Welcome to my small crochet kangaroo pattern. This pattern was another request. This is what the finished kangaroo applique will look like.

Small Crochet Kangaroo Applique Pattern
Abbreviations
- st – stitch
- sts – stitches
- ch – chain
- sl st – slip stitch
- dc – double crochet
- htr – half treble crochet
- tr – treble crochet
Materials Used
- Any thickness crochet cotton or yarn, I used Scheepjes Maxi Sweet Treat 2 ply crochet cotton colours (242) Metal Grey and (074) Mercury.
- A crochet hook, I used a 1mm hook.
- A darning needle to weave in ends.
- Scissors.
- Black thread and needle to embroider on the eye and nose.
Size
Large kangaroo (Using 8 ply yarn & a 3mm hook)
9cm wide x 8cm high or 3.5” wide x 3” high
Medium kangaroo (Using 4 ply crochet cotton & a 1.5mm hook)
6cm wide x 5.5cm high or 2.5” wide x 2.25” high
Small kangaroo (Using 2 ply crochet cotton & a 1mm hook)
4.5cm wide x 4cm high or 1.75” wide x 1.5” high
Body & Head
Using (242) Metal Grey work 6 ch.
Row 1: Work 1 dc in 2nd ch from hook, 1 htr in next ch, 1 tr in following ch, 1 htr in next ch, 1 dc in last ch. Turn. (5 sts)
Row 2: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each st to last st, 1 dc and 1 htr in last st. Turn. (6 sts)
Row 3: 1 ch, work 2 dc in 1st st, 1 dc in each st to end. Turn. (7 sts)
Row 4: 1 ch, work a joined dc over 1st 2 sts, 1 dc in each st to end. Turn. (6 sts)
Row 5: 1 ch, work 1 dc in 1st st, a joined dc, htr and tr over next 3 sts. Turn. (2 sts)
Rows 6-7: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each st. Turn. (2 sts)
Row 8: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each st. 3 ch. (2 sts + 3 ch)
Row 9: Work 1 sl st in 2nd ch from hook, 1 dc in last ch, 1 dc in each of next 2 sts. Turn.
Row 10: 1 ch, work a joined dc over 1st 2 sts. Don’t turn or fasten off.
Neatening Row, Arm, Front Leg, Tail & Ear
Work 1 sl st in each st to about 4 sts down from the neck, work 5 ch for arm, miss 1st ch, work 1 sl st in each remaining ch, 1 sl st in each st to 1st st at the bottom of the body, 1 ch, 1 dc in same st as ch, turn, 1 ch, 1 dc in top of last dc, work 5 ch for leg, miss 1st ch, 1 sl st in each remaining ch and top of last dc, 1 sl st in each st down the side of the dcs and into about next 3 sts on body, work 14 ch for tail, miss 1st ch. 1 sl st in each of next 3 ch, 1 dc in following ch, 1 htr in next ch, (a joined htr over following 2 ch) 2 times, 1 htr in next ch, 2 htr in each remaining ch, sl st in body, 1 sl st in each st to top of the head, 2 ch, sl st on 2nd ch from hook, sl st in top of the head. Fasten off.
Back Leg
Join (242) Metal Grey to stitch before the front leg on the wrong side.
Row 1: 1 ch, work 1 dc in same st as join, 5 ch.
Row 2: Miss 1st ch, work 1 sl st in each remaining ch, sl st in top of dc, sl st in the side of the dc and in the body. Fasten off.
Front Ear
Using (074) Mercury work 2 ch.
Work 1 sl st in 2nd ch from hook. Fasten off.
Join (242) Metal Grey to the top of the ear.
1 ch, work 1 sl st in side of the ear and 1 sl st in bottom of the ear. Fasten off. I left a longer tail to attach the ear to the head.
To Make Up
Weave in ends. Stitch the back leg in behind the front leg.
Embroider on a nose and eye.
Stitch the ear just under 1st ear.
And there’s the finished small kangaroo. I’ve also made it in different sizes and colours.
