Welcome to my crochet submarine pattern. This pattern was another request. This is what the finished submarine applique will look like.

Crochet Submarine Pattern
Abbreviations
- st – stitch
- sts – stitches
- ch – chain
- sl st – slip stitch
- dc – double crochet
- htr – half treble crochet
- tr – treble crochet
Materials Used
- Any thickness crochet cotton or yarn, I used Scheepjes Maxi Sweet Treat 2 ply crochet cotton colours (208) Yellow Gold, (146) Vivid Blue and (173) Bluebell.
- A crochet hook, I used a 1mm hook.
- A darning needle to weave in ends.
- Scissors.
- Thread and needle to stitch the submarine together.
Size
Large submarine (Using 8 ply yarn & a 3mm hook)
18cm wide x 14cm high or 7” wide x 5.5” high
Medium submarine (Using 4 ply crochet cotton & a 1.5mm hook)
14cm wide x 10cm high or 5.5” wide x 4” high
Small submarine (Using 2 ply crochet cotton & a 1mm hook)
10cm wide x 7cm high or 4” wide x 2.75” high
Submarine Body
Using (146) Vivid Blue work 10 ch.
Row 1: Miss 1st ch, work 1 dc in each of next 2 ch, 1 htr in each of following 2 ch, 1 tr in next ch, 1 htr in each of following 2 ch, 1 dc in each of last 2 ch. Turn. (9 sts)
Row 2: 1 ch, work 2 dc in 1st st, 1 dc in each st to last st, 2 dc in last st. Turn. (11 sts)
Row 3: 1 ch, work 2 dc in 1st st, 1 dc in next st, 1 htr in each of following 2 sts, 1 tr in each of next 3 sts, 1 htr in each of following 2 sts, 1 dc in next st, 2 dc in last st. Turn. (13 sts)
Join in (208) Yellow Gold but leave the (146) Vivid Blue attached for the neatening row.
Row 4: 2 ch, work 1 htr in each of 1st 4 sts, 1 dc in each of following 5 sts, 1 htr in each of last 4 sts. Turn. (13 sts)
Row 5: 1 ch, work 2 dc in 1st st, 1 dc in each st to last st, 2 dc in last st. Turn. (15 sts)
Row 6: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each st. Turn. (15 sts)
Row 7: 1 ch, work 2 dc in 1st st, 1 dc in each st to last st, 2 dc in last st. Turn. (17 sts)
Row 8: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each st. Turn. (17 sts)
Row 9: 1 ch, work 2 dc in 1st st, 1 dc in each st to last st, 2 dc in last st. Turn. (19 sts)
Rows 10-19: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each st. Turn. (19 sts)
Row 20: 1 ch, work a joined dc over 1st 2 sts, 1 dc in each st to last 2 sts, a joined dc over last 2 sts. Turn. (17 sts)
Rows 21-23: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each st. Turn. (17 sts)
Row 24: 1 ch, work a joined dc over 1st 2 sts, 1 dc in each st to last 2 sts, a joined dc over last 2 sts. Turn. (15 sts)
Rows 25-26: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each st. Turn. (15 sts)
Row 27: 1 ch, work a joined dc over 1st 2 sts, 1 dc in each st to last 2 sts, a joined dc over last 2 sts. Turn. (13 sts)
Row 28: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each st. Turn. (13 sts)
Row 29: 1 ch, work a joined dc over 1st 2 sts, 1 dc in each st to last 2 sts, a joined dc over last 2 sts. Turn. (11 sts)
Row 30: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each st. Turn. (11 sts)
Row 31: 1 ch, work a joined dc over 1st 2 sts, 1 dc in each st to last 2 sts, a joined dc over last 2 sts. Turn. (9 sts)
Row 32: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each st. Turn. (9 sts)
Row 33: 1 ch, work a joined dc over 1st 2 sts, 1 dc in each st to last 2 sts, a joined dc over last 2 sts. Turn. (7 sts)
Row 34: 1 ch, work a joined dc over 1st 2 sts, 1 dc in each st to last 2 sts, a joined dc over last 2 sts. Turn. (5 sts)
Row 35: 1 ch, work a joined dc over 1st 2 sts, 1 dc in next st, a joined dc over last 2 sts. Turn. (3 sts)
Row 36: 1 ch, work a joined dc over the 3 sts. Fasten off.
Neatening Row
Turn work before neatening row.
Starting with the Vivid Blue left work 1 dc in each st around the Vivid Blue. Join in (208) Yellow Gold and work 1 dc in each st around to beginning of row. Join with a sl st in top of 1st st. Fasten off.
Tower
Find centre st at top, join (146) Vivid Blue 3 sts back from centre leaving a long tail for neatening row.
Row 1: 1 ch, work 1 dc in same st as join, 1 dc in each of next 10 sts. Turn. (11 sts)
Row 2: 1 ch, work joined dc over 1st 2 sts, 1 dc in each of next 7 sts, a joined dc over last 2 sts. Turn. (9 sts)
Row 3: 1 ch work a joined dc over 1st 2 sts, 1 dc in each of next 5 sts, a joined dc over last 2 sts. Fasten off.
Neatening Row
Using the tail left at beginning of tower work 1 dc in each st around tower. Sl st in next st on body. Fasten off.
Periscope
Join (173) Bluebell in 4th st from back top of tower.
11 ch.
Miss 1st ch, work 1 htr in each of next 3 ch, a joined htr over following 3 ch, 1 htr in each of last 4 ch. Sl st in next st on tower. Fasten off.
End of Periscope
Using (146) Vivid Blue work 5 ch.
Work 1 htr in 2nd ch from hook, work 1 htr in each of next 2 ch and through the end of periscope, 1 htr in last ch. Fasten off.
Portholes (Make 3)
Using (173) Bluebell make a magic loop.
Row 1: 2 ch, work 12 tr in circle, pull circle tight and join with a sl st in top of 1st st.
Join in (146) Vivid Blue.
Row 2: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each st. Join with a sl st in top of 1st st. Fasten off.
Propeller
Using (146) Vivid Blue make a magic loop.
(5 ch, work 1 dc in 2nd ch from hook, 1 htr in next ch, 1 dc in following ch, sl st in last ch, sl st in circle) 2 times, 2 ch. Fasten off leaving a tail to attach it to the submarine.
1st Fin
Join (146) Vivid Blue in 4th st after centre back st leaving a tail at beginning to use for the neatening row.
Row 1: 1 ch, work 1 dc in same st as join, 1 dc in each of next 3 sts. Turn. (4 sts)
Row 2: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each st. Turn. (4 sts)
Row 3: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each of 1st 2 sts, a joined dc over last 2 sts. Turn. (3 sts)
Row 4: 1 ch, work a joined dc over 1st 2 sts, 1 dc in last st. Turn. (2 sts)
Row 5: 1 ch, work a joined dc over the 2 sts. Turn. (1 st)
Row 6: 1 ch, work 1 dc in st. Fasten off.
Neatening Row
Turn work before neatening row.
Using the tail left at beginning work 1 sl st in each st around. Fasten off.
2nd Fin
Join (146) Vivid Blue in 7th st before centre back st leaving a tail at the beginning to use for the neatening row.
Row 1: 1 ch, work 1 dc in same st as join, 1 dc in each of next 3 sts. Turn. (4 sts)
Row 2: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each st. Turn. (4 sts)
Row 3: 1 ch, work a joined dc over 1st 2 sts, 1 dc in each of last 2 sts. Turn. (3 sts)
Row 4: 1 ch, work 1 dc in 1st st, a joined dc over last 2 sts. Turn. (2 sts)
Row 5: 1 ch, work a joined dc over the 2 sts. Turn. (1 st)
Row 6: 1 ch, work 1 dc in st. Fasten off.
Neatening Row
Turn work before neatening row.
Using the tail left at beginning work 1 sl st in each st around. Fasten off.
To Make Up
Weave in ends. Attach the propeller to the centre back of the submarine.
Stitch the portholes evenly along the body.
