Welcome to my crochet plane mobile pattern. This week I’ll be showing you how to make the crochet plane, next week I’ll have the teddy bear pilot and the week after I’ll be putting it together as a mobile. The finished patterns will look like this.

Crochet Plane Mobile Pattern 

Abbreviations 

  • st – stitch
  • sts – stitches
  • ch – chain
  • sl st – slip stitch
  • sc – single crochet
  • dc – double crochet
  • tr – treble crochet
  • dtr – double treble crochet

Materials Used

Size

Large plane (Using 8 ply wool)

16cm x 19cm or 6.5” x 7.5”

Fuselage (Work 2 for each plane)

10 ch.

Row 1:  Miss 1st ch and work 1 sc in each st to end.  Turn. (9 sts)

Rows 2-4:  1 ch, 1 sc in each st to last st, 2 sc in last st.  Turn.

Row 5:  1 ch, 1 sc in each st to end.  Turn.  (12 sts)

Row 6:  1 ch, 1 sc in each st to last 3 sts.  Turn.  (9 sts)

Row 7:  1 ch, a joined sc over 1st 2 sts, 1 sc in each st to end.  Turn.  (8 sts)

Row 8:  1 ch, 1 sc in each st to last 2 sts, a joined sc over last 2 sts.  Turn.  (7 sts)

Rows 9-11:  1 ch, 1 sc in each st to end.  Turn. (7 sts)

Row 12:  1 ch, 1 sc in each st to last st, 2 sc in last st.  Turn.  (8 sts)

Row 13:  1 ch, 1 sc in each st to end.  Turn.  (8 sts)

Row 14:  1 ch, 1 sc in each st to last st, 2 sc in last st.  Turn.  (9 sts)

Row 15:  1 ch, 1 sc in each st to end.  Turn.  (9 sts)

Row 16:  1 ch, 1 sc in each st to last st, 2 sc in last st.  Turn. (10 sts)

Row 17:  1 ch, 1 sc in each st to end.  Turn.  (10 sts)

Row 18:  1 ch, 1 sc in each st to last 2 sts, a joined sc over last 2 sts.  Turn.  (9 sts)

Row 19:  1 ch, a joined sc over 1st 2 sts, 1 sc in each st to end.  Turn.  (8 sts)

Row 20:  1 ch, 1 sc in each st to last 2 sts, a joined sc over last 2 sts.  Turn.  (7 sts)

Row 21:  1 ch, a joined sc over 1st 2 sts, 1 sc in each st to end.  Turn.  (6 sts)

Row 22:  1 ch, 1 sc in each st to last 2 sts, a joined sc over last 2 sts.  Turn.  (5 sts)

Row 23:  1 ch, a joined sc over 1st 2 sts, 1 sc in each st to end.  Turn.  (4 sts)

Row 24:  1 ch, 1 sc in each st to end.  Turn. (4 sts)

Row 25:  1 ch, 2 sc in 1st st, 1 sc in each st to end.  Turn.  (5 sts)

Row 26:  1 ch, 1 sc in each st to last st, 2 sc in last st.  4 ch.  Turn.  (6 sts + 4 ch)

Row 27:  Miss 1 ch, 1 sc in each st to end.  Turn.  (9 sts)

Row 28:  1 ch, a joined sc over 1st 2 sts, 1 sc in each st to last st, 2 sc in last st.  Turn.  (9 sts)

Row 29:  1 ch, 2 sc in 1st st, 1 sc in each st to last 2 sts, a joined sc over last 2 sts.  Don’t Fasten off.

Neatening Row

For 1 fuselage of each plane don’t turn before the neatening row.  Turn work and work 1 sc or 2 sc, when needed, in each st around.  Join with a sl st in top of 1st st.  Fasten off.

Wings (Make 4 for each plane)

16 ch.

Row 1:  Miss 1st ch and work 1 sc in each st to end.  Turn.  (15 sts)

Row 2:  1 ch, work 2 sc in 1st st, 1 sc in each st to end.  Turn.  (16 sts)

Row 3:  1 ch, work 1 sc in each st to end.  Turn. (16 sts)

Row 4:  1 ch, work 1 sc in each st to last 2 sts and a joined sc over last 2 sts.  Turn.  (15 sts)

Row 5:  1 ch, work a joined sc over 1st 2 sts, 1 sc in next st, 1 hdc in each of following 2 sts, 1 dc in each of next 3 sts, 1 tr in each st to end.  Don’t fasten off.

Neatening Row

Work 1 sc in each st around.  Join with a sl st in top of 1st st.  Fasten off for 2 wings.  After finishing the other 2 wings, place a wing that is fastened off behind the wing with wrong sides facing and join together with a sl st in each through both wings.  (If your joined wings aren’t stiff you will need to cut a piece of cardboard to place in between the wings before crocheting them together to help them hold their shape.  Fasten off.

Front of Plane

Join cotton to 1st st on front of body section as shown.

1 ch, 1 sc in next st, 1 hdc in following st, 2 dc in next st, 2 tr in each st until you have 4 sts left, 2 dc in next st, 1 hdc in following st, 1 sc in next st, sl st in last st.  Fasten off.

Join same colour yarn 1 st back from centre st.

2 ch, work 1 hdc in each of next 2 sts.  Fasten off.

Propellers

Join cotton in 1st ch as shown.

6 ch.

Work 2 dc in 3rd ch from hook, 1 hdc in each of next 2 sts, 1 sc in last st, sl st into top of front of plane.  Fasten off.

Work the other propeller the same on the other side of the top front section.

Tail Flaps (Make 4 for each plane)

7 ch.

1 sl st in 2nd ch from hook, 1 sc in next st, 1 hdc in following st, 1 dc in next st, 2 tr in following st, 1 dtr in last st.  Don’t fasten off.

Neatening Row

Sl st into each st around.  Fasten off.

Divider

Using the same colour as the fuselage make a magic loop.

Row 1:  1 ch, work 13 hdc into circle.  Pull circle tight and join with a sl st in 1st st.

Row 2:  1 ch, work 1 hdc in same st as ch, 2 hdc in each st to end of row.  Join with a sl st in top of 1st st.  Fasten off.

To Make Up

Weave in ends.   Stitch 2 tail flaps together with wrong sides facing, repeat for other 2 tail flaps.

Sew a tail flap to each of the tails of the fuselages as shown.

With wrong sides together stitch the plane bodies together leaving the cockpit open.

Insert filling into the tail section of the plane to the cockpit and stitch the divider into the back of the cockpit and around the sides and bottom.

Attach the wings to the sides of the plane.
