Welcome to my crochet swallow pattern. This pattern was another request. This is what the finished swallow applique will look like.

Crochet Swallow Pattern
Abbreviations
- st – stitch
- sts – stitches
- ch – chain
- sl st – slip stitch
- sc – single crochet
- hdc – half double crochet
- dc – double crochet
- tr – treble crochet
Materials Used
- Any thickness crochet cotton or yarn, I used Scheepjes Maxi Sweet Treat 2 ply crochet cotton colors (201) Electric Blue, (106) Snow White, (393) Charcoal and (115) Hot Red.
- A crochet hook, I used a 1mm hook.
- A darning needle to weave in ends.
- Blue thread to stitch the bird together and black thread to embroider on an eye.
- Scissors.

Size
Large swallow (Using 8 ply yarn & a 3mm hook)
10cm wide x 8cm high or 3.75” wide x 3” high
Medium swallow (Using 4 ply crochet cotton & a 1.5mm hook)
5.5cm wide x 5cm high or 2.25” wide x 2” high
Small swallow (Using 2 ply crochet cotton & a 1mm hook)
4.5cm wide x 4cm high or 1.75” wide x 1.5” high
Head
Using (115) Hot Red work 3 ch.
Row 1: Work 1 sl st in 2nd ch from hook, 1 sc in last ch. Fasten off leaving a tail to neaten head.

Join (106) Snow White to sl st. I left a long tail to use for the neatening row.

Row 2: 1 ch, work 2 sc in same st as join. Turn. (2 sts)
Row 3: 1 ch, work 2 sc in 1st st, 1 sc in last st. Turn. (3 sts)
Rows 4-6: 1 ch, work 1 sc in each st. Turn. (3 sts)
Row 7: 1 ch, work a joined sc over 1st 2 sts, 1 sc in last st. Turn. (2 sts)
Row 8: 1 ch, work 1 sc in each st. Turn. (2 sts)
Row 9: 1 ch, work a joined sc over both sts. Fasten off.

Neatening Row
Turn work before neatening row.
Using the (106) Snow White left at beginning, work 1 sl st in each st around the white section. Fasten off.

Tail
Join (201) Electric Blue to end side of body.

10 ch. Miss 2 ch, work 1 sl st in each of next 2 ch, 1 sc in each of following 4 ch, 8 ch. Miss 2 ch, work 1 sl st in each of next 2 ch, 1 sc in each ch to join, 1 hdc in next ch, 1 dc in last ch. Work 1 sc in back loop only of each st to last st along back, work 3 sc in last st. Sl st in top of red section. Fasten off.

Neaten Head
Using the (115) Hot Red left from row 1 work 1 sl st in each st around the head. Fasten off.

Beak
Join (393) Charcoal to end of head where shown.

1 ch, work a joined sc over same st as join and next st. Fasten off.

White Part of Front Wing
Using (106) Snow White work 4 ch.
Work 2 hdc in 3rd ch from hook, 1 dc in last ch, 3 ch, miss 1st ch, work 1 sc in each remaining ch. Sl st in top of 2nd hdc. Fasten off. I left a long tail to stitch it down.

Blue Part of Front Wing
Join (201) Electric Blue 3 sts before start of tail, leaving a long tail for the neatening row.

Row 1: 1 ch, work 1 sc in same st as join and each of next 3 sts. Turn. (4 sts)
Row 2: 1 ch, work 1 sc in each st. Turn. (4 sts)
Row 3: 1 ch, work a joined sc over 1st 2 sts, 1 sc in each of last 2 sts. Turn. (3 sts)
Row 4: Work 9 ch. Work 1 sl st into 2nd ch from hook, 1 sc in each of next 2 ch, 1 hdc in each of following 2 ch, 1 dc in each of next 2 ch, 1 tr in last ch. Sl st in end of row 3. Fasten off.

Neatening Side of Wing
Using the yarn from beginning of wing work (2 ch, sl st in next st) repeat to 2 sts before tip of wing, sl st to tip of wing. Fasten off.

Back Wing
Using (201) Electric Blue work 10 ch. Work 1 sl st in 2nd ch from hook, 1 sc in each of next 2 ch, 1 hdc in each of following 2 ch, 1 dc in each of next 2 ch, a joined tr over last 2 ch, 3 ch, sl st in last ch. Working along the back of the chain work (2 ch, sl st in next st) repeat to 2 sts before tip of wing, sl st to tip of wing. Fasten off.

To Make Up
Weave in ends. Embroider an eye to the head.

Stitch the back wing behind the front wing.

Attach the white part of the wing to the front of the wing.

And there’s the finished swallow applique. I’ve also made it in different sizes.
