We’re going to continue on the frog crochet basket series with the diving frog. It has a cute little smile and when finished will look like this.

If you haven’t done the earlier frog in the series the dancing frog crochet pattern is up for you to try. Both the frogs have similar faces but with different bodies.

Diving Frog Crochet Pattern US 

Abbreviations

  • st –  stitch
  • sts –  stitches
  • ch –  chain
  • sl st –  slip stitch
  • sc –  single crochet
  • hdc –  half double crochet
  • dc –  double crochet
  • tr –  treble crochet

Materials Used

  • Small amount of green and red or pink crochet cotton or wool.
  • Crochet hook.
  • Black sewing thread.
  • Needle.
  • For the eyes, I used fine white and black cotton. (Small felt circles could be used).

Head

Make a magic loop.
Row 1: 3 ch. Work 14 dc. into loop and pull tight. Sl st. into 3rd ch.
Row 2: 2 ch, 1 hdc in same place, 2 tr in next st, 1 hdc, 2 tr in next st, 2 hdc, 2 dc, 2 tr, 2 dc, 2 hdc, sc around to 4th last sts, 2 hdc, 2 dc, 2 tr, 2 dc, join with a sl st in 2nd ch.  Fasten off.

Face piece

Make a magic loop.
3 ch, joined dc, 3 ch sl st into loop, 1 sc, 3 ch, joined dc, 3 ch, sl st into loop, 1 s c, sl st into near bottom of ch.

Mouth

Using red or pink make a magic loop.
3 ch, work a 3 dc cluster into loop.  Fasten off.

Outer eyes (Make 2)

Using fine white cotton make a magic loop.
4 ch 4 tr cluster.  Fasten off.

Inner Eyes (Make 2)

Using fine black cotton make a magic loop.
3 ch, 8 dc in loop.  Join.  Fasten off.

Body

Make a magic loop.
Row 1:  3 ch. Work 14 dc. into loop and pull tight. Sl st. into 3rd ch.
Row 2:  3 ch. work 2 dc into each tr join with a sl st. Fasten off.

1st Leg

Join cotton to body.

22 ch, sc in 4th ch from hook, sl st into next st and sc in following st, 5 ch, sc into 4th ch from hook, sl st into next st.  sl st into the sc of previous toe, 5 ch, sc into 4th ch from hook, sl st into next st.  sl st into the sc of previous toe, 3 dc, sl st into same st as last dc. 3 sc, 2 hdc, 1 joined dc over next 4 sts, dc over remaining ch.

2nd Leg

Join cotton to body 2 stitches to the left of the 1st leg.

21 ch, sc in 4th ch from hook, sl st into next st and sc in following st, 5 ch, sc into 4th ch from hook, sl st into next st.  sl st into the sc of previous toe, 5 ch, sc into 4th ch from hook, sl st into next st.  sl st into the sc of previous toe, 3 dc, sl st into same st as last dc. 3 sc, 2 hdc, 5 dc in next st, dc over remaining ch.

Arms (Make 2)

Join cotton to body about 5 sts from the centre of where the head will go.

15 ch, sc in 4th ch from hook, sl st into next st and sc in following st, 5 ch, sc into 4th ch from hook, sl st into next st.  sl st into the sc of previous finger, 5 ch, sc into 4th ch from hook, sl st into next st. sl st into the sc of previous finger, sc over ch to body, sl st into body.  Fasten off.

To make up

Weave in endings.  Attach mouth to face, attach face piece slightly over mouth, with room at the top for eyes, attach outer eyes first and then inner eyes over the top as shown on photo.

Outline mouth with black cotton if desired.
