Welcome to my small shark crochet applique pattern. This follows on from the larger shark crochet applique pattern with accessories, from last week. This is what the small shark will look like.

Small Shark Crochet Pattern

Abbreviations

  • st – stitch
  • sts – stitches
  • ch – chain
  • sl st – slip stitch
  • sc – single crochet
  • hdc – half double crochet
  • dc – double crochet
  • tr – treble crochet

Materials Used

  • I used grey and white 4 ply crochet cotton.
  • A crochet hook, I used a 1.25mm hook.
  • Scissors.
  • Darning needle to weave in ends.
  • Sewing thread and a sewing needle to stitch the shark together.
  • If making a finger puppet you will need some felt for the back.

Size 

Large shark (Using 8 ply wool)

11.5cm x 9cm or 4.5” x 3.5”

Medium shark (Using 4 ply crochet cotton)

7.5cm x 6cm or 3” x 2.25”

Head

Using grey make a magic loop.

Row 1:  2 ch, work 2 hdc in circle.  Pull circle tight but don’t join.  Turn.

Row 2:  2 ch, 2 hdc in 1st st, 1 hdc in next st and 1 hdc in top of the 2 ch.  Turn.  (4 sts)

Row 3:  3 ch, 2 dc in 1st st, 1 hdc in each st, 1 hdc in top of ch.  Turn.  (6 sts)

Row 4:  2 ch, a joined hdc over 1st 2 sts, 1 hdc in each of next 2 sts, 1 dc in each of last 2 sts.  Turn.  (5 sts)

Row 5:  3 ch, 1 hdc in 1st st, 1 sc in each st to end.  Don’t fasten off.

Neatening Row

1 ch, work a sl st in each st around.  Sl st into 1st st.  Fasten off.

Body

Using grey make a magic loop.

Row 1:  2 ch, work 6 hdc in circle.  Pull circle tight but don’t join.  Turn.

Row 2:  2 ch, 2 hdc in 1st st, 1 hdc in each st and 1 hdc in top of the 2 ch.  Turn.  (8 sts)

Row 3:  2 ch, 2 hdc in 1st st, 1 hdc in each st, 1 hdc in top of ch.  Turn.  (10 sts)

Row 4:  2 ch, 2 hdc in 1st st, 1 hdc in each st, 1 hdc in top of ch.  Turn.  (12 sts)

Row 5:  2 ch, 1 hdc in each st to last 3 sts, 1 dc in each of last 3 sts.  Turn.  (12 sts)

Rows 6-9:  2 ch, 1 hdc in each st to last 2 sts, a joined hdc over last 2 sts.  Turn.  (8 sts after row 9)

Rows 10-11:  2 ch, a joined hdc over 1st 2 sts, 1 hdc in each st to last 2 sts, a joined hdc over last 2 sts.  Turn.  (4 sts after row 11)

Row 12:  2 ch, a joined hdc over 1st 2 sts, a joined sc over last 2 sts.  Turn.  (2 sts)

Row 13:  2 ch, 3 hdc in each st.  Turn.  (6 sts)

Row 14:  3 ch, 2 dc in 1st st, 1 dc in next st, 1 hdc and 1 sc in following st, 1 sc and 1 hdc in next st, 1 dc in following st, 2 dc in last st.  Turn.  (10 sts)

Row 15:  3 ch, a dc cluster over 1st 3 sts.  Fasten off.

Join cotton in the 4th last st on other side of tail.

3 ch, work a dc cluster over the next 3 sts.  Don’t fasten off.

Neatening Row

Sl st in each st down tail, 1 or 2 sc in each st around the body to the tail, sl st in each st up to the 1st st at end of tail.

Into the end of the tail work 2 ch and a joined hdc and fasten off.

Join cotton at 1st st at end of next tail section and work 2 ch and a joined hdc in top of tail.  Fasten off.

Top Fin

Join cotton 6 sts forward of tail.

4 ch, 1 tr in same st as ch, 2 dc in following st, 1 hdc in next st, 1 sc in next st, sl st in following st.  Fasten off.

Teeth

10 ch.

1st tooth

Miss 2 ch, a joined dc over next 2 sts.  Fasten off.

2nd tooth

Join cotton in same st as last part of joined dc.

2 ch, a joined hdc over next 2 sts.  Fasten off.

3rd Tooth

Join cotton in same st as last part of joined hdc.

2 ch, a joined hdc over next 2 sts.  Fasten off.

4th Tooth

Join cotton in same st as last part of joined hdc.

2 ch, a joined hdc over next 2 sts.  Fasten off.

Large Bottom Fin

Make a magic loop.

Row 1:  2 ch, work 1 hdc in circle.  Pull circle tight but don’t join.  Turn.

Row 2:  2 ch, 2 hdc in st, 2 hdc in top of ch.  Turn.

Row 3:  2 ch, 2 hdc in 1st st, 2 dc in next st, 2 tr in following st and 1 tr in last st.  Fasten off.

Eyes (Make 2)

Using white make a magic loop.

1 ch, into circle work 8 sc.  Pull circle tight and join with a sl st in top of 1st st.  Fasten off.

To Make Up

Weave in ends.  Embroider a black dot on each eye.

Stitch the teeth in behind the head.

Sew the head to the body.

Crochet the small bottom fin on the bottom of the shark as pattern below.

Attach the large bottom fin to the shark.

If making a finger puppet stitch the felt to the back leaving a gap for your finger between the 2 bottom fins.

Stitch the eyes to the shark.

Small Bottom Fin

Join cotton at bottom of body under 2nd last tooth.

4 ch, work a cluster of 1 dc in same st as ch, 1 hdc in next st and 1 dc in following st.  Fasten off.
