Welcome to my crochet zebra pattern. This was a request, but I’m also hoping to use it on a jungle animal blanket. This is what the finished zebra will look like.

Crochet Zebra Pattern 

Abbreviations

  • st – stitch
  • sts – stitches
  • ch – chain
  • sl st – slip stitch
  • dc – double crochet
  • htr – half treble crochet
  • tr – treble crochet
  • dtr – double treble crochet

Materials Used

  • White, black and pink crochet cotton or wool, I used 4 ply crochet cotton.
  • A crochet hook, I used a 1.5mm hook.
  • Scissors.
  • Darning needle to weave in ends.
  • Sewing needle and thread to stitch the zebra together.

Size

Large zebra (Using 8 ply wool)

13cm x 13cm or 5” x 5”

Medium zebra (Using 4 ply crochet cotton)

10cm x 9cm or 4” x 3.5”

Nose

Using black cotton make a magic loop.

Row 1:  1 ch, work 2 dc in circle, pull circle tight but don’t join.  Turn. (2 sts)

Row 2:  1 ch, work 2 dc in each st.  Turn.  (4 sts)

Change to white.

Row 3:  1 ch, work 1 dc in each st to end.  Turn. (4 sts)

Row 4:  1 ch, work 1 dc in each st to end.  Turn.  (4 sts)

Row 5:  1 ch, work 1 dc in each st to last st, work 2 dc in last st.  Turn.  (5 sts)

Row 6:  1 ch, work 1 dc in each st to end.  Turn.  (5 sts)

Row 7:  1 ch, work 1 dc in each st to last st, work 2 dc in last st.  Turn.  (6 sts)

Row 8:  1 ch, work a joined dc over 1st 2 sts, a joined dc over next 2 sts and a joined dc over last 2 sts.  Turn.  (3 sts)

Row 9:  1 ch, work a joined dc over the 3 sts.  Fasten off.

Neatening Row

Join white cotton to 1st st after nose.

Work 1 sl st in each st to 1 st after centre of head,  join in black and work 1 sl st in each st to 2 sts before nose, join white and work a sl st in next 2 sts,  join black and work a sl st in each st around nose.  Fasten off.

Body

Join white cotton to the back loop only of the 4th st up from the nose.

Row 1:  1 ch, working only in the back loop of each st work 1 dc in same st as ch, 1 dc in each of next 3 sts, a joined dc over same st as last dc and next st.  Turn.  (5 sts)

Row 2:  1 ch, work a joined dc over 1st 2 sts, 2 dc in next st, 1 htr in following st, 3 tr in last st.  Turn.  (7 sts)

Row 3:  2 ch, work 1 htr and 1 dc in same st as ch, 1 dc in each of next 4 sts, a joined dc over next 2 sts.  Turn. (7 sts)

Row 4:  1 ch, work a joined dc over 1st 2 sts, 1 dc in each st to last st, 1 htr and 1 tr in last st.  Turn.  (7 sts)

Row 5:  3 ch, work 2 tr in 1st st, 1 htr in next st, 1 dc in each st to end.  Turn.  (8 sts)

Row 6:  1 ch, work 1 dc in each st to last st, 1 htr and 1 tr in last st.  Turn.  (9 sts)

Row 7:  1 ch, work 1 dc in each st to end.  Turn.  (9 sts)

Row 8:  1 ch, work 1 dc in each of next 6 sts, 1 htr in each of following 3 sts.  Turn.  (9 sts)

Row 9:  2 ch, work a joined htr over 1st 2 sts, 1 htr in each of next 2 sts, 1 dc in each of following 3 sts, a joined dc over last 2 sts.  Turn.  (7 sts)

Row 10:  1 ch, work 2 dc in 1st st, 1 dc in each st to end.  Turn.  (8 sts)

Row 11:  2 ch, work 1 htr in each of 1st 4 sts, 1 dc in each st to end.  Turn.  (8 sts)

Row 12:  1 ch, work 1 dc in each st to last 2 sts, a joined dc over last 2 sts.  Turn.  (7 sts)

Row 13:  1 ch, work a joined dc over 1st 2 sts, 1 dc in each st to end.  Turn.  (6 sts)

Row 14:  1 ch, work 1 dc in each st to end.  Turn.  (6 sts)

Row 15:  1 ch, work 1 dc in each st to last 2 sts, a joined dc over last 2 sts.  Turn.  (5 sts)

Row 16:  1 ch, work 1 dc in each st to end.  Turn.  (5 sts)

Row 17:  1 ch, work 1 dc in each st to last 2 sts, a joined dc over last 2 sts.  Turn.  (4 sts)

Row 18:  1 ch, work a joined dc over 1st 2 sts, 1 dc in each of last 2 sts.  (3 sts)

Row 19:  1 ch, work a joined dc over the 3 sts.  Fasten off.

Back Leg

Join white cotton to last st on wrong side under body as shown.

Row 1:  1 ch, work a joined dc over 1st 2 sts, 1 dc in each of next 2 sts, a joined dc over following 2 sts.  Turn.  (4 sts)

Row 2:  1 ch, work a joined dc over 1st 2 sts, 1 dc in each st to end.  Turn.  (3 sts)

Row 3:  1 ch, work a joined dc over 1st 2 sts, 1 dc in next st.  Turn.  (2 sts)

Row 4:  1 ch, work a joined dc over both sts, 1 dc in same st as last part of joined dc.  Turn.

Row 5:  1 ch, work 1 dc in 1st st, a joined dc over 1st st and last st.  Turn.

Row 6:  1 ch, work a joined dc over both sts.  Turn.

Row 7:  1 ch, work 1 dc in st.  6 ch.

Row 8:  Miss 1 ch, work 1 dc in each of next 2 sts.  Fasten off.

Neatening Row

Join white cotton to bottom of neck edge.

Work 1 sl st in each st around body and leg, sl st in neck and fasten off.

Back Far Leg

Using white cotton work 5 ch.

Row 1:  Miss 1st ch and work 1 dc in each st to end.  Turn.

Row 2:  1 ch, work 1 dc in each st to end.  Turn.

Row 3:  1 ch, work a joined dc over 1st 2 sts, 1 dc in each st to end.  Turn.

Row 4:  1 ch, work 1 dc in 1st st, a joined dc over last 2 sts.  Turn.

Row 5:  1 ch, work 1 dc in 1st st, a joined dc over 1st st and last st.  Turn.

Row 6:  1 ch, work a joined dc over both sts.  Turn.

Row 7:  1 ch, work 1 dc in st.  6 ch.

Row 8:  Miss 1 ch, work 1 dc in each of next 2 sts.  Don’t fasten off.

Work 1 sl st in each st around leg.  Fasten off.

Front Legs (Make 2)

Using white cotton work 6 ch.

Row 1:  Work 1 dc in 2nd ch from hook, 1 htr in next st, 1 tr in following st, 1 htr in next st and 1 dc in last st.  Turn.

Row 2:  1 ch, work 1 dc in each st to end.  Turn.

Row 3:  1 ch, work a joined dc over 1st 2 sts, 1 dc in next st, a joined dc over last 2 sts.  Turn.

Row 4:  1 ch, work 1 dc in each st to end.  Turn.

Row 5:  1 ch, work a joined dc over 1st 2 sts and a joined dc over same st as last part of joined dc and last st.  Turn.

Row 6:  1 ch, work 1 dc in each st.  Turn.

Row 7:  1 ch, work a joined dc over both sts.  Turn.

Row 8:  1 ch, work 1 dc in st.  6 ch.

Row 9: Miss 1 ch, work 1 dc in each of next 2 sts.  Don’t fasten off.

Work 1 sl st in each st around leg.  Fasten off.

Hooves

Join black cotton to 1st st at end of hoof.

1 ch, work 1 dc in same st as ch, 2 dc in next st.  Fasten off.

Mane

Join white cotton to 8th st down from head on back.

1 ch, work 1 dc in same st as ch, 1 dc in next st.  Fasten off.

Join black cotton in next st towards the head.

2 ch, work 1 htr in same st as ch and 2 htr in next st.  Fasten off.

3 ch, work 1 tr in same st as ch and 2 tr in next st.  Fasten off.

3 ch, work 1 tr in same st as ch and 2 tr in next st.  Fasten off.

Join white cotton in 1st st on head.

3 ch, work 1 tr in same st as ch and 2 tr in next st.  Fasten off.

Ear

Using white cotton work 5 ch.

Work 1 sl st in 2nd ch from hook, 1 sl st in next st and 1 dc in each of following 2 sts.  Fasten off.

Inner Ear

Join pink cotton to end of ear on the side curving in.

Work 1 dc in each st to last st, sl st in last st.  Fasten off.

Tail

Join white cotton to back where shown.

10 ch, miss 1 ch and work 1 sl st in each ch, sl st into back and fasten off.

Tail End

Join black cotton to end of tail.

2 ch, work 1 htr in same st as ch.  Fasten off.

If desired join black cotton in the same stitch and work another tail end section the same as the 1st tail end section.

Stripes

Using black cotton work lengths of chain for the thicker stripes and embroider the stripes on the lower legs, tail and face.

To Make Up

Weave in ends.  Stitch stripes to legs and embroider stripes to lower legs.

Embroider marks on face.

Stitch the ear to the head.

Attach legs to body.

Embroider stripes to tail.

Sew remaining stripes to body.
