Welcome to my crochet tank pattern. This is another request that I received. The finished tank applique will look like this.

Crochet Tank Pattern
Abbreviations
- st – stitch
- sts – stitches
- ch – chain
- sl st – slip stitch
- dc – double crochet
- htr – half treble crochet
- tr – treble crochet
- dtr – double treble crochet
Materials Used
- Crochet cotton or wool, I used Scheepjes Maxi Sweet Treat 2 ply crochet cotton colours (244) Spruce, (212) Sage Green, (074) Mercury and (110) Black.
- A crochet hook, I used a 1mm hook.
- Scissors.
- Darning needle to weave in ends.
- Sewing thread and needle to stitch the tank together.
Size
Large tank (Using 8 ply crochet cotton & a 3mm hook)
16cm x 10.5cm or 6.5” x 4.25”
Medium tank (Using 4 ply crochet cotton & a 1.5mm hook)
10cm x 7cm or 3.75” x 2.75”
Small tank (Using 2 ply crochet cotton & a 1mm hook)
8cm x 5.5cm or 3.25” x 2.5”
Body
Using (244) Spruce work 32 ch.
Row 1: Miss 1st ch and work 1 dc in each st to end. Turn. (31 sts)
Row 2: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each st. Turn. (31 sts)
Row 3: 1 ch, work a joined dc over 1st 2 sts, 1 dc in each st to last 2 sts, a joined dc over last 2 sts. Turn. (29 sts)
Row 4: 1 ch, work a joined dc over 1st 2 sts, 1 dc in each st to last 2 sts, a joined dc over last 2 sts. Turn. (27 sts)
Row 5: 1 ch, work a joined dc over 1st 2 sts, 1 dc in each st to last 2 sts, a joined dc over last 2 sts. Don’t turn or fasten off.
Neatening Row
1 ch, work 1 dc in each st around, join with a sl st in top of 1st st. Fasten off.
Middle Level of Body
Join (212) Sage Green to 4th st along top.
Row 1: 1 ch, work a joined dc over 1st 2 sts, 1 dc in each of next 17 sts, a joined dc over following 2 sts. Turn. (19 sts)
Row 2: 1 ch, work a joined dc over 1st 2 sts, 1 dc in each st to last 2 sts, a joined dc over last 2 sts. Turn. (17 sts)
Row 3: 1 ch, work a joined dc over 1st 2 sts, 1 dc in each st to last 2 sts, a joined dc over last 2 sts. Turn. (15 sts)
Row 4: 1 ch, work a joined dc over 1st 2 sts, 1 dc in each st to last 2 sts, a joined dc over last 2 sts. Fasten off.
Neatening Row
Join cotton to 1st st of row 1 on right side as shown.
Work 1 dc in each st around middle body section. Fasten off.
Top Body Section
Join (244) Spruce to 3rd st back from centre st.
Row 1: 2 ch, work 1 htr in same st as ch and 1 htr in each of next 5 sts. Turn.
Row 2: 2 ch, work a joined htr over 1st 2 sts, 1 htr in each of next 2 sts and a joined htr over last 2 sts. Turn.
Row 3: 2 ch, work a joined htr over 1st 2 sts and a joined htr over last 2 sts. Fasten off.
Neatening Row
Join cotton to 1st st of row 1 on right side as shown.
Work 1 dc in each st around top section. Fasten off.
Inner Wheels (Make 4)
Using Mercury make a magic loop.
1 ch, work 6 dc into circle. Pull circle tight and sl st in top of 1st st. Fasten off.
Outer Wheel
Join Black cotton to any st on inner wheel.
2 ch, work 2 tr in each st, join with a sl st in top of 1st st. Fasten off.
Gun
Using Mercury work 16 ch.
Miss 2 ch and work 1 htr in each of next 4 sts, 1 tr in each of following 5 sts and 1 dtr in each st to end, 3 ch, work a sl st in last st. Fasten off.
To Make Up
Weave in ends. Stitch the wheels evenly along the bottom as shown.
Sew the gun in behind the top level of the body.
Crochet the track to fit around the wheels.
Track
Using black work enough chain to go around the wheels. I worked 70 chain.
Work 1 dc in 2nd ch from hook, 1 htr in next st, 2 ch, sl st in same st as htr, (work 1 dc in next st, 1 htr in following st, 2 ch, sl st in same st as htr) repeat to end of row. Don’t fasten off until you have stitched most of the track around the wheel and made sure it isn’t too long.
Stitch the tracks around the wheels.
And there’s the finished tank applique. I’ve also made it in different colours and sizes.
