Welcome to my crochet kookaburra pattern. This pattern was another request. This is what the finished kookaburra applique will look like.

Crochet Kookaburra Pattern
Abbreviations
- st – stitch
- sts – stitches
- ch – chain
- sl st – slip stitch
- dc – double crochet
- htr – half treble crochet
- tr – treble crochet
- dtr – double treble crochet
Materials Used
- Any thickness crochet cotton or yarn, I used Scheepjes Maxi Sweet Treat 2 ply crochet cotton colours (106) Snow White, (162) Black Coffee, (130) Old Lace, (404) English Tea, (254) Moon Rock and (173) Bluebell.
- A crochet hook, I used a 1mm hook.
- A darning needle to weave in ends.
- Thread and needle to stitch the kookaburra together.
- Blue, brown and white thread to embroider on markings.
- A bead for the eye.
- Scissors.

Size
Large kookaburra (Using 8 ply yarn & a 3mm hook)
15cm wide x 16cm high or 6” wide x 6.25” high
Medium kookaburra (Using 4 ply crochet cotton & a 1.5mm hook)
10.5cm wide x 11cm high or 4” wide x 4.25” high
Small kookaburra (Using 2 ply crochet cotton & a 1mm hook)
6cm wide x 7.5cm high or 2.25” wide x 3” high
Head & Body
Using (106) Snow White work 6 ch.
Row 1: Work 1 dc in 2nd ch from hook, 1 htr in next ch, 1 tr in following ch, 1 htr in next ch, 1 dc in last ch. Turn. (5 sts)
Row 2: 1 ch, work 2 dc in 1st st, 1 dc in each of next 3 sts, 2 dc in last st. Turn. (7 sts)
Row 3: 1 ch, work 2 dc in 1st st, 1 dc in each of next 5 sts, 2 dc in last st. Turn. (9 sts)
Row 4: 1 ch, work 2 dc in 1st st, 1 dc each st to end. Turn. (10 sts)
Row 5: 1 ch, work a joined dc over 1st 2 sts, 1 dc in each st to end. Turn. (9 sts)
Row 6: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each of 1st 7 sts, a joined dc over last 2 sts. Turn. (8 sts)
Row 7: 1 ch, work 2 dc in 1st st, 1 dc in each of next 6 sts, 2 dc in last st. Turn. (10 sts)
Row 8: 1 ch, work 2 dc in 1st st, 1 dc in each of next 8 sts, 2 dc in last st. Turn. (12 sts)
Row 9: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each of 1st 11 sts, 2 dc in last st. Turn. (13 sts)
Row 10: 1 ch, work 2 dc in 1st st, 1 dc in each of next 10 sts, a joined dc over last 2 sts. Turn. (13 sts)
Row 11: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each st. Turn. (13 sts)
Row 12: 1 ch, work 2 dc in 1st st, 1 dc in each of next 10 sts, a joined dc over last 2 sts. Turn. (13 sts)
Row 13: 1 ch, work a joined dc over 1st 2 sts, 1 dc in each st to end. Turn. (12 sts)
Row 14: 1 ch, work 2 dc in 1st st, 1 dc in each of next 9 sts, a joined dc over last 2 sts. Turn. (12 sts)
Row 15: 1 ch, work a joined dc over 1st 2 sts, 1 dc in each st to end. Turn. (11 sts)
Row 16: 1 ch, work 2 dc in 1st st, 1 dc in each of next 8 sts, a joined dc over last 2 sts. Turn. (11 sts)
Row 17: 1 ch, work a joined dc over 1st 2 sts, 1 dc in each st to end. Don’t turn or fasten off.

Neatening Row
1 ch, work 1 sl st in each st to bottom of head (1 ch, sl st in next 2 sts) 3 times, 1 sl st in each st around head to neck, (1 ch, sl st in next 2 sts) to bottom, work 1 sl st with either 2 or 3 ch between each sl st in each st to 5th st back from end of the bottom, leave last 4 sts. Fasten off.

Tail
Join (130) Old Lace to same st as last st along bottom where shown.

6 ch.
Work 1 sl st in 2nd ch from hook, 1 dc in next ch, 1 htr in each remaining ch. Miss 1 st, sl st in next st of body. Fasten off.

Join (162) Black Coffee to same st along bottom of body.
Row 1: 12 ch, miss 1st ch, work 1 dc in each remaining ch, sl st in next st along bottom of body.
Row 2: 12 ch, miss 1st ch, work 1 dc in each remaining ch, sl st in last st along bottom of body. Fasten off.

Wing
Using (162) Black Coffee make a magic loop.
Row 1: 1 ch, work 1 dc in circle. Pull circle tight. Turn. (1 st)
Row 2: 1 ch, work 2 dc in st. Turn. (2 sts)
Row 3: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each st. Turn. (2 sts)
Row 4: 1 ch, work 2 dc in 1st st, 1 dc in last st. Turn. (3 sts)
Row 5: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each st. Turn. (3 sts)
Row 6: 2 ch, work 2 htr in 1st st, 1 dc in each of last 2 sts. Turn. (4 sts)
Row 7: 1 ch, work 1 dc in 1st st, 1 htr in next st, 1 tr in following st, 1 dtr in last st. Don’t turn or fasten off.

Neatening Row
1 ch, work 11 sl sts down 1st side, 1 sl st in each st on straight edges, 1 sl st, 1 ch and 1 sl st in corner sts. Join with a sl st in 1st st. Don’t turn or fasten off.

Side of Wing
Row 1: Sl st into 1st st, working into back loop only work 1 ch, 1 dc in same st as sl st, 1 dc in each of next 6 sts, sl st in each of following 2 sts. Turn.
Row 2: Working into front loop only work 1 dc in each of next 7 sts, sl st in next st. Turn.
Row 3: Working into back loop only work 1 dc in each of next 7 sts, 2 htr in following st, 1 htr in next st, 1 dc in tip of wing. Turn.
Row 4: 2 ch, work 2 htr in each of 1st 2 sts, 1 tr in next st.
Row 5: 6 ch, sl st in 2nd ch from hook, 1 dc in next ch, 1 htr in following ch, a joined tr over last 2 ch, sl st in last st of row 4, sl st to the point where wing began. Fasten off.

Wing Markings (Make 3)
Join (173) Bluebell to 1st back loop left.

(2 ch, sl st in next back loop) across all back loops of row. Fasten off.

Repeat for other 2 rows of loops.

Beak Piece
Using (254) Moon Rock work 5 ch.
Row 1: Work 1 sl st in 2nd ch from hook, 1 dc in each of next 2 ch, 2 htr in last ch. Fasten off.

Join (404) English Tea to back loop only of 1st st at bottom of beak.

Row 2: 1 ch, working into back loop only work 1 dc in next st, 1 htr in each of following 3 sts. Fasten off.

Join (162) Black Coffee to ch at end of Moon Rock.

Work 1 sl st in each st of front loop left from row 1. 3 ch. Fasten off leaving a long tail.

Join (404) English Tea to 1st Moon Rock st at end of beak where shown.

(6 ch, miss 1st ch, work 1 sl st in each remaining ch, sl st in same st as join) 2 times, sl st in next st, (5 ch, miss 1st ch, work 1 sl st in each remaining ch, sl st in same st) 2 times. Fasten off.

Eye Area
Using (162) Black Coffee make a magic loop.
Row 1: 2 ch, work 1 htr in circle. Pull circle tight. Turn.
Row 2: 2 ch, work 1 htr in st. Turn.
Row 3: 2 ch, work 1 htr in top of ch, 1 ch, sl st in top of htr, 1 htr in st, 1 ch, work 1 sl st in top of htr. Fasten off.

Claw
Using (404) English Tea work 3 ch,
Miss 1st ch, work 1 sl st in each remaining ch, 3 ch, miss 1st ch, work 1 st st in each remaining ch. sl st in 1st side, 3 ch. Fasten off leaving a long tail to attach claw to the body.

To Make Up
Weave in ends. Stitch tail pieces together.

Embroider markings on tail and wing.

Attach beak part to head.

Stitch eye area to head.

Using the tail left from beak piece embroider marking across to eye area.

Attach a bead to centre of eye area.

Add a white dot in centre of bead.

Sew the wing to body.

Attach the claw to the body.
