I’ve got this new crochet owl pattern for you today. This is what the owl appliqué is going to look like.

Crochet Owl Pattern
Abbreviations
- st – stitch
- sts – stitches
- ch – chain
- sl st – slip stitch
- sc – single crochet
- hdc – half double crochet
- dc – double crochet
- tr – treble crochet
- dtr – double treble crochet
Materials Used
- A main colour, contrast colour, colour for beak, white and black crochet cotton or wool.
- Crochet hook.
- Scissors.
- Thread to sew together.
- Sewing needle.
- Darning needle to weave in ends.
Head
Make a magic loop.
Row 1: 2 ch, 2 hdc, 3 tr, 6 hdc, 3 tr, 3 hdc into circle. Pull circle tight and join with a sl st in 2nd ch.
Row 2: 2 ch, 1 hdc in next st, 2 hdc in next st, work 2 tr in each of next 3 sts, work 2 hdc in next st, work 1 hdc in each of next 4 sts, 2 hdc in next st, work 2 tr in each of next 3 sts, work 2 hdc in next st, 1 hdc in remaining sts. Sl st in 2nd ch.
Row 3: 3 ch, 1 dc in each of next 4 sts, 2 dc in each of next 5 sts, 1 dc in each of next 8 sts, 2 dc in each of next 5 sts, 1 dc in each st to end. Join with a sl st in the 3rd ch.
Row 4: 3 ch, 1 dc in same place as ch, 1 dc in each of next 2 sts, 2 dc in next st, (1 dc in next st, 2 dc in following st) 6 times, (1 dc in each of next 2 sts, 2 dc in next st) 2 times, (1 dc in next st, 2 dc in following st) 6 times, 1 dc in each of next 2 sts, 2 dc in following st. 1 dc into any remaining sts. Sl st into 3rd ch.
Row 5: 3 ch, 1 dc in same place as ch, (1 dc in each of next 2 sts, 2 dc in next st,) repeat to end of row. Sl st in top of 3 ch. Fasten off.
Ears
Join for ear as in picture below.
Row 1: 2 ch, 1 hdc in each of next 4 sts, 1 joined hdc over same st as last hdc and next st. Turn.
Row 2: 2 ch, 1 joined hdc over 1st 2 sts, 1 hdc, 1 joined hdc over last 2 sts. Turn.
Row 3: 2 ch, hdc cluster over all sts. Fasten off.
Work the 2nd ear the same as the 1st.
To Neaten Head and Ears
Join cotton at base of 1st ear. 1 ch, work 1 sc in each st around the head and ears. Fasten off.
Body
Make a magic loop.
Row 1: 2 ch, 2 hdc, 3 tr, 6 hdc, 3 tr, 3 hdc into circle. Pull circle tight and join with a sl st in 2nd ch.
Row 2: 2 ch, 1 hdc in next st, 2 hdc in next st, work 2 tr in each of next 3 sts, work 2 hdc in next st, work 1 hdc in each of next 4 sts, 2 hdc in next st, work 2 tr in each of next 3 sts, work 2 hdc in next st, 1 hdc in remaining sts. Sl st in 2nd ch.
Row 3: 3 ch, 1 dc in each of next 4 sts, 2 dc in each of next 5 sts, 1 dc in each of next 8 sts, 2 dc in each of next 5 sts, 1 dc in each st to end. Join with a sl st in the 3rd ch.
Row 4: 3 ch, 1 dc in same place as ch, 1 dc in each of next 2 sts, 2 dc in next st, (1 dc in next st, 2 dc in following st) 6 times, (1 dc in each of next 2 sts, 2 dc in next st) 2 times, (1 dc in next st, 2 dc in following st) 6 times, 1 dc in each of next 2 sts, 2 dc in following st. 1 dc into any remaining sts. Sl st into 3rd ch.
Row 5: 3 ch, 1 dc in same place as ch, (1 dc in each of next 2 sts, 2 dc in next st,) repeat to end of row. Sl st in top of 3 ch. Fasten off.
Outside of Eyes (Make 2)
Make a magic loop.
Row 1: 3 ch, work 12 dc into the circle. Pull circle tight and join with a sl st in the 3rd ch.
Row 2: 2 ch, work 1 hdc in same place as ch and then 2 hdc in each st around. Join with a sl st in the 2nd ch. Fasten off.
Eyes (Make 2)
Make a magic loop.
1 ch, 8 sc into circle. Pull the circle tight and join with a sl st. Fasten off.
Beak
Make a magic loop.
Row 1: 3 ch, 2 dc into circle, pull circle tight but don’t join. Turn.
Row 2: 3 ch, a dc cluster over all sts. Fasten off.
Wings (Make 2)
Make a magic loop.
Row 1: 3 ch, 2 dc into circle. Pull circle tight but don’t join. Turn.
Row 2: 3 ch, 1 dc in same place as ch, 1 dc in next st, 1 dc in top of ch. Turn.
Row 3: 3 ch, 2 dc in same place as ch, 1 dc in each of next 2 sts, 1 dc in top of ch. Turn.
Row 4: 3 ch, 1 joined dc over same place as ch and next st, 1 dc in each of next 3 sts, 1 dc in top of ch. Turn.
Row 5: 3 ch, 1 dc in same place as ch, 1 dc in each st to last, 1 joined dc over last st and top of ch. Turn.
Row 6: 3 ch, 1 dc in same place as ch, 1 dc in each st and top of ch. Turn.
Row 7: 3 ch, 1 dc in same place as ch, 1 dc in each st to last 2. 1 joined dc over last 2 sts. Turn.
Row 8: 3 ch, 1 dc cluster over all sts. Don’t fasten off.
To Neaten Edges
1 ch work 1 sc in each st around the wing. Join with a sl st in ch. Fasten off.
For the 2nd wing, after you finish the main part of the wing turn it over and sc in each st around. (This makes the wing slope in the opposite direction).
To Make Up
Weave in ends. Embroider white spot on each eye.
Stitch outside of eyes together on one.
Attach the eyes to the outside of eyes and embroider on eyelashes if desired.
Stitch the eye piece to the head and attach the beak partly over the eye piece as shown.
Join the head to the body and attach the wings.
Crochet on the claws.
Claws
Join cotton to bottom of body 3 stitches off centre.
(3 ch, 1 dc in same place as ch, 3 ch, sl st in same place as dc, sl st in next st) 3 times omitting the sl st in next st on last repeat. Fasten off.
Make another claw to match.

Hello Agnes, I use a 1.25mm hook which is an 8 in US and a 3 in UK and Canada. I use 4 ply crochet cotton which is fairly thin. I hope this is some help. Kerri
I love the pattern but I altered it a bit on mine. To make is less ‘gappy’ I used dc in place of the tc called for. Less holey spaces in the finished project.
