Welcome to my crochet snail pattern. This pattern was another request. This is what the finished snail applique will look like.

Crochet Snail Pattern
Abbreviations
- st – stitch
- sts – stitches
- ch – chain
- sl st – slip stitch
- sc – single crochet
- hdc – half double crochet
- dc – double crochet
Materials Used
- Any thickness crochet cotton or yarn, I used Scheepjes Maxi Sweet Treat 2 ply crochet cotton colors (179) Topaz, (162) Black Coffee, (606) Grass Green and (513) Spring Green.
- A crochet hook, I used a 1mm hook.
- A darning needle to weave in ends.
- Scissors.
- Red embroidery thread to embroider on the mouth if desired.
- 2 black beads for the eyes and white thread or paint for dot in centre of eyes.

Size
Large snail (Using 8 ply yarn & a 3mm hook)
8.5cm wide x 6.5cm high or 3.5” wide x 2.5” high
Medium snail (Using 4 ply crochet cotton & a 1.5mm hook)
5.5cm wide x 4.5cm high or 2” wide x 1.75” high
Small snail (Using 2 ply crochet cotton & a 1mm hook)
4cm wide x 3.5cm high or 1.75” wide x 1.5” high
Shell
Using (179) Topaz make a magic loop.
Row 1: 1 ch, work 1 sc, 1 hdc and 3 dc in circle. Pull circle tight but don’t join. (5 sts)
Row 2: Work 2 dc in back loop only of each of the 5 sts from row 1. Don’t Join. (10 sts)

Row 3: Work 2 dc in back loop only of each of next 14 sts around shell. Work 2 sc down the side of the last dc and 1 sc in back loop of next st, sl st in following st. Fasten off.

Join (162) Black Coffee to 1st front loop left near centre.

Work 1 sl st in each front loop left and 1 sl st in back loop only of each st around outside of shell. Fasten off.

Head
Using (606) Grass Green work 4 ch.
Row 1: Miss 1st ch, work 1 sc in each remaining ch. Turn. (3 sts)
Row 2: 1 ch, work 2 sc in 1st st, 1 sc in next st, 2 sc in last st. Turn. (5 sts)
Row 3: 1 ch, work 1 sc in each st. Turn. (5 sts)
Row 4: 1 ch, work a joined sc over 1st 2 sts, 1 sc in next st, a joined sc over last 2 sts. Don’t turn or fasten off.

Body
Row 1: Work 3 ch. Join to shell by working 1 sc in outside loop of 1st 9 sts along bottom of shell where shown. 3 ch.

Row 2: Work 1 sl st in 2nd ch from hook, 1 sc in last ch, 1 sc in each of 1st 5 sts, 2 hdc in each of next 4 sts, 1 sc in 2nd ch and 1 sc in 3rd ch, join to head in 1st st with a sl st. Fasten off.

Join (513) Spring Green to next st of head where shown.

Row 3: Work 2 hdc in 1st st, 1 dc in each of next 4 sts, 2 dc in following st, 1 hdc in each of next 3 sts, 1 sc in each of following 4 sts, 2 sc in next st, 1 sc in each remaining st. Sl st in ch left at end. Fasten off.

Neatening Row & Antennae
Join (606) Grass Green to 1st green st near neck.

Work 1 sl st in each st to 1st st of row 1, 4 ch, work 1 hdc in 2nd ch from hook, 1 sl st in each remaining ch, sl st in same st and next 2 sts, 4 ch, work 1 hdc in 2nd ch from hook, 1 sl st in each remaining ch, sl st in same st and each st to end of Grass Green. Fasten off.

To Make Up
Weave in ends. Embroider on a mouth.

Attach the 2 beads to head for the eyes or embroider on eyes.

Add a white dot in centre of each bead.

And there’s the finished snail applique. I’ve also made it in different sizes and colors.
