Welcome to my crochet German boy pattern. This is another request that I received. This is what the finished German boy applique will look like.

Crochet German Boy Pattern
Abbreviations
- st – stitch
- sts – stitches
- ch – chain
- sl st – slip stitch
- sc – single crochet
- hdc – half double crochet
- dc – double crochet
- tr – treble crochet
Materials Used
- Crochet cotton or wool, I used Scheepjes Maxi Sugar Rush or Maxi Sweet Treat 2 ply crochet cotton colors (208) Yellow Gold, (105) Bridal White, (110) Black, (390) Poppy Rose, (254) Moon Rock, (189) Royal Orange, (173) Bluebell and a tiny bit of (106) Snow White.
- A crochet hook, I used a 1mm hook.
- Scissors.
- Darning needle to weave in ends.
- Sewing thread and needle to stitch the boy together and embroider on markings.
Size
Large boy (Using 8 ply yarn & a 3mm hook)
8cm x 19cm or 3” x 7.5”
Medium boy (Using 4 ply crochet cotton & a 1.5mm hook)
5.5cm x 13cm or 2.25” x 5”
Small Boy (Using 2 ply crochet cotton & a 1mm hook)
4cm x 10cm or 1.5” x 4”
Head
Using (105) Bridal White work 4 ch.
Row 1: Work 1 sc in 2nd ch from hook, 1 dc in next st, 1 sc in last st. Turn. (3 sts)
Row 2: 1 ch, work 2 sc in 1st st, 1 sc in next st, 2 sc in last st. Turn. (5 sts)
Row 3: 1 ch, work 2 sc in 1st st, 1 sc in each st to last st, 2 sc in last st. Turn. (7 sts)
Row 4: 2 ch, work 2 hdc in 1st st, 1 sc in each st to last st, 2 hdc in last st. Turn. (9 sts)
Row 5: 1 ch, work 1 sc in each st to end. Turn. (9 sts)
Row 6: 1 ch, work 2 sc in 1st st, 1 sc in each st to last st, 2 sc in last st. Turn. (11 sts)
Rows 7-8: 1 ch, work 1 sc in each st to end. Turn. (11 sts)
Row 9: 1 ch, work a joined sc over 1st 2 sts, 1 sc in each st to last 2 sts, a joined sc over last 2 sts. Turn. (9 sts)
Row 10: 1 ch, work 1 sc in each st to end. Don’t turn or fasten off.
Neatening Row
1 ch, work 1 sc in each around. Join with a sl st in top of 1st st. Fasten off.
Hair
Using (254) Moon Rock work 12 ch
Row 1: Miss 1 ch and work 1 sc in each remaining ch. 7 ch.
Row 2: Miss 1 ch, work 1 sl st in each remaining ch, sl st in 1st st of row 1, (4 ch, miss 1 ch and work 1 sl st in each remaining ch, sl st in next st of row 1) 9 times, 7 ch, miss 1 ch, work 1 sl st in each remaining ch, sl st in last st of row 1. Fasten off.
Hat
Using (208) Yellow Gold Work 6 ch.
Row 1: Work 2 sc in 2nd ch from hook, 1 sc in each ch to last ch, 2 sc in last ch. Turn. (7 sts)
Row 2: 1 ch, work 2 sc in 1st st, 1 sc in each st to last st, 2 sc in last st. Turn. (9 sts)
Row 3: 1 ch, work 2 sc in 1st st, 1 sc in each st to last st, 2 sc in last st. Turn. (11 sts)
Join in (189) Royal Orange but leave the Yellow Gold attached for the neatening row. I left a long tail at the beginning of the Royal Orange and crocheted over the top of it to take it to the other side for the neatening row.
Row 4: 1 ch, work 2 sc in 1st st, 1 sc in each st to last st, 2 sc in last st. Turn. (13 sts)
Row 5: 1 ch, work 2 sc in 1st st, 1 sc in each st to last st, 2 sc in last st. Turn. (15 sts)
Join in (390) Poppy Rose but leave the Royal Orange attached for the neatening row.
Row 6: 1 ch, work 3 sc in 1st st, 1 sc in each st to last st, 3 sc in last st. Fasten off but don’t cut Poppy Rose as you’ll use it for the neatening row.
Neatening Row
Using the attached cotton in the colors of the hat work 1 sl st in each st around. Fasten off.
Shorts
Using (390) Poppy Rose work 8 ch.
Row 1: Miss 1 ch, work 1 sc in each remaining ch. Turn. (7 sts)
Row 2: 1 ch, work 1 sc in each st. Turn. (7 sts)
1st Leg
Row 3: 1 ch, work 1 sc in each of 1st 3 sts. Turn. (3 sts)
Row 4: 1 ch, work 1 sc in each st. Turn. (3 sts)
Row 5: 1 ch, work 1 sc in each st. Fasten off.
2nd Leg
Join (390) Poppy Rose to 3rd last st where shown.
Row 1: 1 ch, work 1 sc in same st as ch, 1 sc in each remaining st. Turn. (3 sts)
Row 2: 1 ch, work 1 sc in each st. Turn. (3 sts)
Row 3: 1 ch, work 1 sc in each st. Don’t fasten off.
Neatening Row
Work 1 sl st in each st around. Fasten off.
1st Strap
Join (390) Poppy Rose to 2nd st along top.
15 ch.
Miss 1st ch, work 1 sc in each remaining ch, sl st in next st along top. Fasten off.
2nd Strap
Join (390) Poppy Rose to 3rd last st along top.
15 ch.
Miss 1st ch, work 1 sc in each remaining ch, sl st in next st along top. Fasten off.
Middle Piece
Join (390) Poppy Rose 4 sts up from top of shorts on the inside of the strap on wrong side.
Work 3 ch. Join to inside of the other strap across from the other join. Sl st in next st up the side of strap. Turn work over. Work 1 sc in each of the 3 ch. Sl st in the side of strap. Fasten off.
Legs (Make 2)
Using (105) Bridal White work 3 ch.
Row 1: Miss 1st ch, work 1 sc in each remaining ch. Turn. (2 sts)
Rows 2-5: 1 ch, work 1 sc in each st. Turn. (2 sts)
Join in (173) Bluebell but don’t fasten off the Bridal White. I left a long tail at beginning of the Bluebell for the neatening row and crocheted over the top of it to take it to the other side.
Rows 6-9: 1 ch, work 1 sc in each st. Turn. (2 sts)
Row 10: 1 ch, work 1 sc in each st. Fasten off.
Neatening Row
Using the same color cotton as the piece work 1 sl st in each st around. Fasten off.
Shoes (Make 2)
Using (110) Black work 4 ch.
Work 1 sc in 2nd ch from hook, 2 hdc in next st, 1 sc in last st. Fasten off.
Eyes (Make 2)
Using (110) Black make a magic loop.
1 ch, work 2 sc in circle. Pull circle tight and join with a sl st in top of ch. Fasten off leaving a long tail to stitch above white of eye.
Join (106) Snow white the st after the join for 1 eye and 2 sts before the join for the other eye.
1 ch, work a joined sc, dc and sc over the same st as ch and next st. Fasten off.
Shirt
Using (173) Bluebell work 6 ch.
Row 1: Miss 1st ch, work 1 sc in each remaining ch. Turn. (5 sts)
Rows 2-9: 1 ch, work 1 sc in each st. Turn (5 sts)
1st Side
Row 10: 1 ch, work 1 sc in each of 1st 2 sts. Turn. (2 sts)
Row 11: 1 ch, work 1 sc in each st. Turn. (2 sts)
Row 12: Sl st into 2nd st, 1 ch, work 1 sc in same st as ch. Turn. (1 st)
Row 13: 1 ch, work 1 sc in st. Fasten off.
2nd Side
Join (173) Bluebell to 2nd last st.
Row 1: 1 ch, work 1 sc in same st as ch, 1 sc in next st. Turn. (2 sts)
Row 2: 1 ch, work 1 sc in each st. Turn. (2 sts)
Row 3: 1 ch, work 1 sc in 1st st. Turn. (1 st)
Row 4: 1 ch, work 1 sc in st. Don’t fasten off.
Neatening Row
Turn work before neatening row.
Work 1 sl st in each st down to after the armhole, 1 sc in each st around to next armhole, 1 sl st in each st to top. Fasten off.
Collar
Join (390) Poppy Rose to top of shirt where shown.
Work 1 sl st in each st around the neck. Fasten off.
1st Sleeve
Join (173) Bluebell 2 sts down from top where shown.
13 ch.
Miss 1st ch, work 1 sc in each of next 2 sts, 1 hdc in each of following 3 sts, a joined dc over next 2 sts, a joined tr over following 4 sts. Join to shirt where shown. Fasten off.
2nd Sleeve
Join (173) Bluebell where shown.
8 ch.
Miss 1st ch, work 1 sc in each of next 2 sts, 1 hdc in each of following 3 sts, 2 dc in next st, 4 tr in last st. Join to shirt 2 sts down from top with a sl st. Fasten off.
Hands (Make 2)
Join (205) Bridal White to end of sleeve.
2 ch. Work 1 hdc in same place as ch. Fasten off.
Neck
Using (105) Bridal White work 6 ch.
Row 1: Miss 1st ch, work 1 sc in each remaining ch. Turn. (5 sts)
Rows 2-5: 1 ch, work 1 sc in each st. Turn. (5 sts)
Row 6: 1 ch, work a joined sc over 1st 2 sts, 1 sc in next st, a joined sc over last 2 sts. Turn. (3 sts)
Row 7: 1 ch, work a joined sc over 1st 2 sts and a joined sc over last 2 sts. Turn. (2 sts)
Rows 8-9: 1 ch, work 1 sc in each st. Turn. (2 sts)
Row 10: 1 ch, work 1 sc in each st. Don’t fasten off.
Neatening Row
Work 1 sl st in each st around. Fasten off.
To Make Up
Weave in ends. Sew the hair to the head.
Embroider a white dot in middle of each eye.
Stitch the eyes to the head and stitch the black cotton around the top part of the white.
Embroider a nose and mouth on the head.
Attach the hat to the head.
Sew the shoes to the bottom of the legs.
Embroider markings to the shorts.
Stitch the legs in behind the shorts.
Attach the shorts to the shirt.
Stitch the neck in behind the shirt.
Attach the head to the body.
