Welcome to my crochet raccoon. I have received a few requests to make this one. This is what the finished raccoon applique will look like.

Crochet Raccoon Pattern
Abbreviations
- st – stitch
- sts – stitches
- ch – chain
- sl st – slip stitch
- sc – single crochet
- hdc – half double crochet
- dc – double crochet
- tr – treble crochet
Materials Used
- Crochet cotton or wool, I used Scheepjes Maxi Sweet Treat 2 ply crochet cotton colors (074) Mercury, (242) Metal Grey, (393) Charcoal, (106) Snow White and (110) Black.
- A crochet hook, I used a 1mm hook.
- Scissors.
- Darning needle to weave in ends.
- Sewing thread and needle to stitch the raccoon together.
- A small clear seed bead for each eye if desired.
Size
Large raccoon (Using 8 ply yarn & a 3mm hook)
12.5cm x 20cm or 5” x 8”
Medium raccoon (Using 4 ply crochet cotton & a 1.5mm hook)
8cm x 11cm or 3.25” x 4.25”
Small raccoon (Using 2 ply crochet cotton & a 1mm hook)
6.5cm x 9cm or 2.5” x 3.5”
Bottom of Head
Using (106) Snow White work 10 ch.
Row 1: Work 2 sc in 2nd ch from hook, 1 sc in each st to last st, 2 sc in last st. Turn. (11 sts)
Row 2: 1 ch, work 3 sc in 1st st, 1 sc in each st to last st, 3 sc in last st. Turn. (15 sts)
Row 3: 2 ch, work 2 hdc in each of 1st 2 sts, 1 sc in each st to last 2 sts, 2 hdc in each of last 2 sts. Turn. (19 sts)
Row 4: 3 ch, work 2 dc in 1st st, 1 hdc in next st, 1 sc in each st to last 2 sts, 1 hdc in next st, 2 dc in last st. Turn. (21 sts)
Row 5: 1 ch, work 1 sc in each st to end. Turn. (21 sts)
Row 6: 1 ch, work a joined sc over 1st 2 sts, 1 sc in each st to last 2 sts, a joined sc over last 2 sts. Turn. (19 sts)
Row 7: 1 ch, work a joined sc over 1st 2 sts, 1 sc in each st to last 2 sts, a joined sc over last 2 sts. (17 sts). Don’t turn or fasten off.
Neatening Row
1 ch, work 1 sc in each st to beginning of 1st row, 1 sc in each of 1st 2 sts, 1 hdc in each of next 2 sts, 1 dc in each of following 2 sts, 1 hdc in each of next 2 sts, 1 sc in each st to beginning of row 7, 1 sc in 1st st, 2 hdc in next st, 2 dc in following st, 2 hdc in next st, 1 sc in following st, (1 sl st in each of next 3 sts, 3 ch, miss 1st ch and work 1 sl st in each remaining ch, sl st in same st as the 3 ch) 2 times, 1 sl st in each of next 3 sts, 1 sc in following st, 2 hdc in next st, 2 dc in following st, 2 hdc in next st, sl st in 1st st of neatening row. Fasten off.
Top of Head
Using (074) Mercury work 8 ch.
Row 1: Miss 1st st and work 1 sc in each of next 2 sts, 1 hdc in following st, 1 dc in next st, 1 hdc in following st, 1 sc in each of last 2 sts. Turn. (7 sts)
Row 2: 1 ch, work 2 sc in 1st st, 1 sc in each st to last st, 2 sc in last st. Turn. (9 sts)
Row 3: 1 ch, work 2 sc in 1st st, 1 sc in each st to last st, 2 sc in last st. Turn. (11 sts)
Row 4: 2 ch, work 2 hdc in 1st st, 1 sc in each st to last st, 2 hdc in last st. Turn. (13 sts)
Row 5: 1 ch, work 2 sc in 1st st, 1 sc in each st to last st, 2 sc in last st. Turn. (15 sts)
Row 6: 1 ch, work 1 sc in each st to end. (15 sts). Don’t turn or fasten off.
Neatening Row
1 ch, work 1 sc in each st around straight edge and curve and 2 sc in corner sts. Join with a sl st in top of 1st st. Fasten off.
Head Marking
Using (393) Charcoal work 8 ch.
Row 1: Work 1 sl st in 2nd ch from hook, 1 sc in next st, 1 hdc in following st, 1 dc in next st, 1 hdc in following st, 1 sc in next st, 1 sl st in last st. Fasten off.
Join cotton to st before centre st of row 1.
Row 2: 1 ch, work 1 sc in same st as ch, 1 sc in each of following 2 sts. Turn. (3 sts)
Row 3: 1 ch, work a joined sc over the 3 sts. 9 ch. (1 st + 9 ch)
Row 4: Work 1 hdc in 3rd ch from hook, 1 sc in each ch. Sl st in end of row 3. Fasten off.
Eye Markings (Make 2)
Using (393) Charcoal work 4 ch.
Row 1: Work 1 sc in 2nd ch from hook, 1 dc in next st, 1 sc in last st. Turn. (3 sts)
Row 2: 1 ch, work 2 sc in 1st st, 1 sc in next st, 2 sc in last st. Turn. (5 sts)
Rows 3-6: 1 ch, work 1 sc in each st. Turn. (5 sts)
Row 7: 1 ch, work 1 sc in each st. Don’t turn or fasten off.
Neatening Row
Work 1 sl st in each st around sides and top and 1 sc and 3 ch, in each st to last st along bottom, 1 sc in last st. Fasten off.
Eyes (Make 2)
Using (110) Black make a magic loop.
1 ch, work 5 sc in circle. Pull circle tight and join with a sl st in top of 1st st. Fasten off.
Nose
Using (110) Black make a magic loop.
2 ch, work 4 hdc in circle. Pull circle tight and fasten off.
1st Ear
Using (074) Mercury work 6 ch.
Work 1 sl st in 2nd ch from hook, 1 sc in next st, 1 hdc in following st, 1 dc in next st, 1 tr in last st. Fasten off.
Join (106) Snow White to back loop of ch where shown.
4 ch, work 1 tr in same st as ch, 1 dc in each of next 2 sts, 1 hdc in following st, 1 sc in last st, 1 sl st in top of ch at end. Fasten off.
Join (393) Charcoal to the bottom st on the white part of the ear.
2 ch, work 1 hdc in each st to last st up the side, 1 sc in next st, 1 sl st in next st down other side. Fasten off.
2nd Ear
Using (106) Snow White work 5 ch.
Work 1 sl st in 2nd ch from hook, 1 sc in next st, 1 hdc in following st, 1 dc in last st. Fasten off.
Join (074) Mercury to back loop of ch where shown.
3 ch, work 1 dc in same st as ch and 1 dc in next st, 1 hdc in following st, 1 sc in last st, 1 sl st in top of ch at end. Fasten off.
Join (393) Charcoal to the 2nd top st on the mercury side part of the ear.
Work 1 sl st in next st, 1 sc in following st, 1 hdc in each remaining st down other side. Fasten off.
Body
Using (393) Charcoal work 13 ch.
Row 1: Miss 1st ch and work 1 sc in each st to end. Turn. (12 sts)
Row 2: 1 ch, work 1 sc in each st to last st, 2 sc in last st. Turn. (13 sts)
Row 3: 1 ch, work 2 sc in 1st st, 1 sc in each st to end. Turn. (14 sts)
Row 4: 1 ch, work 1 sc in each st to last st, 2 sc in last st. Turn. (15 sts)
Row 5: 1 ch, work 1 sc in each st to end. Turn. (15 sts)
Row 6: 1 ch, work 1 sc in each st to last st, 2 sc in last st. Turn. (16 sts)
Row 7: 1 ch, work 1 sc in each st to end. Turn. (16 sts)
Row 8: 1 ch, work 1 sc in each st to last st, 2 sc in last st. Turn. (17 sts)
Row 9: 1 ch, work 1 sc in each st to end. Turn. (17 sts)
Row 10: 1 ch, work 1 sc in each st to end. Turn. (17 sts)
Row 11: 1 ch, work a joined sc over 1st 2 sts, 1 sc in each st to end. Turn. (16 sts)
Row 12: 1 ch, work 1 sc in each st to end. Turn. (16 sts)
Row 13: 1 ch, work a joined sc over 1st 2 sts, 1 sc in each st to last 2 sts, a joined sc over last 2 sts. Turn. (14 sts)
Row 14: 1 ch, work a joined sc over 1st 2 sts, 1 sc in each st to end. Turn. (13 sts)
Row 15: 1 ch, work a joined sc over 1st 2 sts, 1 sc in each st to last 2 sts, a joined sc over last 2 sts. Turn. (11 sts)
Row 16: 1 ch, work 1 sc in each st to end. Turn. (11 sts)
Row 17: 1 ch, work a joined sc over 1st 2 sts, 1 sc in each st to last 2 sts, a joined sc over last 2 sts. Turn. (9 sts)
Row 18: 1 ch, work 1 sc in each st to end. Turn. (9 sts)
Row 19: 1 ch, work a joined sc over 1st 2 sts, 1 sc in each st to last 2 sts, a joined sc over last 2 sts. Don’t turn or fasten off.
Neatening Row
1 ch, work a row of sc around the body, join with a sl st in top of 1st st. Fasten off.
Front Legs (Make 2)
Using (242) Metal Grey work 20 ch.
Work 3 hdc in 3rd ch from hook, miss next ch and sl st in following ch, 2 ch, sl st in top of last hdc, 1 hdc in next st, 1 dc in following st, 1 tr in each st to end. Fasten off.
Back Leg
Using (242) Metal Grey work 10 ch.
Row 1: Miss 1st st and work 1 sc in each st to end. Turn. (9 sts)
Row 2: 1 ch, work 2 sc in 1st st, 1 sc in each of next 5 sts. Turn. (7 sts)
Row 3: 1 ch, work 2 sc in 1st st, 1 sc in each st to last st, 2 sc in last st. Turn. (9 sts)
Row 4: 1 ch, work 2 sc in 1st st, 1 sc in each st to last st, 2 sc in last st. Turn. (11 sts)
Row 5: 1 ch, work 1 sc in each st to last st, 2 sc in last st. Turn. (12 sts)
Row 6: 1 ch, work 1 sc in each st to end. Turn. (12 sts)
Row 7: 1 ch, work a joined sc over 1st 2 sts, 1 sc in each st to end. Turn. (11 sts)
Row 8: 1 ch, work 1 sc in each st to last 2 sts, a joined sc over last 2 sts. Turn. (10 sts)
Row 9: 1 ch, work a joined sc over 1st 2 sts, 1 sc in each st to last 2 sts, a joined sc over last 2 sts. Turn. (8 sts)
Row 10: 1 ch, work a joined sc over 1st 2 sts, 1 sc in each st to last 2 sts, a joined sc over last 2 sts. Turn. (6 sts)
Row 11: 1 ch, work a joined sc over 1st 3 sts and a joined sc over last 3 sts. Don’t turn or fasten off.
Neatening Row
1 ch, work sc around the leg except around the top of the foot where you work 1 sl st in each st. Join with a sl st in top of 1st st. Fasten off.
Tail
Using (393) Charcoal make a magic loop.
Row 1: 3 ch, work 3 dc in circle. Pull circle tight.
Join in (074) Mercury, fasten the charcoal off and turn.
Row 2: 1 ch, work 1 sc and 1 hdc in same st as ch, 2 dc in next st, 2 tr in last st. (6 sts)
Join in (393) Charcoal, fasten off the mercury and turn.
Row 3: 3 ch, work 2 dc in 1st st, 1 dc in each st to end. (7 sts) Fasten off.
Join (074) Mercury to top of chain at beginning of row 3.
Row 4: 3 ch, work 1 dc in each of 1st 3 sts, 1 hdc in each st to end. (7 sts) Fasten off.
Join (393) Charcoal to top of chain at beginning of row 4.
Row 5: 4 ch, work 1 tr in each of 1st 2 sts, 1 dc in each of next 2 sts, 1 hdc in each st to end. (7 sts) Fasten off.
Join (074) Mercury to top of chain at beginning of row 5.
Row 6: 3 ch, work 1 dc in each of 1st 2 sts, 1 hdc in each of next 2 sts, 1 sc in each st to end. (7 sts) Turn.
Row 7: 1 ch, work 1 sc in each of 1st 2 sts, 1 hdc in each of next 2 sts, 1 dc in each st to end. (7 sts)
Join in (393) Charcoal, fasten off the mercury and turn.
Row 8: 3 ch, work 1 dc in each of 1st 2 sts, 1 hdc in each of next 2 sts, 1 dc in each st to end. (7 sts) Fasten off.
Join (074) Mercury to top of chain at beginning of row 8.
Row 9: 1 ch, work 1 sc in each st to end. (7 sts) Turn.
Row 10: 1 ch, work a joined sc over 1st 2 sts, 1 sc in each st to last 2 sts, a joined sc over last 2 sts. (5 sts) Turn.
Row 11: 1 ch, work a joined sc over all sts. Fasten off.
Far Back Leg
Join (242) Metal Grey 5 sts up from the bottom of the body.
5 ch, miss 2 ch, work 1 hdc in each remaining ch. Sl st in body. Fasten off.
To Make Up
Weave in ends. Sew the bottom of the head to the top of the head.
Stitch the head marking to the head.
Attach the nose under the head marking.
Embroider on a mouth.
Sew a bead to each eye.
Stitch an eye to each eye marking.
Attach the eye markings to the head.
Stitch the ears to the head.
Attach the front legs to the head.
Sew the back leg to the body.
Stitch the tail to the body.
Attach the head to the body.
And there’s the finished crochet raccoon. I’ve also made it in different sizes and slightly different colors.
