Spider Crochet Pattern

Abbreviations

  • st – stitch
  • sts – stitches
  • ch – chain
  • sl st – slip stitch
  • dc – double crochet
  • htr – half treble crochet
  • tr – treble crochet
  • dtr – double treble crochet

Materials Used

  • I used grey, white and black 8 ply wool which is light worsted in the US and double knit in the UK.
  • A crochet hook, I used a 2.5mm hook.
  • Scissors.
  • A sewing needle and thread to stitch the spider together.
  • Darning needle to weave in ends.
  • A small amount of embroidery or sewing cotton to embroider a dot on the eyes and embroider on a mouth.

Size

Large spider (Using 8 ply wool)

11cm x 11cm or 4” x 4”

Small spider (Using 4 ply crochet cotton)

6cm x 6cm or 2.5” x 2.5”

Body

Make a magic loop.

Row 1: Into circle work 1 ch, 3 htr, 3 dtr, 6 htr, 3 dtr and 3 htr.  Pull circle tight and join with a sl st in top of 1st htr.

Row 2:  1 ch, 1 htr in same st as ch, 1 htr in next st, 2 htr in following st, 2 dtr in each of next 3 sts, 2 htr in following st, 1 htr in each of next 4 sts, 2 htr in following st, 2 dtr in each of next 3 sts, 2 htr in following st, 1 htr in each remaining st.  Sl st in top of 1st st.

Row 3:  2 ch, 1 tr in same st as ch,1 tr in each of next 4 sts, 2 tr in each of following 5 sts, 1 tr in each of next 8 sts, 2 tr in each of following 5 sts, 1 tr in each st to end.  Join with a sl st in top of 1st st.  Fasten off.

Head

Make a magic loop.

Row 1: Into circle work 1 ch, 3 htr, 3 dtr, 6 htr, 3 dtr and 3 htr.  Pull circle tight and join with a sl st in top of 1st htr.

Row 2:  2 ch, 1 tr in same st as ch, (1 tr in next st, 2 tr in following st) repeat to end of row.  Sl st in top of 1st st.  Fasten off.

Outer Eyes (Make 2)

Using white make a magic loop.

1 ch, 7 htr in circle, pull circle tight and sl st in 1st st.  Fasten off.

Inner Eyes (Make 2)

Using black make a magic loop.

1 ch, 3 dc in circle, pull circle tight and sl st in 1st st.  Fasten off.

To Make Up Head

Weave in ends.  Embroider a white dot on each inner eye.

Attach the inner eyes to the outer eyes.

Stitch the eyes to the head.

Embroider a mouth on the head.

Crochet legs on the front of the head 4 sts either side of the centre st as pattern below.

Stitch the head to the body.

Crochet on remaining legs evenly along sides and weave in ends.

Spider’s Right Legs

13 ch.

Work 2 dc in 2nd ch from hook, 1 sl st in each of next 5 sts, a joined dc over following 2 sts, 1 sl st in each st to end.  Sl st into body and fasten off.

Spider’s Left Legs

12 ch.

Work 2 dc in 2nd ch from hook, 1 sl st in each of next 5 sts, 3 dc in following st, 1 sl st in each st to end.  Sl st into body and fasten off.
