Both my mother and sister have been very sick over the past year and have spent some time in hospital.  As hospitals can get cold I made them a shawl each to keep them warm.

I used black 8 ply yarn for both shawls so the appliqués would stand out better.

Mum wanted her shawl similar to one I made for myself with lots of flowers but picked which appliqués she’d like.  All the appliqués and flowers except for the flowers at the top were made using Scheepjes Maxi Sweet Treat.  The flowers at the top were made using Scheepjes Catona cotton.

She chose a baby elephant because she had always wanted her father to buy her an elephant to keep on the farm.  The dolphin was to represent the time she spent near the sea in Papua New Guinea and the penguin for her time in Tasmania.  She had a galah named Linda for many years and always owned and loved dogs so chose a poodle, a Jack Russell and a sausage dog.

Other appliqués she chose were a pheasant because my dad had asked me to design one just before he passed away.  A peacock, a deer and the flowers.

I didn’t have much time to make the shawl for my sister so we chose fewer appliqués.  We used the lady and man appliqués, the poodle, the Jack Russell, the dove and tree appliqués.  I also added some flowers.

All the appliqués were hand stitched to the shawls.
