Welcome to my crochet crane pattern. This is another request that I received. This is what the finished crane applique will look like.

Crochet Crane Pattern
Abbreviations
- st – stitch
- sts – stitches
- ch – chain
- sl st – slip stitch
- dc – double crochet
- htr – half treble crochet
- tr – treble crochet
Materials Used
- Any thickness crochet cotton or yarn, I used Scheepjes Maxi Sugar Rush colours (208) Yellow Gold, (110) Black and (393) Charcoal.
- A crochet hook, I used a 1mm hook.
- A darning needle to weave in ends.
- Scissors.
- Sewing thread and a needle to stitch the crane together.
Size
Large crane (Using 8 ply yarn & a 3mm hook)
18cm wide x 13cm high or 7” wide x 5” high
Medium crane (Using 4 ply crochet cotton & a 1.5mm hook)
12.5cm wide x 10cm high or 5” wide x 3.75” high
Small crane (Using 2 ply crochet cotton & a 1mm hook)
9cm wide x 7.5cm high or 3.5” wide x 3” high
Track
Using (208) Yellow Gold work 18 ch.
Row 1: Work 2 dc in 2nd ch from hook, 1 dc in each ch to last ch, 2 dc in last ch. Turn. (19 sts)
Row 2: 1 ch, work 2 dc in 1st st, 1 dc in each st to last st, 2 dc in last st. Turn. (21 sts)
Row 3: 2 ch, work 2 htr in 1st st, 1 dc in each st to last st, 2 htr in last st. Turn. (23 sts)
Row 4: 1 ch, work a joined dc over 1st 2 sts, 1 dc in each st to last 2 sts, a joined dc over last 2 sts. Turn. (21 sts)
Row 5: 1 ch, work a joined dc over 1st 2 sts, 1 dc in each st to last 2 sts, a joined dc over last 2 sts. Fasten off. (19 sts)
Neatening Row
Join (110) Black to any st.
Work 1 dc in each st around. Join with a sl st in 1st st. Fasten off.
Large Circles (Make 2)
Using (110) Black make a magic loop.
1 ch, work 6 dc in circle. Pull circle tight and join with a sl st in top of 1st st. Fasten off.
Small Circles (Make 2)
Using (110) Black make a magic loop.
1 ch, work 2 dc in circle. Pull circle tight and join with a sl st in top of 1st st. Fasten off.
Turntable
Using (208) Yellow Gold work 10 ch.
Row 1: Miss 1st ch, work 1 dc in each st to end. Turn. (9 sts)
Rows 2-5: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each st. Turn. (9 sts)
Row 6: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each st. Don’t turn or fasten off.
Neatening Row
1 ch, work 1 dc in each st along sides and 2 dc in each corner st. Fasten off.
Cabin
Using (110) Black work 17 ch.
Row 1: Miss 1st ch, work 1 dc in each st to end. (16 sts). Fasten off.
Join (208) Yellow Gold to 1st st.
Row 2: 1 ch, work a joined dc over same st as join and next st, 1 dc in each st to end. Turn. (15 sts)
Row 3: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each st to last 2 sts, a joined dc over last 2 sts. Turn. (14 sts)
Row 4: 1 ch, work a joined dc over 1st 2 sts, 1 dc in each st to end. Turn. (13 sts)
Row 5: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each st to last 2 sts, a joined dc over last 2 sts. Turn. (12 sts)
Row 6: 1 ch, work a joined dc over 1st 2 sts, 1 dc in each of next 5 sts. Turn. (6 sts)
Row 7: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each st to last 2 sts, a joined dc over last 2 sts. Turn. (5 sts)
Row 8: 1 ch, work a joined dc over 1st 2 sts, 1 dc in each st to end. Fasten off.
Neatening Row
Join (208) Yellow Gold to 1st st of yellow.
Work 1 dc in each st on straight sections of yellow and 2 dc in corner sts, sl st in last yellow st. Fasten off.
Window
Using (110) Black work 6 ch.
Row 1: Miss 1st ch, work 1 dc in each st to last 2 sts, a joined dc over last 2 sts. Turn. (4 sts)
Row 2: 1 ch, work a joined dc over 1st 2 sts, 1 dc in each st to end. Don’t turn or fasten off.
Neatening Row
1 ch, work 1 sl st in each st around. Fasten off.
Counterweight
Using (208) Yellow Gold work 4 ch.
Row 1: Work 1 dc in 2nd ch from hook, 1 tr in next st, 1 dc in last st. Turn. (3 sts)
Rows 2-3: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each st. Turn. (3 sts)
Row 4: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each st. Don’t turn or fasten off.
Neatening Row
Work 1 sl st in each st around. Fasten off.
Counterweight Bar
Using (110) Black work 6 ch.
Miss 1st ch, work 1 dc in each remaining ch. Fasten off.
Large Boom 1st Side
Using (110) Black work 6 ch, 1 sl st in 2nd last ch, 22 ch. Fasten off.
Large Boom 2nd Side
Using (110) Black work 25 ch, 1 sl st in 2nd last ch. Work 4 ch. Join to top of 1st side of large boom. Fasten off.
Centre of Large Boom
Using (110) Black work 30 ch. Fasten off leaving a long tail to stitch it to the boom.
Small Boom 1st Side
Using (110) Black work 4 ch, 1 sl st in 2nd last ch, 10 ch. Fasten off.
Small Boom 2nd Side
Using (110) Black work 13 ch, 1 sl st in 2nd last ch. Work 3 ch. Join to top of 1st side of small boom. Fasten off.
Centre of Small Boom
Using (110) Black work 16 ch. Fasten off leaving a long tail to stitch it to the boom.
Large Pulley
Using (208) Yellow Gold make a magic loop.
1 ch, work 8 dc in circle. Pull circle tight and join with a sl st in top of 1st st. Fasten off.
Small Pulley
Using (208) Yellow Gold make a magic loop.
1 ch, work 4 dc in circle. Pull circle tight and join with a sl st in top of 1st st. Fasten off.
Top of Hook
Using (208) Yellow Gold make a magic loop.
1 ch, work 4 dc in circle. Pull circle tight and join with a sl st in top of 1st st. Fasten off.
Hook
Using (110) Black work 8 ch.
Miss 1st ch, (work a joined sl st over next 2 sts) 2 times, 1 sl st in each remaining ch. Fasten off.
To Make Up
Weave in ends. Stitch a large circle towards each side of the track.
Attach the small circles in between the large circles.
Sew the turntable in behind the top of the track where shown.
Stitch the window to the cabin.
Sew the cabin to the turntable.
Attach the counterweight to the counterweight bar.
Sew the counterweight bar in behind the cabin where shown.
Stitch the pulleys to the top of the booms with a French knot as shown.
Attach the centre of the booms in between the sides as shown.
Sew the booms behind the crane where shown.
Sew the hook behind the top of hook.
Stitch grey yarn from behind the counterweight up around the small pulley, around the large pulley and fasten behind the hook top as shown.
And there’s the finished crane applique. I’ve also made it in different sizes and colours.
