Welcome to my crochet fire engine pattern. This pattern was another request. This is what the finished fire engine applique will look like.

Crochet Fire Engine Pattern
Abbreviations
- st – stitch
- sts – stitches
- ch – chain
- sl st – slip stitch
- sc – single crochet
- hdc – half double crochet
- dc – double crochet
Materials Used
- Any thickness crochet cotton or yarn, I used Scheepjes Maxi Sweet Treat 2 ply crochet cotton colors (390) Poppy Rose, (192) Scarlet, (106) Snow White, (110) Black, (074) Mercury, (242) Metal Gray, (509) Baby Blue and (208) Yellow Gold.
- A crochet hook, I used a 1mm hook.
- A darning needle to weave in ends.
- Scissors.
- Sewing thread and a needle to stitch the fire engine together.
Size
Large fire engine (Using 8 ply yarn & a 3mm hook)
19cm wide x 15cm high or 7.5” wide x 6” high
Medium fire engine (Using 4 ply crochet cotton & a 1.5mm hook)
13.5cm wide x 9.5cm high or 5.25” wide x 3.75” high
Small fire engine (Using 2 ply crochet cotton & a 1mm hook)
10cm wide x 7.5cm high or 4” wide x 3” high
Cab
Using (390) Poppy Rose work 16 ch.
Row 1: Miss 1st ch, work 1 sc in each ch to end. Turn. (15 sts)
Rows 2-4: 1 ch, work 1 sc in each st. Turn. (15 sts)
Row 5: 1 ch, work 1 sc in each of 1st 14 sts. Turn. (14 sts)
Rows 6-8: 1 ch, work 1 sc in each st. Turn. (14 sts)
Row 9: 1 ch, work 1 sc in each of 1st 12 sts.
Row 10: 15 ch, sl st in 4th last st of row 9, turn and sl st in last 6 ch, 9 ch, miss 2 sts along row 9, sl st in next st, turn and sl st in last 6 ch, 11 ch, sl st in 1st st of row 9. Don’t turn or fasten off.
Neatening Row
1 ch, work 1 sc in each st on straight edges and 2 sc in corner sts, join with a sl st in top of 1st st. Fasten off.
Step
Join (192) Scarlet to bottom corner stitch where shown.
2 ch, work 2 hdc in same st as join, 1 hdc in each st to last st along the bottom, 2 hdc in last st, 2 ch, sl st in last st. Fasten off.
Back Section
Using (390) Poppy Rose work 19 ch.
Row 1: Miss 1st ch, work 1 sc in each ch to end. Turn. (18 sts)
Rows 2-15: 1 ch, work 1 sc in each st. Turn. (18 sts)
Row 16: 1 ch, work 1 sc in each st. Don’t turn or fasten off.
Neatening Row
1 ch, work 1 sc in each st on straight edges and 2 sc in corner sts, join with a sl st in top of 1st st. Fasten off.
Step
Join (192) Scarlet to bottom corner stitch where shown.
2 ch, work 2 hdc in same st as join, 1 hdc in each st to last st along the bottom, 2 hdc in last st, 2 ch, sl st in last st. Fasten off.
Wheels (Make 2)
Using (074) Mercury make a magic loop.
Row 1: 1 ch, work 6 sc in the circle, pull the circle tight and join with a sl st in top of 1st st. Fasten off.
Join (106) Snow White to the front loop only of any stitch.
Row 2: Work 1 sl st in front loop only of each st. Fasten off.
Join (242) Metal Gray to back loop only of any st of row 1.
Row 3. 2 ch, work 2 dc in back loop only of each st of row 1, join with a sl st to top of 1st st. Fasten off.
Join (106) Snow White to the front loop only of any stitch of row 3.
Row 4: Work 1 sl st in front loop only of each st. Fasten off.
Join (110) Black to back loop only of any st of row 3.
Row 5: 1 ch, work 2 hdc in back loop only of each st of row 3, join with a sl st to top of 1st st. Fasten off.
Mudguard
Join (192) Scarlet to any stitch.
2 ch, work 2 hdc in same st as join, (1 hdc in next st, 2 hdc in following st) 4 times, 2 ch, sl st in same st as the last hdc. Fasten off.
Small Ladder
Using (106) Snow White work 20 ch.
Miss 1st ch, work 1 sl st in each of next 2 ch, 5 ch, miss 1st ch, work 1 sl st in each of next 2 ch, 1 ch, (miss next of original ch, 1 dc in following ch, 1 ch) repeat until there is 1 original ch left, work 1 ch. Fasten off.
Strip
Using (106) Snow White work 36 ch.
Miss 1 ch, work 1 hdc in each remaining ch. Fasten off.
Window
Using (509) Baby Blue work 13 ch.
Row 1: Miss 1st ch, work 1 sc in each remaining ch. Turn. (12 sts)
Row 2: 1 ch, work a joined sc over 1st 2 sts, 1 sc in each st to end. Turn. (11 sts)
Row 3: 1 ch, work 1 sc in each st to end. Turn. (11 sts)
Row 4: 1 ch, work a joined sc over 1st 2 sts, 1 sc in each st to end. Turn. (10 sts)
Row 5: 1 ch, work 1 sc in each st to end. Turn. (10 sts)
Row 6: 1 ch, work a joined sc over 1st 2 sts, 1 sc in each st to end. Don’t turn or fasten off.
Neatening Row
Work 1 sl st in each st around. Fasten off.
Light
Using (509) Baby Blue make a magic loop.
1 ch, work 3 hdc and 1 sc in circle. Pull the circle tight and fasten off.
Joining
Join (242) Metal Gray 2 stitches from the top of the cab where shown.
3 ch, work 1 dc in each st to 2nd last st down the side. Fasten off leaving a long tail to stitch it to the back section.
Siren
Join (110) Black to stitch above the back of 1st window.
1 ch, work 1 sl st in same st as join, 1 sl st in each of next 2 sts. Fasten off.
Join (208) Yellow Gold to 1st st of black section.
1 ch, work 2 sc in next st, sl st in last st. Fasten off.
Large Ladder
Using (074) Mercury work 28 ch.
Miss 1st ch, work 1 sc in each remaining ch. sl st in back loop of the last ch, 30 ch, miss 1st ch, work 1 sc in each of next 21 ch, a joined sc over following 3 ch, 1 sc in each remaining ch, sl st in back loop of 2nd last of original ch. Fasten off.
Rungs
Join (074) Mercury to 4th st where shown.
4 ch, sl st into 4th last st on the other side of the ladder, work 1 sc in each ch, sl st in same st as join in the side of the ladder. Fasten off.
Make another rung the same just after the bend and then 2 rungs evenly between the 1st 2 rungs.
Ladder Support
Using (242) Metal Gray work enough chain to zig zag across the rungs. (I worked 26 chain for this 1). Fasten off leaving a long tail at each end to stitch it down.
Hose
Using (110) Black work 12 ch.
Miss 1st ch, work 1 sl st in each of next 3 sts. Fasten off leaving a long tail at each end to stitch it down.
Doors (Make 2)
Using (192) Scarlet work 6 ch.
Row 1: Miss 1st ch, work 1 sc in each remaining ch. Turn. (5 sts)
Row 2: 1 ch, work 1 sc in each st. Don’t turn or fasten off.
Neatening Row
1 ch, work 1 sc in each st on straight edges and 2 sc in corner sts. Join with a sl st in the top of 1st st. Fasten off.
Knobs (Make 2)
Using (074) Mercury make a magic loop.
! ch, work 5 sc in circle. Pull the circle tight and join with a sl st in top of 1st st. Fasten off.
To Make Up
Weave in ends. Stitch the window in behind the window spaces.
Embroider door handles under the windows.
Sew the light to the front of the cab.
Join the joining part to the back section.
Attach a wheel to the cab and a wheel to the back section.
Stitch the strip across the back section and cab just above the wheels.
Sew the small ladder near the top back of the back section.
Stitch the doors to the back section.
Embroider a yellow dot in the centre of each knob.
Sew the knobs to the back section.
Stitch the hose to the back section.
Embroider markings to the hose.
Attach the ladder support between the rungs.
Stitch the large ladder to the roof.
And there’s the finished fire engine applique. I’ve also made it in different sizes.
