Welcome to my crochet violin pattern. This pattern was another request. This is what the finished violin applique will look like.

Crochet Violin Pattern
Abbreviations
- st – stitch
- sts – stitches
- ch – chain
- sl st – slip stitch
- dc – double crochet
- htr – half treble crochet
- tr – treble crochet
- dtr – double treble crochet
Materials Used
- Any thickness crochet cotton or yarn, I used Scheepjes Maxi Sweet Treat 2 ply crochet cotton colours (254) Moon Rock, (242) Metal Grey, (162) Black Coffee, (130) Old Lace and (110) Black.
- A crochet hook, I used a 1mm hook.
- A darning needle to weave in ends.
- Scissors.
- Cream thread and needle to embroider on the strings.
Size
Large violin (Using 8 ply yarn & a 3mm hook)
12cm wide x 20cm high or 5” wide x 8” high
Medium violin (Using 4 ply crochet cotton & a 1.5mm hook)
10cm wide x 14.5cm high or 4” wide x 5.75” high
Small violin (Using 2 ply crochet cotton & a 1mm hook)
7cm wide x 10cm high or 2.75” wide x 4” high
Body
Using (254) Moon Rock work 8 ch.
Row 1: Work 1 dc in 2nd ch from hook, 1 htr in next ch, 1 tr in following ch, 1 dtr in next ch, 1 tr in following ch, 1 htr in next ch, 1 dc in last ch. Turn. (7 sts)
Row 2: 1 ch, work 2 dc in 1st st, 1 dc in each of next 5 sts, 2 dc in last st. Turn. (9 sts)
Row 3: 1 ch, work 2 dc in 1st st, 1 dc in each of next 7 sts, 2 dc in last st. Turn. (11 sts)
Rows 4-7: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each st. Turn. (11 sts)
Row 8: Sl st in each of 1st 3 sts, 1 ch, work 1 dc in same st as ch, 1 dc in each of next 6 sts. Turn. (7 sts)
Rows 9-11: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each st. Turn. (7 sts)
Row 12: 1 ch, work 2 dc in 1st st, 1 dc in each of next 5 sts, 2 dc in last st. Turn. (9 sts)
Row 13: 1 ch, work 2 dc in 1st st, 1 dc in each of next 7 sts, 2 dc in last st. 2 ch. (11 sts + 2 ch)
Row 14: Work 1 dc in 2nd ch from hook and 1 dc in each st to end. 2 ch. (12 sts + 2 ch)
Row 15: Work 1 dc in 2nd ch from hook and 1 dc in each st to end. Turn. (13 sts)
Row 16: 1 ch, work a joined dc over 1st 2 sts, 1 dc in each of next 9 sts, a joined dc over last 2 sts. Turn. (11 sts)
Row 17: 1 ch, work 2 dc in 1st st, 1 dc in each of next 9 sts, 2 dc in last st. Turn. (13 sts)
Row 18: 1 ch, work 2 dc in 1st st, 1 dc in each of next 11 sts, 2 dc in last st. Turn. (15 sts)
Rows 19-20: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each st. Turn. (15 sts)
Row 21: 1 ch, work a joined dc over 1st 2 sts, 1 dc in each of next 11 sts, a joined dc over last 2 sts. Turn. (13 sts)
Row 22: 1 ch, work a joined dc over 1st 2 sts, 1 dc in each of next 9 sts, a joined dc over last 2 sts. Turn. (11 sts)
Row 23: 1 ch, work 1 dc in 1st st, 1 htr in next st, 1 tr in each of following 7 sts, 1 htr in next st, 1 dc in last st. Don’t turn or fasten off.
Neatening Row
1 ch, work 1 dc in each st around except for the 4 corner stitches at sides where violin dips in. Work 1 dc, 1 ch and 1 dc in these 4 sts. Join with a sl st in top of 1st st. Fasten off.
Contrast Row
Join (162) Black Coffee to any st.
1 ch, work 1 sl st in each st around except for the 4 ch worked in corner stitches at sides where violin dips in. Work 1 sl st, 1 ch and 1 sl st in these 4 sts. Join with a sl st in top of 1st st. Fasten off.
Neck
Using (242) Metal Grey work 22 ch.
Miss 1st ch, work 1 dc in each of next 2 ch, 1 htr in each of following 5 ch, 1 tr in each ch to end. Fasten off.
Join (162) Black Coffee to back of 1st ch.
Work 1 sl st in back of each ch, 1 ch, 1 sl st in each st across thin end, 1 ch, 1 sl st in back loop of each st to top of last tr. Fasten off.
Top of Neck
Join (254) Moon Rock to middle of thin end of handle.
2 ch, work 4 htr in same st as join, 2 ch, sl st in same st as join. Fasten off.
Pegs (Make 4)
Using (162) Black Coffee make a magic loop.
1 ch, work 2 dc in magic loop, 1 ch, sl st in magic loop. Pull circle tight. Work 2 ch. Fasten off leaving a long tail to attach them to the neck.
Bow
Using (162) Black Coffee work 40 ch.
Row 1: Miss 1st ch, work 1 sl st in each of next 2 ch, 1 ch, 1 htr in next ch, 2 ch, sl st in same st as htr, 1 sl st in each ch until 2 ch left, 1 ch, 1 htr in each of last 2 ch. Fasten off.
Join (130) Old Lace to top of 1st htr.
Row 2: Work 1 dc in each st to next htr, sl st in top of htr. Fasten off.
Chin Rest
Using (242) Metal Grey work 6 ch.
Row 1: Work 1 dc in 2nd ch from hook, 1 htr in each of next 3 ch, 1 dc in last ch.
Join (110) Black to 1st st leaving a long tail for the neatening row and leave the Metal Grey where it is.
Row 2: 1 ch, work 1 dc in 1st st, 1 htr in next st, 1 tr in following st, 1 htr in next st, 1 dc in last st. Fasten off.
Neatening Row
Using the colours of the piece work 1 sl st in each st around. Join with a sl st in the 1st st. Fasten off.
Tailpiece
Using (110) Black make a magic loop.
Row 1: 1 ch, work 1 dc in circle. Pull circle tight. Turn. (1 st)
Row 2: 1 ch, work 1 dc in st. Turn. (1 st)
Row 3: 1 ch, work 2 dc in st. Turn. (2 sts)
Row 4: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each st. Turn. (2 sts)
Row 5: 1 ch, work 1 dc in 1st st, 2 dc in last st. Turn. (3 sts)
Row 6: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each st. Turn.
Join in (242) Metal Grey.
Row 7: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each st. Turn. (3 sts)
Row 8: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each st. Fasten off.
To Make Up
Weave in ends. Attach the pegs to the narrow end sides of the neck, 2 on each side as shown.
Stitch neck to body where shown.
Sew the tailpiece to the bottom of the violin.
Attach the chin rest near the tailpiece.
Embroider 4 rows of stitching between the tailpiece and top of neck.
Embroider on the bridge.
Embroider 2 F holes where shown.
And there’s the finished violin appliqué. I’ve also made it in different sizes and colours.
