- A crochet hook, I used a 1mm hook.
- Scissors.
- Darning needle to weave in ends.
- Sewing thread and needle to stitch the mermaid together. 2 small black beads for the eyes if desired.
- A bead for the flower centre if desired.
Mermaid with purple tail
I used Scheepjes Maxi Sweet Treat colours (521) Deep Violet, (162) Black Coffee, (404) English Tea and (519) Fresia.
Mermaid with pink tail
I used Scheepjes Maxi Sweet Treat colours (786) Fuchsia, (404) English Tea, (105) Bridal White and (400) Petrol Blue.
Mermaid with dark green tail
I used Scheepjes Maxi Sweet Treat colours (606) Grass Green, (254) Moon Rock, (105) Bridal White and (208) Yellow Gold.
Mermaid with light green tail
I used Scheepjes Maxi Sweet Treat colours (212) Sage Green, (254) Moon Rock, (105) Bridal White and (208) Yellow Gold.
Mermaid with orange hair
I used Scheepjes Maxi Sweet Treat colours (606) Grass Green, (189) Royal Orange, (105) Bridal White, (521) Deep Purple and (208) Yellow Gold.
Mermaid with black hair
I used Scheepjes Maxi Sweet Treat colours (400) Petrol Blue, (254) Moon Rock, (110) Black, (106) Snow White and (722) Red.
Size
Large mermaid (Using 8 ply yarn & a 3mm hook)
16cm x 22.5cm or 6.25” x 8.75”
Medium mermaid (Using 4 ply crochet cotton & a 1.5mm hook)
11cm x 15.5cm or 4.25” x 6”
Small mermaid (Using 2 ply crochet cotton & a 1mm hook)
8.5cm x 10cm or 3.25” x 4”
Head
Using (130) Old Lace work 4 ch.
Row 1: Work 1 sc in 2nd ch from hook, 1 dc in next st and 1 sc in last st. Turn. (3 sts)
Row 2: 1 ch, work 3 sc in 1st st, 1 sc in next st, 3 sc in last st. Turn. (7 sts)
Row 3: 1 ch, work 2 sc in 1st st, 1 sc in each st to last st, 2 sc in last st. Turn. (9 sts)
Row 4: 2 ch, work 2 hdc in 1st st, 1 sc in each st to last st, 2 hdc in last st. Turn. (11 sts)
Row 5: 2 ch, work 1 hdc in 1st st, 1 sc in each st to last st, 1 hdc in last st. Turn. (11 sts)
Row 6: 1 ch, work 1 sc in each st to end. Turn. (11 sts)
Row 7: 1 ch, work 1 sc in each st to end. Turn. (11 sts)
Row 8: 1 ch, work a joined sc over 1st 2 sts, 1 sc in each st to last 2 sts, a joined sc over last 2 sts. Turn. (9 sts)
Row 9: 1 ch, work a joined sc over 1st 2 sts, 1 sc in each st to last 2 sts, a joined sc over last 2 sts. (7 sts). Don’t fasten off.
Neatening Row
1 ch, work 1 sc in each st around. Join with a sl st in top of 1st st. Fasten off.
Front of Hair
Using (208) Yellow Gold work 4 ch.
Row 1: Miss 1st ch and work 1 sc in each st to end. Turn. (3 sts)
Row 2: 1 ch, work 2 sc in 1st st, 1 sc in next st, 2 sc in last st. 5 ch. (5 sts + 5 ch)
Row 3: Miss 1st ch and work 1 sc in each st to last st, 3 sc in last st. Turn. (11 sts)
Row 4: 1 ch, work 2 sc in 1st st, 1 sc in each st to last st, 2 sc in last st. Turn. (13 sts)
Row 5: 1 ch, work 1 sc in each st to last st, 2 sc in last st. Turn. (14 sts)
1st Side
Row 6: 1 ch, work 2 sc in 1st st, 1 sc in each of next 5 sts, a joined sc over following 2 sts. Turn. (8 sts)
Row 7: 1 ch, work a joined sc over 1st 2 sts, 1 sc in each st to last st, 2 sc in last st. Turn. (8 sts)
Row 8: 1 ch, work 1 sc in each st to last 2 sts, a joined sc over last 2 sts. Turn. (7 sts)
Row 9: 1 ch, work a joined sc over 1st 2 sts, 1 sc in each st to last st, 2 sc in last st. Turn. (7 sts)
Row 10: 1 ch, work a joined sc over 1st 2 sts, 1 sc in each of next 2 sts, a joined sc over last 3 sts. Turn. (4 sts)
Row 11: 1 ch, work a joined sc over all sts. Fasten off.
2nd Side
Join (208) Yellow Gold to next st of row 6 after 1st side.
Row 1: 1 ch, work a joined sc over next 2 sts, 1 sc in each st to end. Turn. (4 sts)
Row 2: 1 ch, work 1 sc in each of 1st 2 sts, a joined sc over last 2 sts. Turn. (3 sts)
Row 3: 1 ch, work a joined sc over 1st 2 sts, 1 sc in last st. Turn. (2 sts)
Row 4: 1 ch, work a joined sc over both sts. Don’t fasten off
Neatening Row
Turn before neatening row.
1 ch, work 1 sc in each st around. Join with a sl st in top of 1st st. Fasten off.
Back of Hair
Using (208) Yellow Gold work 16 ch.
Row 1: Miss 1 ch and work 1 sc in each st to end. Turn. (15 sts)
Row 2: 1 ch, work 1 sc in each st to last 2 sts, a joined sc over last 2 sts. Turn. (14 sts)
Row 3: 1 ch, work a joined sc over 1st 2 sts, 1 sc in each st to end. Turn. (13 sts)
Row 4: 1 ch, work a joined sc over 1st 2 sts, 1 sc in each st to end. Turn. (12 sts)
Row 5: 1 ch, work 2 sc in 1st st, 1 sc in each st to last 2 sts, a joined sc over last 2 sts. Turn. (12 sts)
Row 6: 1 ch, work 1 sc in each st to end. Turn. (12 sts)
Row 7: 1 ch, work 2 sc in 1st st, 1 sc in each st to last 2 sts, a joined sc over last 2 sts. Turn. (12 sts)
Row 8: 1 ch, work a joined sc over 1st 2 sts, 1 sc in each st to last st, 2 sc in last st. 5 ch. (12 sts + 5 ch)
Row 9: Miss 1st ch, work 2 sc in each of next 3 ch, 1 sc in last ch, 1 sc in each st to last 3 sts, a joined sc over last 3 sts. Turn. (16 sts)
Row 10: 1 ch, work a joined sc over 1st 3 sts, 1 sc in each of next 8 sts. 6 ch. (9 sts + 6 ch)
Row 11: Miss 1st ch, work 2 sc in each of next 3 ch, 1 sc in each of last 2 ch, 1 sc in each st to last 3 sts, a joined sc over last 3 sts. Turn. (14 sts)
Row 12: 1 ch, work 1 sc in each of 1st 7 sts. 7 ch. (7 sts + 7 ch)
Row 13: Miss 1st ch, work 2 sc in each of next 3 ch, 1 sc in each remaining ch and next st, 9 ch, miss 1st ch and work 2 sc in each of next 4 ch, 1 sc in each remaining ch and in next st, 11 ch, miss 1st ch and work 2 sc in each of next 5 ch, 1 sc in each remaining ch and in next st, 13 ch, miss 1st ch and work 2 sc in each of next 5 ch, 1 sc in each remaining ch and in next st. Don’t turn or fasten off.
Neatening Row
Work 1 sc in each st around to beginning of strands of hair. Fasten off.
Flower
Using (106) Snow White make a magic loop.
Into circle work (3 ch, a joined tr, 3 ch, sl st in circle) 5 times. Pull circle tight and fasten off.
Body
Using (130) Old Lace work 6 ch.
Row 1: Miss 1st st and work 1 sc in each st to end. Turn. (5 sts)
Rows 2-8: 1 ch, work 1 sc in each st to end. Turn. (5 sts)
Row 9: 1 ch, work a joined sc over 1st 2 sts, 1 sc in next st, a joined sc over last 2 sts. Turn. (3 sts)
Row 10: 1 ch, work 1 sc in each st. Turn. (3 sts)
Row 11: 1 ch, work a joined sc over the 3 sts. Turn. (1 st)
Rows 12-13: 1 ch, work 1 sc in st. Turn
Row 14: 1 ch, work 1 sc in st. Fasten off.
1st Arm
Join (130) Old Lace to top of row 10 and work 12 ch.
Miss 1st ch and work 1 sc in each remaining ch. Sl st into body and fasten off.
2nd Arm
Join (130) Old Lace across from top of 1st arm and work 12 ch.
Miss 1st ch and work 1 sc in each remaining ch. Sl st into body. Don’t fasten off.
Neatening Row
Work 1 sc in each st around lower body, 1 sl st in each st up to end of arm, 2 ch, work a joined hdc at end of arm, 2 ch, sl st in end of arm, 1 sl st in each st down arm around top of body and up other arm. Into end of arm work 2 ch, a joined hdc, 2 ch, sl st in end of arm and 1 sl st in each st down to body. Fasten off.
Bra (Make 2 pieces)
Using (400) Petrol Blue make a magic loop.
Into circle work (5 ch, sl st in circle) 3 times. Pull circle tight and fasten off.
Tail
Using (400) Petrol Blue work 10 ch.
Row 1: Miss 1st ch and work 1 sc in each remaining ch. Turn. (9 sts)
Row 2: 1 ch, work 1 sc in each st to end. Turn. (9 sts)
Row 3: 1 ch, work 2 sc in 1st st, 1 sc in each st to last 2 sts, a joined sc over last 2 sts. Turn. (9 sts)
Row 4: 1 ch, work 1 sc in each st to end. Turn. (9 sts)
Row 5: 1 ch, work 2 sc in 1st st, 1 sc in each st to last 2 sts, a joined sc over last 2 sts. Turn. (9 sts)
Row 6: 1 ch, work 1 sc in each st to end. Turn. (9 sts)
Row 7: 1 ch, work 2 sc in 1st st, 1 sc in each st to last 2 sts, a joined sc over last 2 sts. Turn. (9 sts)
Row 8: 1 ch, work a joined sc over 1st 2 sts, 1 sc in each st to last st, 2 sc in last st. 10 ch. (9 sts + 10 ch)
Row 9: Miss 1st ch, work 1 sc in each st to last 2 sts, a joined sc over last 2 sts. Turn. (17 sts)
Row 10: 1 ch, work a joined sc over 1st 2 sts, 1 sc in each st to last 2 sts, a joined sc over last 2 sts. Turn. (15 sts)
Row 11: 1 ch, work a joined sc over 1st 2 sts, 1 sc in next st, 1 hdc in each of following 3 sts, 1 dc in each of next 3 sts, 1 hdc in each of following 3 sts, 1 sc in next st, a joined sc over last 2 sts. Fasten off.
Tip of Tail
Using (400) Petrol Blue make a magic loop.
Row 1: 1 ch, work 1 sc in circle. Pull circle tight. Turn.
Row 2: 1 ch, work 3 sc in st. Turn.
Row 3: 1 ch, work 2 sc in 1st st, 1 sc in next st, 2 sc in last st. Turn. (5 sts)
Row 4: 1 ch, work a joined sc over 1st 2 sts, 1 sc in next st, a joined sc over last 2 sts. Turn. (3 sts)
Row 5: 1 ch, work a joined sc over the 3 sts. Turn.
Row 6: 1 ch, work 1 sc in st.
Sl st into end of tail, sl st into next st.
2nd Part of Tip of Tail
Row 1: 1 ch, work 1 sc in same st. Turn.
Row 2: 1 ch, work 3 sc in st. Turn.
Row 3: 1 ch, work 2 sc in 1st st, 1 sc in next st, 2 sc in last st. Turn. (5 sts)
Row 4: 1 ch, work a joined sc over 1st 2 sts, 1 sc in next st, a joined sc over last 2 sts. Turn. (3 sts)
Row 5: 1 ch, work a joined sc over the 3 sts. Turn.
Row 6: 1 ch, work 1 sc in st. Don’t fasten off.
Neatening Row
Tail can face either way. Turn if desired.
Work 1 sl st in each st around tip of tail, 1 sc in each st up the side. Along top work 1 sc, 2 ch in each st, 1 sc in each st down the side to tip of tail, 1 sl st in each st on remaining part of tip of tail. Fasten off.
To Make Up
Weave in ends. Embroider eyes to the head or attach beads for the eyes.
Embroider on a mouth.
Stitch the tail to the body.
Sew the 2 bra pieces to the body.
Attach the head to the body.
Stitch the head to the back of hair where shown.
Sew the front of hair over the top of the head.
Attach the flower to the hair with a bead.
And there’s the finished mermaid applique. I’ve also made it in different sizes and colors.
