Welcome to my crochet deer or fawn pattern. This is another request that I received. This is what the finished deer applique will look like.

Crochet Deer or Fawn Pattern
Abbreviations
- st – stitch
- sts – stitches
- ch – chain
- sl st – slip stitch
- dc – double crochet
- htr – half treble crochet
- tr – treble crochet
- dtr – double treble crochet
Materials Used
- Crochet cotton or wool, I used Scheepjes Maxi Sweet Treat or Maxi Sugar Rush 2 ply crochet cotton colours (383) Ginger Gold, (404) English tea, (106) Snow White and (110) Black.
- A crochet hook, I used a 1mm hook.
- Scissors.
- Darning needle to weave in ends.
- Sewing thread and needle to stitch the deer together.
Size
Large deer (Using 8 ply crochet cotton & a 3mm hook)
12cm x 21cm or 4.75” x 8.5”
Medium deer (Using 4 ply crochet cotton & a 1.5mm hook)
8cm x 12.5cm or 3.25” x 5”
Small deer (Using 2 ply crochet cotton & a 1mm hook)
7cm x 11.5cm or 2.75” x 4.5”
Head
Using (383) Ginger Gold work 4 ch.
Row 1: Work 1 dc in 2nd ch from hook, 1 tr in next st, 1 dc in last st. Turn. (3 sts)
Row 2: 1 ch, work 3 dc in 1st st, 1 dc in next st, 3 dc in last st. Turn. (7 sts)
Row 3: 1 ch, work 2 dc in 1st st, 1 dc in each st to last st, 2 htr in last st. Turn. (9 sts)
Row 4: 2 ch, work 2 htr in 1st st, 1 dc in each st to last st, 2 dc in last st. 3 ch (11 sts + 3 ch)
Row 5: Miss 1 ch, work 1 dc in each st to end. Turn. (13 sts)
Row 6: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each st to end. Turn. (13 sts)
Row 7: 1 ch, work a joined dc over 1st 2 sts, 1 dc in each st to last 2 sts, a joined dc over last 2 sts. Turn. (11 sts)
Row 8: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each st to last 2 sts, a joined dc over last 2 sts. Turn. (10 sts)
Row 9: 1 ch, work a joined dc over 1st 3 sts, 1 dc in each st to last 2 sts, a joined dc over last 2 sts. Turn. (7 sts)
Row 10: 1 ch work 1 dc in each st to last 2 sts, a joined dc over last 2 sts. Turn. (6 sts)
Row 11: 1 ch, work a joined dc over 1st 3 sts, 1 dc in next st, a joined dc over last 2 sts. Don’t turn or fasten off.
Neatening Row
1 ch, work dc around the head, join with a sl st in 1st st. Fasten off.
Nose
Join (110) Black where shown.
1 ch, work a joined htr over same st as ch and next st, 1 ch, sl st in same st as last part of joined htr. Fasten off.
Inner Ear
Using (404) English Tea work 6 ch.
Work a sl st in 2nd ch from hook, 1 dc in next st, 1 htr in following st, 1 dc in next st and sl st in last st. Fasten off.
Outer Ear
Join (383) Ginger Gold to a side st.
1 ch, work 1 dc in each st along sides, 1 dc, 3 ch and 1 dc in each corner st. Join with a sl st in top of 1st st. Fasten off.
Outer Eye
Using (106) Snow White work 3 ch.
Work 1 dc, 1 htr and 1 tr in 2nd ch from hook, 1 tr, 1 htr and 1 sl st in last st. Fasten off.
Inner Eye
Using (110) Black make a magic loop. I leave longer ends and use them to stitch the inner eye to the outer eye.
1 ch, into circle work 1 dc and 1 tr. Pull circle tight and fasten off.
Body
Using (383) Ginger Gold work 4 ch.
Row 1: Miss 1 ch and work 1 dc in each remaining ch. Turn. (3 sts)
Row 2: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each st to end. Turn. (3 sts)
Row 3: 1 ch, work a joined dc over 1st 2 sts, 1 dc in last st. Turn. (2 sts)
Row 4: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each st. Turn. (2 sts)
Row 5: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each st. Turn. (2 sts)
Row 6: 1 ch, work 2 dc in 1st st, 1 dc in last st. Turn. (3 sts)
Row 7: 1 ch, work 2 dc in 1st st, 1 dc in next st, 2 dc in last st. 11 ch. (5 sts + 11 ch)
Row 8: Work 2 dc in 2nd ch from hook, 1 dc in each st to end. Turn. (16 sts)
Row 9: 1 ch, work 2 dc in 1st st, 1 dc in each st to last st, 2 dc in last st. Turn. (18 sts)
Row 10: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each st to end. Turn. (18 sts)
Row 11: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each st to last st, 2 dc in last st. Turn. (19 sts)
Row 12: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each st to end. Turn. (19 sts)
Row 13: 1 ch, work 2 dc in 1st st, 1 dc in each st to end. Turn. (20 sts)
Row 14: 1 ch, work a joined dc over 1st 2 sts, 1 dc in each st to end. Turn. (19 sts)
Row 15: 1 ch, work 2 dc in 1st st, 1 dc in each st to end. Turn. (20 sts)
Row 16: 1 ch, work a joined dc over 1st 2 sts, 1 dc in each st to last 2 sts, a joined dc over last 2 sts. Turn. (18 sts)
Row 17: 1 ch, work a joined dc over 1st 2 sts, 1 dc in each st to last 2 sts, a joined dc over last 2 sts. Turn. (16 sts)
Back Leg
Row 18: 1 ch, work a joined dc over 1st 2 sts, 1 dc in next st, a joined dc over following 2 sts. Turn. (3 sts)
Row 19: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each st. Turn. (3 sts)
Row 20: 1 ch, work 2 dc in 1st st, a joined dc over last 2 sts. Turn. (3 sts)
Row 21: 1 ch, work a joined dc over 1st 2 sts, 2 dc in last st. Turn. (3 sts)
Row 22: 1 ch, work 2 dc in 1st st, a joined dc over last 2 sts. Turn. (3 sts)
Row 23: 1 ch, work a joined dc over 1st 2 sts, 1 htr in last st. Turn. (2 sts)
Row 24: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each st. Turn. (2 sts)
Row 25: 1 ch, work 1 dc in 1st st, 1 htr in last st. Turn. (2 sts)
Row 26: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each st. Turn. (2 sts)
Row 27: 1 ch, work 1 dc in 1st st, 1 htr in last st. Turn. (2 sts)
Row 28: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each st. Turn. (2 sts)
Row 29: 1 ch, work 2 dc in each st. Turn. (4 sts)
Row 30: 1 ch, work a joined dc over 1st 2 sts and a joined dc over last 2 sts. Fasten off.
Front Leg
Join (383) Ginger Gold to 6th last st on body as shown.
Row 1: 1 ch, work a joined dc over next 2 sts, 1 dc in following st, a joined dc over last 2 sts. Turn. (3 sts)
Row 2: 1 ch, work a joined dc over 1st 2 sts, 1 dc in last st. Turn. (2 sts)
Rows 3-5: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each st. Turn. (2 sts)
Row 6: 1 ch, work 2 dc in 1st st, 1 dc in last st. Turn. (3 sts)
Rows 7-9: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each st. Turn. (3 sts)
Row 10: 1 ch, work a joined dc over 1st 2 sts, 1 dc in last st. Turn. (2 sts)
Row 11: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each st. Turn. (2 sts)
Row 12: 2 ch, work 1 htr in 1st st, 2 dc in last st. Turn. (3 sts)
Row 13: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each st. Turn. (3 sts)
Row 14: 1 ch, work a joined dc over all 3 sts. Don’t fasten off or turn.
Neatening Row
Work 1 sl st in each st down leg to tummy, 1 dc in 1st 2 sts on tummy, 1 htr in following st, 1 tr in next st, 1 htr in following st, 1 dc in next st, 1 sl st in each st around back leg, 1 dc in each st to 3 sts before back, work 7 ch for the tail, 1 dc in 2nd ch from hook, a joined htr over next 2 ch, 1 htr in following st, 1 tr in each of next 2 sts, sl st into body, 1 dc in each of next 2 sts, work 2 htr in following st, 1 htr in next st, 1 dc in each st to front leg, 1 sl st in each st to beginning of row. Fasten off.
Back of Tail
Join (404) English Tea to bottom st at back of tail
3 ch, work 1 htr in back loop of next 2 sts, of tail, 1 dc in following st, 1 sl st in next st and 1 sl st in point. Fasten off.
Far Front and Back Legs (Make 2)
Using (383) Ginger Gold work 3 ch.
Row 1: Miss 1 ch and work 1 dc in each st. Turn. (2 sts)
Rows 2-10: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each st. Turn. (2 sts)
Row 11: 2 ch, work 1 htr in 1st st, 1 dc in last st. Turn. (2 sts)
Row 12: 1 ch, work 1 dc in 1st st, 1 htr in last st. Turn. (2 sts)
Row 13: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each st. Turn. (2 sts)
Row 14: 1 ch, work 2 dc in each st. Turn. (4 sts)
Row 15: 1 ch, work a joined dc over 1st 2 sts, a joined dc over last 2 sts. Don’t fasten off.
Neatening Row
Turn leg before neatening row.
Work 1 sl st in each st around. Fasten off.
Hooves
Work a hoof at the end of each leg.
Join (110) Black to 1st st at end of leg.
1 ch, work 2 dc in same st as ch, 2 dc in next st, 1 ch, sl st in same st as last dc. Fasten off.
Spots (Work about 5 if desired)
Using (404) English Tea make a magic loop.
1 ch, work 3 dc in circle. Pull circle tight and join with a sl st in top of 1st st. Fasten off.
Antlers (Make 2 if desired)
Using (404) English Tea work 9 ch.
Miss 1 ch and work 1 dc in each of next 4 ch, 6 ch, miss 1 ch, 1 dc in each of next 3 ch, 3 ch, miss 1 ch, 1 dc in each of next 2 ch, in side of dc and next 2 ch, 5 ch, miss 1 ch, 1 dc in each st to end. Fasten off.
To Make Up
Weave in ends. Attach inner eye to outer eye.
Stitch the eye to the head.
Embroider on eyelashes and eyebrow.
Embroider on a mouth.
Attach the head to the body about 2 rows up from back as shown.
Crochet on the blaze.
Blaze
Join (404) English Tea to head 2 sts up from neck as shown.
Work 1 sl st in next st on neck, 1 dc in 1st st on body, 2 htr in each of next 2 sts, 1 htr in following st, 2 htr in next st, 1 htr in following st, 1 dc in each of next 2 sts, 1 sl st in each of following 2 sts. Fasten off.
Sew the far legs to the body.
Stitch the ear to the head.
Attach the antlers to the head.
Sew the spots to the back.
And there’s the finished deer applique.
