Welcome to my crochet elephant granny square pattern. This pattern was a request. This is what the finished elephant granny square will look like.

Crochet Elephant Granny Square Pattern
Abbreviations
- st – stitch
- sts – stitches
- ch – chain
- sl st – slip stitch
- dc – double crochet
- htr – half treble crochet
- tr – treble crochet
Materials Used
- Any thickness crochet cotton or yarn, I used 8 ply yarn which is light worsted in the US and DK in the UK in colours green, grey and white.
- A crochet hook, I used a 4.5mm hook.
- A darning needle to weave in ends.
- Scissors.
- Sewing thread and a needle to stitch the elephant together.
- Black cotton to embroider on the eyes and the markings on the trunk.
Circle Centre
Using the grey, make a magic loop.
Row 1: 2 ch, work 12 tr into the circle and pull the circle tight. Join with a sl st in top of 1st st. (12 sts)
Row 2: 2 ch, work 2 tr in each st. Join with a sl st in top of 1st st. (24 sts)
Row 3: 2 ch, work 1 tr in same st as ch, 1 tr in next st, 2 tr in following st, (1 tr in each of next 2 sts, 2 tr in following st) repeat to end of row. Join with a sl st in top of 1st st. (32 sts) Fasten off.
Granny Square Edge
Join green to any stitch of the circle.
We work into the back loop only for 5 stitches 2 times on row 4 so we can work the ears in the front loop.
Row 4: 3 ch, work 1 tr in same st as ch, 1 htr in each of next 2 sts, 1 dc in each of following 3 sts, 1 htr in each of next 2 sts, into next st work 2 tr, 2 ch, 2 tr, 1 htr in each of next 2 sts, 1 dc in following st, 1 dc in back loop only of each of next 2 sts, 1 htr in back loop only of each of following 2 sts, into back loop only of next st work 2 tr, 2 ch and 2 tr, 1 htr in each of following 2 sts, 1 dc in each of next 3 sts, 1 htr in each of following 2 sts, into the back loop only of next st work 2 tr, 2 ch and 2 tr, 1 htr in back loop only of each of following 2 sts. 1 dc in back loop only of each of next 2 sts, 1 dc in both loops of following st, 1 htr in each of next 2 sts, 2 tr in same st as 1st st, 1 ch, work 1 dc in the top of the 3 ch.
Row 5: 3 ch, work 1 tr in the loop next to ch, 1 tr in join, work 1 tr in each st along sides and 2 tr, 2 ch and 2 tr in each corner loop to the last corner. Into the last corner, work 2 tr, 1 ch and 1 dc in the top of the 3 ch.
Row 6: 3 ch, work 1 tr in the loop next to ch, 1 tr in join, work 1 tr in each st along sides and 2 tr, 2 ch and 2 tr in each corner loop to the last corner. Into the last corner, work 2 tr, 2 ch and sl st in the top of the 3 ch. Fasten off.
Ears (Make 2)
Join grey yarn to the 1st front loop left on the grey section. I left a long tail of about a metre to use for the neatening row.
Row 1: 1 ch, work 1 dc in same st as join, 1 htr in next st, 3 tr in following st, 1 htr in next st, 1 dc in last front loop left. Turn.
Row 2: 1 ch, work 1 dc in 1st st, 2 htr in each st to last st, 1 dc in last st. Fasten off.
Neatening Row
Using the long tail left from the beginning of the ear, work 1 dc in each st around the ear. Fasten off.
Trunk
Using grey work 6 ch.
Row 1: Miss 1st ch and work 1 dc in each st to end. Turn.
Row 2: 1 ch, work a joined dc over 1st 2 sts, 1 dc in next st, a joined dc over last 2 sts. Turn.
Row 3: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each st to end. Turn.
Row 4: 1 ch, work 1 dc in 1st st, a joined dc over last 2 sts. Turn.
Row 5: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each st to end. Turn.
Row 6: 1 ch, work a joined dc over the 2 sts. 6 ch.
Row 7: Miss 1st ch and work 1 dc in each remaining ch, sl st in top of dc from the previous row. Don’t fasten off.
Neatening Row
Work 1 sl st in each st around sides and end (to make the trunk bend to either side, work a joined sl st over 2 sts near the bend) into the tip of the trunk work 3 ch, sl st into the middle of the tip, 3 ch and sl st into the side of the tip. Fasten off.
1st Tusk
Using white work 5 ch.
Work 1 sl st in 2nd ch from hook, 1 dc in each of next 2 sts, 1 htr in last st. Fasten off.
2nd Tusk
Using white work 6 ch.
Work 1 htr in 3rd ch from hook, 1 dc in each of next 2 sts, 1 sl st in last st. Fasten off.
To Make Up
Weave in ends. Embroider markings on the trunk.
Stitch the trunk to the head, just covering the centre circle.
Embroider the eyes on the head.
Sew the tusks to the head.
