Welcome to my crochet small butterfly pattern. This pattern was another request. This is what the finished small butterfly applique will look like.

Crochet Small Butterfly Pattern
Abbreviations
- st – stitch
- sts – stitches
- ch – chain
- sl st – slip stitch
- dc – double crochet
- htr – half treble crochet
- tr – treble crochet
Materials Used
- Any thickness crochet cotton or yarn, I used Scheepjes Maxi Sweet Treat 2 ply crochet cotton colours (110) Black and (146) Vivid Blue.
- A crochet hook, I used a 1mm hook.
- A darning needle to weave in ends.
- Scissors.

Size
Large butterfly (Using 8 ply yarn & a 3mm hook)
9.5cm wide x 7.5cm high or 3.75” wide x 3” high
Medium butterfly (Using 4 ply crochet cotton & a 1.5mm hook)
5.5cm wide x 5cm high or 2.25” wide x 2” high
Small butterfly (Using 2 ply crochet cotton & a 1mm hook)
5cm wide x 4.5cm high or 2” wide x 1.75” high
Body
Using (110) Black make a magic loop. I left a long tail at beginning to work an antenna.
Row 1: 3 ch, work a 3 tr cluster in circle. Pull circle tight. Don’t join. Turn.
Row 2: 3 ch, work a 2 tr cluster into top of 3 tr cluster. Turn.
Row 3: 3 ch, work a 2 tr cluster into top of last cluster. 2 ch, sl st in 2nd ch from hook, sl st in top of last cluster. Fasten off.

1st Top Wing
Join (146) Vivid Blue to top of 1st 2 tr cluster just after head, where shown. Work 9 ch.

Row 1: Miss 2 ch, work 1 tr in each of next 2 ch, 1 htr in each of following 2 ch, 1 dc in each of next 2 ch, sl st in last ch, sl st in same st on body as join, sl st in next st. Turn.
Row 2: Working into back loop only work 1 sl st in 1st st, 1 dc in each of next 2 sts, 1 htr in each of following 2 sts, 1 tr in each of last 2 sts. Turn.
Row 3: 2 ch, working into back loop only work a joined tr over 1st 2 sts, 1 htr in each of next 2 sts, 1 dc in each of following 2 sts, 1 sl st in last st. Sl st in same st as last st along edge of cluster. Fasten off.

2nd Top Wing
Join (146) Vivid Blue to top of 1st 2 tr cluster just after head on wrong side, where shown. Work 9 ch.

Row 1: Miss 2 ch, work 1 tr in each of next 2 ch, 1 htr in each of following 2 ch, 1 dc in each of next 2 ch, sl st in last ch, sl st in same st on body as join, sl st in next st. Turn.
Row 2: Working into back loop only work 1 sl st in 1st st, 1 dc in each of next 2 sts, 1 htr in each of following 2 sts, 1 tr in each of last 2 sts. Turn.
Row 3: 2 ch, working into back loop only work a joined tr over 1st 2 sts, 1 htr in each of next 2 sts, 1 dc in each of following 2 sts, 1 sl st in last st. Sl st in same st as last st along edge of cluster. Fasten off.

Edge (Work around both wings)
Join (110) Black to body near wing. I left a long tail at top of 1st wing to weave to top of head for the antenna.

Work 1 sl st in each st to corner, work 1 or 2 dc in each st along end and around next corner, 1 sl st in each st to body. Fasten off.



Bottom Wings
Using (146) Vivid Blue make a magic loop.
Row 1: Work 7 ch, work 2 tr in 3rd ch from hook, 1 htr in each of next 2 ch, 1 dc in following ch, 1 sl st in last ch, sl st in circle. Turn.
Row 2: Working in back loop only work 1 sl st in 1st st, 1 dc in next st, 1 htr in each of following 2 sts, 1 tr in each of last 2 sts. Turn.
Row 3: 2 ch, working into back loop only work a joined tr over 1st 2 sts, 1 htr in each of next 2 sts, 1 dc in following st, sl st in last st. Sl st in circle.
Row 4: Work 7 ch, work 2 tr in 3rd ch from hook, 1 htr in each of next 2 ch, 1 dc in following ch, 1 sl st in last ch, sl st in circle. Turn.
Row 5: Working in back loop only work 1 sl st in 1st st, 1 dc in next st, 1 htr in each of following 2 sts, 1 tr in each of last 2 sts. Turn.
Row 6: 2 ch, working into back loop only work a joined tr over 1st 2 sts, 1 htr in each of next 2 sts, 1 dc in following st, sl st in last st. Pull circle tight and fasten off.

Edge
Join (110) Black to centre of wings. I left longer tails at each end to attach the wings to the butterfly.

Work 1 sl st in each st to corner, work 1 or 2 dc in each st along end and around next corner, 1 sl st in each st to centre of wing, 1 sl st in each st to corner, work 1 or 2 dc in each st along end and around next corner, 1 sl st in each st to centre of wing, Fasten off.

Antennas
Using the yarn left at beginning and around the wing work 9 ch, work 1 htr in 2nd ch from hook. Fasten off.

To Make Up
Weave in ends. Attach the bottom wings behind body where shown.
And there’s the finished small butterfly applique. I’ve also made it in different sizes and colours.
