Welcome to my crochet penguin blanket pattern. This pattern was another request. This is what the finished penguin baby blanket will look like.

Crochet Penguin Baby Blanket

Abbreviations 

  • st – stitch
  • sts – stitches
  • ch – chain
  • sl st – slip stitch
  • sc – single crochet
  • hdc – half double crochet
  • dc – double crochet
  • tr – treble crochet

Materials Used 

  • I used 5 100g balls of light blue, 2 balls of white, 1 ball of each black and orange in 8 ply yarn which is DK yarn.
  • A crochet hook, I used a 4mm hook.
  • A darning needle to weave in ends.
  • Scissors.
  • Black sewing thread and a needle to stitch the eyes to the penguin.
  • White cotton to embroider the dot on the eyes.

Size

76cm across x 94cm long or 27” across x 37” long

I used 18 penguin granny squares and 17 plain squares.

Plain Square (I made 17)

21 ch

Row 1:  Work 1 dc in 3rd ch from hook, (1 sc in next ch, 1 dc in following ch) repeat to end.  Turn. (19 sts)

Row 2:  1 ch, work 1 sc in 1st st, (1 dc in next st, 1 sc in back loop only of following st) repeat until 2 sts left, 1 dc in next st, 1 sc in both loops of last st.  Turn.  (19 sts)

Row 3:  2 ch, work 1 dc in 1st st, (1 sc in back loop only of next st, 1 dc in following st) repeat to end.  Turn. (19 sts)

Rows 4-15:

 

Repeat rows 2 and 3 6 more times.  Don’t Fasten off.

Neatening Row

1 ch, work 1 sc in each st along straight edges (I worked 21 sts along the sides) and 1 sc, 1 ch and 1 sc in each corner st.  Join with a sl st in top of 1st st.  Fasten off.

Join Squares Together

I had 5 squares across and 7 squares down as shown. I sewed my squares together using a whip stitch but you could crochet them together if you prefer.

Edge

Join light blue to any stitch.

Row 1:  1 ch, work 1 sc in each st on straight edges and 3 sc in each corner loop to end of row.  Join with a sl st in top of 1st st.

Row 2:  1 ch, work 1 sc in each st on straight edges and 1 sc, 1 ch and 1 sc in corner sts to end of row.  Join with a sl st in top of 1st st.

Join in white but leave light blue attached.

Rows 3-4:  1 ch, work 1 sc in each st on straight edges and 1 sc, 1 ch and 1 sc in corner sts to end of row.  Join with a sl st in top of 1st st.

 

Fasten off the white and work last 2 rows with the light blue.

Row 5:  1 ch, work 1 sc in each st on straight edges and 1 sc, 1 ch and 1 sc in corner sts to end of row.  Join with a sl st in top of 1st st.

Row 6:  1 ch, work 1 crab stitch (reverse sc) in each st.  Fasten off.

To Make Up

Weave in ends.
