Welcome to my crochet fish pattern. This pattern was another request. This is what the finished fish applique will look like.

Crochet Fish Pattern
Abbreviations
- st – stitch
- sts – stitches
- ch – chain
- sl st – slip stitch
- dc – double crochet
- htr – half treble crochet
- tr – treble crochet
- dtr – double treble crochet
Materials Used
- Any thickness crochet cotton or yarn, I used Scheepjes Maxi Sweet Treat 2 ply crochet cotton colours (201) Electric Blue, (173) Bluebell, (208) Yellow Gold, (106) Snow White, (110) Black and (403) Lemonade.
- A crochet hook, I used a 1mm hook.
- A darning needle to weave in ends.
- Scissors.

Size
Large fish (Using 8 ply yarn & a 3mm hook)
12cm wide x 10.5cm high or 4.75” wide x 4” high
Medium fish (Using 4 ply crochet cotton & a 1.5mm hook)
10cm wide x 8.5cm high or 4” wide x 3.5” high
Small fish (Using 2 ply crochet cotton & a 1mm hook)
7cm wide x 6.5cm high or 2.75” wide x 2” high
Nose
Using (173) Bluebell make a magic loop.
Row 1: 3 ch, work 3 tr in circle. Pull circle tight. (3 sts)

Join in (110) Black and fasten off the Bluebell leaving a tail to neaten nose.

Row 2: 5 ch, work 1 sl st in 2nd ch from hook, 1 htr in each remaining ch and 1st 2 sts, 3 htr in last st. (9 sts)

Join in (173) Bluebell and fasten off the Black
Row 3: 1 ch, work 3 dc in 1st st, 1 htr in next st, 1 dtr in each of following 2 sts, 1 sl st in next st. Fasten off.

Join (201) Electric Blue to 1st st of row 3 at bottom of fish. I left a long tail at beginning to use for the neatening row.

Row 4: 1 ch, work 2 dc in 1st st, 1 dc in each of next 5 sts, 1 htr in each of following 3 sts, 1 dc in each of next 2 sts, 2 dc and 1 htr in end of chain. Turn. (15 sts)

Row 5: 1 ch, work 2 dc in 1st st, 1 dc in each st to last st, 2 dc in last st. Turn. (17 sts)
Row 6: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each st. Turn. (17 sts)
Row 7: 1 ch, work 2 dc in 1st st, 1 dc in each st to last st, 2 dc in last st. Turn. (19 sts)
Rows 8-9: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each st. Turn. (19 sts)
Row 10: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each of 1st 16 sts, a joined dc over next 2 sts. Turn. (17 sts)
Row 11: 1 ch, work a joined dc over 1st 3 sts, 1 dc in each st to last st, 2 dc in last st. Turn. (16 sts)
Row 12: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each of 1st 13 sts, a joined dc over last 3 sts. Turn. (14 sts)
Row 13: 1 ch, work a joined dc over 1st 3 sts, 1 dc in each st to last st, 2 dc in last st. Turn. (13 sts)
Row 14: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each of 1st 11 sts, a joined dc over last 2 sts. Turn. (12 sts)
Row 15: 1 ch, work a joined dc over 1st 2 sts, 1 dc in each st to end. Turn. (11 sts)
Row 16: 1 ch, work a joined dc over 1st 2 sts, 1 htr in each of next 2 sts, 1 tr in each of following 3 sts, 1 htr in each of next 2 sts, a joined dc over last 2 sts. Fasten off.

Neatening Row
You will need to work some extra stitches in the end of the fish on the neatening row, the row of Yellow Gold and the row of Black to have enough stitches for the top fin. You will need about 2 extra stitches in each row.
Starting with the (201) Electric Blue and using the colours of the piece work 1 sl st in each st to end of fish, 1 or 2 dc in each st along end of fish and 1 sl st in each st to beginning of row. Fasten off.

Join (208) Yellow Gold to 2nd st along end where shown.

Work 1 dc in each of next 3 sts, 1 or 2 htr in each st along to end. Work 2 sl st along the side of the last htr. Sl st in neatening row. Fasten off.

Join (110) Black to 1st st along end.

Work 1 dc in each of next 5 sts, 1 htr in each of following 2 sts, 2 tr in next st, 1 tr in each of following 2 sts, 1 or 2 dtr in each st to end. Work 3 sl st along the side of the last dtr. Sl st in neatening row. Fasten off.

Bottom Fin
Join (403) Lemonade to 1st black st on back bottom where shown.

Row 1: 1 ch, work 2 dc in next st, 1 dc in each of following 2 sts, a joined dc over next 2 sts. Turn.
Row 2: 1 ch, work a joined dc over 1st 2 sts, 1 dc in next st, a joined htr over following 2 sts. Turn.
Row 3: 2 ch, work 1 htr in 1st st, 1 tr in next st, 1 htr in last st. Fasten off.

Neatening Row
Join (403) Lemonade 4 sts before the fin.

Work 1 sl st in each st up and around fin. Fasten off.

Tail Bottom
Join (403) Lemonade to 3rd st after fin.

2 ch, work 1 htr in same st as join, 2 htr in next st and 1 htr in following st. Fasten off.

Top of Tail
Join (208) Yellow Gold to 1st st of tail bottom.

Row 1: 2 ch, work 2 htr in 1st st, 1 htr in each of next 2 sts, 2 htr in last st. Turn. (6 sts)
Row 2: 2 ch, work 2 htr in 1st st, 1 htr in next st, 1 tr in each of following 2 sts, 1 htr in next st, 2 htr in last st. Turn. (8 sts)
Row 3: 2 ch, work 2 htr in 1st st, 1 htr in next st, 1 tr in each of following 4 sts, 1 htr in next st, 2 htr in last st. Fasten off.

Top Fin
Join (208) Yellow Gold to 2nd st after tail bottom. I left a long tail at beginning for the neatening row.
Row 1: 1 ch, work a joined dc over next 2 sts, 1 dc in each remaining st along black row. Turn.
Row 2: 1 ch, work a joined dc over 1st 2 sts, 1 dc in each st to last 2 sts, a joined dc over last 2 sts. Turn.
Row 3: 1 ch, work a joined dc over 1st 2 sts, 1 dc in each st to last 3 sts, a joined dc over last 3 sts. Turn.
Row 4: 2 ch, work a joined htr over 1st 2 sts, 1 htr in next st, 1 tr in each remaining st. Fasten off.

Neatening Row
Using the cotton left at beginning of fin work 1 sl st in each st around fin. Fasten off.

Eye
Using (106) Snow White make a magic loop.
1 ch, work 7 dc in circle. Pull circle tight and join with a sl st in top of 1st st. Fasten off.

To Make Up
Weave in ends. Embroider on centre of eye.

Attach eye to head.

Embroider black markings to body.

And there’s the finished fish applique. I’ve also made it in different sizes and colours.
