Welcome to my crochet hanging sloth pattern. This is another request that I received. This is what the finished hanging sloth applique will look like.

Crochet Hanging Sloth Pattern
Abbreviations
- st – stitch
- sts – stitches
- ch – chain
- sl st – slip stitch
- dc – double crochet
- htr – half treble crochet
- tr – treble crochet
- dtr – double treble crochet
- ttr – triple treble crochet
Materials Used
- Any thickness crochet cotton or yarn, I used Scheepjes Maxi Sweet Treat colours (179) Topaz, (162) Black Coffee, (105) Bridal White, (110) Black, (115) Hot Red, (606) Grass Green and (404) English Tea.
- A Crochet hook, I used a 1mm hook.
- Sewing thread and needle to stitch the sloth together.
- A darning needle to weave in ends.
Size
Large sloth (Using 8 ply yarn & a 3mm hook)
19cm wide x 17cm high or 7.5” wide x 6.75” high
Medium sloth (Using 4 ply crochet cotton & a 1.5mm hook)
13cm wide x 11 cm high or 5” wide x 4.5” high
Small sloth (Using 2 ply crochet cotton & a 1mm hook)
10cm wide x 7cm high or 4” wide x 2.75” high
Body
Using (179) Topaz work 16 ch.
Row 1: Work 2 dc in 2nd ch from hook, 1 dc in next st, 1 htr in each of following 3 sts, 1 tr in each of next 5 sts, 1 htr in each of following 3 sts, 1 dc in next st, 2 dc in last st. Turn. (17 sts)
Row 2: 1 ch, work 2 dc in 1st st, 1 dc in each st to last st, 2 dc in last st. Turn. (19 sts)
Row 3: 2 ch, work 2 htr in 1st st, 1 dc in each st to last st, 2 htr in last st. Turn. (21 sts)
Row 4: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each st. Turn. (21 sts)
Row 5: 2 ch, work 2 htr in 1st st, 1 dc in each st to last st, 2 htr in last st. Turn. (23 sts)
Rows 6-7: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each st. Turn. (23 sts)
Row 8: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each st to last 2 sts, a joined dc over last 2 sts. Turn. (22 sts)
Row 9: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each st. Turn. (22 sts)
Row 10: 1 ch, work a joined dc over 1st 2 sts, 1 dc in each st to last 2 sts, a joined dc over last 2 sts. Turn. (20 sts)
Head
Row 11: 1 ch, work a joined dc over 1st 2 sts, 1 dc in each of next 5 sts, a joined dc over following 2 sts. Turn. (7 sts)
Row 12: 1 ch, work a joined dc over 1st 2 sts, 1 dc in each of next 3 sts, a joined dc over last 2 sts. Turn. (5 sts)
Row 13: 1 ch, work a joined dc over 1st 2 sts, 3 tr in next st, a joined dc over last 2 sts. Fasten off.
Front Leg
Join (179) Topaz to last stitch worked of row 10 where shown.
Row 1: 1 ch, work a joined dc over same st as join and next st, 1 dc in each of next 4 sts. Turn. (5 sts)
Row 2: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each of 1st 3 sts, a joined dc over last 2 sts. Turn. (4 sts)
Row 3: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each st. Turn. (4 sts)
Row 4: 2 ch, work 1 htr in each of 1st 2 sts, 1 dc in each of last 2 sts. Turn. (4 sts)
Row 5: 1 ch, work a joined dc over 1st 2 sts, 1 dc in each of last 2 sts. Turn. (3 sts)
Row 6: 2 ch, work 1 htr in 1st st, 1 dc in each of last 2 sts. Turn. (3 sts)
Row 7: 1 ch, work 1 dc in 1st st, 1 htr in each of last 2 sts. Turn. (3 sts)
Row 8: 1 ch, work 1 dc in 1st st, a joined htr over last 2 sts. Turn. (2 sts)
Row 9: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each st. Fasten off.
Back Leg
Join (179) Topaz to 4th last stitch of body.
Row 1: 1 ch, work 1 dc in same st as join, 1 dc in each of last 3 sts. Turn. (4 sts)
Row 2: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each st. Turn. (4 sts)
Row 3: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each of 1st 2 sts, 1 htr in each of last 2 sts. Turn. (4 sts)
Row 4: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each of 1st 2 sts, a joined dc over last 2 sts. Turn. (3 sts)
Row 5: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each st. Turn. (3 sts)
Row 6: 1 ch, work a joined dc over 1st 2 sts, 1 dc in last st. Don’t fasten off.
Neatening Row
Turn work before neatening row.
1 ch, work 1 sl st in each st around. Fasten off.
Claws (Make 2)
Join (404) English Tea to 1st st at end of leg.
(2 ch, sl st in next st) 3 times. Fasten off.
Face
Using (105) Bridal White work 6 chain.
Row 1: Work 1 dc in 2nd ch from hook, 1 htr in next st, 1 tr in following st, 1 htr in next st, 1 dc in last st. Turn. (5 sts)
Row 2: 1 ch, work 2 dc in 1st st, 1 dc in each st to last st, 2 dc in last st. Turn. (7 sts)
Row 3: 2 ch, work 1 htr in 1st st, 1 dc in each st to last st, 1 htr in last st. Turn. (7 sts)
1st Side
Row 4: 2 ch, work a joined htr over 1st 3 sts. Fasten off.
2nd Side
Join (105) Bridal White to 3rd last st of row 3.
2 ch, work a joined htr over the same st as join and next 2 sts. Don’t turn or fasten off.
Neatening Row
1 ch, work 1 sl st in each st around. Fasten off.
1st Face Making
Using (162) Black Coffee make a magic loop. (I left long tails at each end to stitch it down.)
Row 1: 2 ch, work 1 htr in circle. Pull circle tight. Turn. (1 st)
Row 2: 1 ch, work 1 dc in 1st st, 1 htr in top of ch. Fasten off.
2nd Face Marking
Using (162) Black Coffee make a magic loop. (I left long tails at each end to stitch it down.)
Row 1: 2 ch, work 1 htr in circle. Pull circle tight. Turn. (1 st)
Row 2: 2 ch, work 1 htr in 1st st, 1 dc in top of ch. Fasten off.
Nose
Using (110) Black make a magic loop. (I left long tails at each end to stitch it down.)
1 ch, work 2 dc in circle. Pull circle tight. Fasten off.
Far Legs (Make 2)
Using (179) Topaz work 3 ch.
Row 1: Miss 1st ch, work 1 dc in each remaining ch. Turn. (2 sts)
Rows 2-3: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each st. Turn. (2 sts)
Row 4: 1 ch, work 2 dc in 1st st, 1 dc in last st. Turn. (3 sts)
Row 5: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each st. Turn. (3 sts)
Row 6: 2 ch, work 2 htr in 1st st, 1 dc in each of last 2 sts. Turn. (4 sts)
Row 7: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each st. Turn. (4 sts)
Row 8: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each st. Don’t turn or fasten off.
Neatening Row
1 ch, work 1 sl st in each st around. Fasten off.
Branch
Using (162) Black Coffee work 42 chain.
Miss 1st ch, work 1 dc in each of next 5 sts, 1 htr in each of following 3 sts, a joined htr over next 3 sts, 1 htr in each of following 4 sts, a joined tr over next 2 sts, 1 tr in each of following 12 sts, 1 dtr in each of next 8 sts, 1 ttr in each st to end. Fasten off.
Join (162) Black Coffee 6 sts down from narrow end.
10 ch.
Miss 1st ch, work 1 sl st in each of next 3 sts, 5 ch, miss 1st ch, 1 sl st in each remaining ch to main branch. Sl st in branch. Fasten off.
Leaves
Using (606) Grass Green make a magic loop.
Row 1: 2 ch, into circle work 2 htr. Pull circle tight. Turn.
Row 2: 2 ch, work a joined htr over the 2 sts. 1 ch, join to branch and fasten off.
Flowers
Using (115) Hot Red make a magic loop.
(3 ch, sl st in circle) 5 times. Fasten off.
To Make Up
Weave in ends. Stitch the face markings to the face.
Attach the nose to the face.
Embroider eyes on the face markings.
Sew the face to the head.
Stitch the flowers to the branch using a bead or a French knot.
Sew the sloth to the branch.
Stitch the far legs to the sloth so they reach behind the branch.
Embroider the claws over the branch for the far legs.
And there’s the finished hanging sloth applique. I’ve also made it in different sizes and colours.
