Crochet Cockatoo Pattern
Abbreviations
- st – stitch
- sts – stitches
- ch – chain
- sl st – slip stitch
- sc – single crochet
- hdc – half double crochet
- dc – double crochet
- tr – treble crochet
Materials Used
- I used white, yellow, grey and brown 4 ply crochet cotton.
- A crochet hook, I used a 1.25mm hook.
- Scissors.
- Thread and sewing needle to stitch the cockatoo together.
- Darning needle to weave in ends.
- Black sewing or embroidery cotton to embroider on the eye or a bead if you prefer.
Head
Make a magic loop.
Row 1: Work 2 ch and 1 hdc into circle. Pull circle tight. Work 6 ch. Turn.
Row 2: Miss 2 ch and work 1 hdc in each remaining ch, the hdc and in top of ch. Turn. (6 sts)
Row 3: 2 ch, 2 hdc in 1st st, 1 hdc in each st to last st, 2 hdc in last st. Turn. (8 sts)
Row 4: 2 ch, 3 hdc in 1st st, 1 hdc in each st to last 2 sts, a joined hdc over last 2 sts. Turn. (9 sts)
Row 5: 2 ch, 1 hdc in each st to end. Turn. (9 sts)
Row 6: 2 ch, 1 hdc in each st to end. Turn. 3 ch. (9 sts + 3 ch)
Row 7: Miss 1st 2 ch, work 1 hdc in last ch, 1 hdc in each st to last 2 sts, a joined hdc over last 2 sts. Turn. (9 sts)
Row 8: 2 ch, 1 hdc in each st to end. Turn. (9 sts)
Row 9: 2 ch, 2 hdc in 1st st, 1 hdc in each st to end. Turn. (10 sts)
Row 10: 2 ch, 2 hdc in 1st st, 1 hdc in each st to last st, 2 hdc in last st. Turn. (12 sts)
Row 11: 2 ch, 1 hdc in each st to last st, 3 hdc in last st. Turn. (14 sts)
Row 12: 2 ch, 2 hdc in 1st st, 1 hdc in each st to last st, 2 hdc in last st. Turn. (16 sts)
Row 13: 2 ch, 2 hdc in 1st st, 1 hdc in each st to end. Turn. (17 sts)
Row 14: 2 ch, 2 hdc in 1st st, 1 hdc in each st to end. Turn. (18 sts)
Row 15: 2 ch, 1 hdc in each st to last st, 2 hdc in last st. Turn. (19 sts)
Row 16: 2 ch, 2 hdc in 1st st, 1 hdc in each st to last 2 sts, a joined hdc over last 2 sts. Turn. (19 sts)
Row 17: 2 ch, 1 hdc in each st to end. Turn. (19 sts)

Row 19: 2 ch, 1 joined hdc over 1st 2 sts, 1 hdc in each st to end. Turn. (18 sts)
Row 20: 2 ch, 1 hdc in each st to last 2 sts, a joined hdc over last 2 sts. Turn. (17 sts)
Row 21: 2 ch, 1 hdc in each st to end. Turn. (17 sts)
Row 22: 2 ch, a joined hdc over 1st 2 sts, 1 hdc in each st to last 2 sts, a joined hdc over last 2 sts. Turn. (15 sts)
Row 23: 2 ch, a joined hdc over 1st 2 sts, 1 hdc in each st to end. Turn. (14 sts)
Row 24: 2 ch, a joined hdc over 1st 2 sts, 1 hdc in each st to last 2 sts, a joined hdc over last 2 sts. Turn. (12 sts)
Row 25: 2 ch, a joined hdc over 1st 2 sts, 1 hdc in each st to last 2 sts, a joined hdc over last 2 sts. Turn. (10 sts)
Row 26: 2 ch, a joined hdc over 1st 2 sts, 1 hdc in each st to last 2 sts, a joined hdc over last 2 sts. Turn. (8 sts)
Row 27: 2 ch, a joined hdc over 1st 2 sts, 1 hdc in each st to last 2 sts, a joined hdc over last 2 sts. Turn. (6 sts)
Row 28: 2 ch, a joined hdc over 1st 2 sts, 1 hdc in each st to last 2 sts, a joined hdc over last 2 sts. Turn. (4 sts)
Row 29: 2 ch, work a joined hdc over 1st 2 sts and a joined hdc over last 2 sts. Turn. (2 sts)
Row 30: 3 ch, Work a joined dc over both sts. Don’t fasten off.
Neatening Row
1 ch, work 1 sc in each st around, join with a sl st in 1st st. Fasten off.
Tail
9 ch.
Row 1: Miss 2 ch and work 1 hdc in each remaining ch. Turn. (7 sts)
Rows 2-11: 2 ch, 1 hdc in each st to end. Turn.
Row 12: 3 ch, 1 dc in each of 1st 4 sts, 1 sc in next st, 1 dc in each remaining st. Don’t fasten off.
Neatening Row
1 ch, 1 sc in each st around tail. Join with a sl st in 1st st. Fasten off.
Wing
Make a magic loop.
Row 1: 2 ch, work 1 hdc into circle. Pull circle tight but don’t join. Turn.
Row 2: 2 ch, 1 hdc in st and 1 hdc in top of ch. Turn. (2 sts)
Row 3: 2 ch, 1 hdc in each st to end. Turn. (2 sts)
Row 4: 2 ch, 1 hdc in 1st st, 2 hdc in last st. Turn. (3 sts)
Row 5: 2 ch, 1 hdc in each st to last st, 2 hdc in last st. Turn. (4 sts)
Row 6: 2 ch, 1 hdc in each st to end. Turn. (4 sts)
Row 7: 2 ch, 1 hdc in each st to last st, 2 hdc in last st. Turn. (5 sts)
Row 8: 2 ch, 1 hdc in each st to end. Turn. (5 sts)
Row 9: 2 ch, 1 hdc in each st to last st, 2 hdc in last st. Turn. (6 sts)

Row 14: 2 ch, a hdc cluster over all sts. Don’t fasten off.
Neatening Row
1 ch, work 1 sc in each st around. Join with a sl st in 1st st. Fasten off.
Beak
Join grey cotton at row 6 of body as shown.
Row 1: 1 ch, work 1 sc in same st as ch, a joined sc over next 2 sts, 1 sc in following st, a joined sc over next 2 sts and 1 sc in following st. Turn.
Row 2: 1 ch, 1 sc in 1st st, a sc cluster over next 3 sts, 1 sc in last st. Turn.
Row 3: 2 ch, work a hdc cluster over all sts. Fasten off.
Crest
Join yellow cotton to top of head as shown.
Row 1: 2 ch, work 1 hdc in same st as ch, 1 hdc in each of next 5 sts, 2 hdc in following st, 1 hdc in each of next 2 sts, 2 hdc in each of following 2 sts, 1 hdc in each of next 5 sts. Turn.
1st Crest Section
Row 1: 2 ch, 1 hdc in same st as ch, a joined hdc over next 2 sts. Turn.
Row 2: 2 ch, a joined hdc over both sts. Fasten off.
2nd Crest Section
Join cotton in next st on wrong side as shown.
Row 1: 2 ch, work 1 hdc in each of next 3 sts. Turn.
Row 2: 2 ch, a joined hdc over 1st 2 sts, 1 hdc in next st. Turn.
Row 3: 2 ch, a joined hdc over both sts. Fasten off.
3rd Crest Section
Join cotton in next st on wrong side as shown.
Row 1: 2 ch, work 1 hdc in each of next 5 sts. Turn.
Row 2: 2 ch, a joined hdc over 1st 2 sts, 1 hdc in next st, a joined hdc over last 2 sts. Turn.
Row 3: 2 ch, a joined hdc over 1st 2 sts, 1 hdc in next st. Turn.
Row 4: 2 ch, a joined hdc over both sts. Fasten off.
4th Crest Section
Join cotton in same st as last st of 3rd crest section on wrong side as shown.
Row 1: 2 ch, work 1 hdc in each of next 3 sts. Turn.
Row 2: 2 ch, a joined hdc over 1st 2 sts, 1 hdc in next st. Turn.
Row 3: 2 ch, a joined hdc over both sts. Fasten off.
5th Crest Section
Join cotton in same st as last st of 4th crest section on wrong side as shown.
Row 1: 2 ch, work 1 hdc in each of last 3 sts and 1 hdc in top of ch. Turn.
Row 2: 2 ch, 1 hdc in each of 1st 2 sts, a joined hdc over last 2 sts. Turn.
Row 3: 2 ch, a joined hdc over 1st 2 sts, 1 hdc in next st. Turn.
Row 4: 2 ch, a joined hdc over both sts. Fasten off.
Branch
Using brown work 45 ch.
Miss 2 ch, work 1 hdc in next st, 3 tr in following st, 1 dc in each of next 2 sts, 5 tr in following st, a 3 dc cluster over next 3 sts, 1 dc in each of following 18 sts, 3 dc in next st, 1 dc in each of following 5 sts, 3 dc in each of next 2 sts, 1 dc in each of following 2 sts, 1 tr in each st to end. Fasten off.
Claws (Make 2)
Using grey make a magic loop.
Row 1: 2 ch, into circle work 2 hdc, pull circle tight but don’t join. Turn.
Row 2: 2 ch, work a joined hdc over both sts. Fasten off.
To Make Up
Weave in ends. Stitch tail to the body positioning the top of the tail behind the body as shown.
Attach the wing to the body.
Sew the branch across the body as shown.
Stitch the claws over the branch.
Embroider on an eye or stitch on a black bead.
