Welcome to my giraffe crochet pattern. This is what the finished giraffe will look like.

Giraffe Crochet Pattern
Abbreviations
- st – stitch
- sts – stitches
- ch – chain
- sl st – slip stitch
- sc – single crochet
- hdc – half double crochet
- dc – double crochet
- tr – treble crochet
Materials Used
- I used yellow, brown and black 4 ply crochet cotton.
- A crochet hook, I used a 1.25mm hook.
- A sewing needle.
- Sewing thread to stitch the giraffe together.
- Scissors.
- A darning needle to weave in the ends.
- Black and white sewing or embroidery cotton for the dot on the eyes and the mouth.
Size
Large giraffe (Using 8 ply wool)
20cm x 9cm or 8” x 3.5”
Medium giraffe (Using 4 ply crochet cotton)
13cm x 6cm or 5” x 2.5”
Muzzle
Using contrast colour make a magic loop.
Row 1: 2 ch, 3 dc, 3 tr, 6 dc, 3 tr, 3 dc, pull circle tight and join with a sl st in top of 1st st.
Row 2: 1 ch, 1 sc in same place as ch, 1 sc in next st, 1 sc and 1 hdc in following st, 1 hdc in next st, 2 hdc in following st, 1 hdc in next st, 1 hdc and 1 sc in following st, 1 sc in each of next 4 sts, 1 sc and 1 hdc in following st, 1 hdc in next st, 2 hdc in following st, 1 hdc in next st, 1 hdc and sc in following st, 1 sc in each st to end. Join with sl st in top of 1st st. Fasten off.
Top of Head
Join main colour to between hdc and sc as shown.
Row 1: 1 ch, 1 sc in same st as ch, 1 sc in each of next 6 sts. Turn.
Row 2: 3 ch, a joined dc over 1st 2 sts, 1 dc in each st to last 2 sts, a joined dc over last 2 sts. Turn.
Row 3: 3 ch, a dc cluster over 1st 3 sts, a dc cluster over same st as last st of dc cluster and last 2 sts. Fasten off.
Horns (Make 2)
Using contrast colour work 7 ch, work 1 sc in 3rd ch from hook, sl st in each ch to end. Fasten off leaving a longer tail to attach it to the giraffe’s head.
Ears (Make 2)
Join main colour cotton to side of head about 2 sts down from top of head.
4 ch, work a joined tr in same place as ch. Fasten off.
Eyes (Make 2)
Using black make a magic loop.
1 ch, work 2 sl st into circle. Pull circle tight and join with a sl st in ch. Fasten off.
Neck
Join main colour cotton to muzzle about 1 st from the centre bottom.
Row 1: 1 ch, 1 sc in same st as ch, 1 sc in next st. Turn.
Rows 2-5: 1 ch, 1 sc in each st. Turn.
Row 6: 1 ch, 2 sc in 1st st, 1 sc in last st. Turn.
Rows 7-12: 1 ch, 1 sc in each st. Turn.
Don’t fasten off, continue with the body.
Body
Row 13: 1 ch, 2 sc in 1st st, 1 sc in next st, 3 sc in last st. Turn.
Row 14: 1 ch, 2 sc in 1st st, 1 sc in each st to end. Turn.
Row 15: 1 ch, 2 sc in 1st st, 1 sc in each st to last st, 2 sc in last st. 6 ch.
Row 16: Work 2 sc in 2nd ch from hook, 1 sc in each remaining ch and 1 sc in each st to end. Turn.
Rows 17-19: 1 ch, 1 sc in each st to end. Turn.
Row 20: 1 ch, 1 sc in each st to last 2 sts, a joined sc over last 2 sts. Turn.
Row 21: 1 ch, a joined sc over 1st 2 sts, 1 sc in each st to end. Turn.
Row 22: 1 ch, 1 sc in each st to last 2 sts, a joined sc over last 2 sts. Fasten off.
Neatening Row and Tail
Join main colour to beginning of neck as shown.
Work 1 or 2 sc in each st around to st before back, 13 ch, miss 1st ch and work a sl st in each remaining ch, work 1 sc into next st on body, work 1 or 2 sc in each st up to head. Fasten off.
Tip of Tail
Using contrast colour join at end of tail.
3 ch, work a joined dc into same place as ch. Fasten off.
Back Left Leg
Using main colour make a magic loop.
Row 1: 3 ch, work 3 dc in circle. Pull circle tight. Turn.
Row 2: 3 ch, work 2 dc in 1st st and 1 dc in each st to end. Turn.
Row 3: 3 ch, work 1 dc in 1st st and a dc cluster over last 3 sts. Turn.
Rows 4-5: 3 ch, work 1 dc in each st. Turn.
Row 6: 3 ch, work 1 dc in each st. Don’t fasten off.
Neatening Row
Work a sl st in each st around sides and top and fasten off. You work a hoof on the end.
Other Legs (Make 3)
Using main colour work 5 ch.
Row 1: Work 2 dc in 4th ch from hook and 1 dc in 5th ch. Turn.
Row 2: 3 ch, work a joined dc over 1st 2 sts and 1 dc in last st. Turn.
Rows 3-4: 3 ch, work 1 dc in each st. Turn.
Row 5: 3 ch, work 1 dc in each st. Don’t fasten off.
Neatening Row
Work a sl st in each st around sides and top and fasten off. You work a hoof on the end.
Hooves
Join black cotton to end of leg.
3 ch, work 1 dc in each st along bottom of leg. Fasten off.
Spots
Make small random spots using contrast colour. I’ve been using about 10.
To Make Up
Weave in ends. Attach horns to top of head.
Embroider a white dot in the middle of each eye.
Sew the eyes to the head.
Embroider on a mouth.
Stitch the left legs to the front of the body.
Attach the right legs behind the body.
Sew the spots onto the giraffe as desired.
