Welcome to my crochet cloud applique and finger puppet pattern. The finished crochet cloud is going to look like this.

Crochet Cloud Pattern

Abbreviations 

  • st – stitch
  • sts – stitches
  • ch – chain
  • sl st – slip stitch
  • sc – single crochet
  • hdc – half double crochet
  • dc – double crochet
  • tr – treble crochet

Materials Used

  • I used grey and blue 8 ply wool which is light worsted in the US and double knit in the UK.
  • A crochet hook, I used a 2.5mm hook.
  • Scissors.
  • A sewing needle and thread to stitch the cloud together.
  • Darning needle to weave in ends.
  • A small amount of embroidery or sewing cotton to embroider on a mouth and the dots on the eyes.

Size

Large cloud (Using 8 ply wool)

8.5cm x 7.5cm or 3.25” x 3”

Small cloud (Using 4 ply crochet cotton)

5.5cm x 4.5cm or 2.25” x 1.75”

 

Cloud

Make a magic loop.

Row 1: Into circle work 1 ch, 3 hdc, 3 dc, 6 hdc, 3 dc and 3 hdc.  Pull circle tight and join with a sl st in top of 1st hdc.

Row 2:  1 ch, 1 hdc in same st as ch, 1 hdc in next st, 2 hdc in following st, 2 dc in each of next 3 sts, 2 hdc in following st, 1 hdc in each of next 4 sts, 2 hdc in following st, 2 dc in each of next 3 sts, 2 hdc in following st, 1 hdc in each remaining st.  Sl st in top of 1st st.

Row 3:  2 ch, 1 dc in same st as ch,1 dc in each of next 4 sts, 2 dc in each of following 5 sts, 1 dc in each of next 8 sts, 2 dc in each of following 5 sts, 1 dc in each st to end.  Join with a sl st in top of 1st st.

Row 4:  2 ch, 1 dc in same place as ch, 1 dc in each of next 2 sts, 1 hdc in each of following 2 sts, 1 sc in next st, (2 dc in next st, 2 tr in following st, 2 dc in next st, 1 sc in following st, sl st in next st, 1 sc in following st) 4 times, 2 dc in next st, 2 tr in following st, 2 dc in next st, 1 sc in following st, 1 hdc in each of next 2 sts, 1 dc in each st to end.  Sl st in top of 1st st and fasten off.

Eye (Make 2)

Make a magic loop.

1 ch, 4 sc into circle.  Pull circle tight and join with a sl st in top of 1st st.  Fasten off.

Rain-drops (If making a rain-cloud – I made 4)

You could use teardrop beads instead.

Make a magic loop.

Work 2 ch and 1 hdc in circle.  Pull circle tight and fasten off leaving a long tail to stitch to the bottom of the cloud.

To Make Up

Weave in ends.  Embroider a black dot in the middle of each eye.

Stitch the eyes to the cloud.

Embroider on eyelashes if desired.

Embroider on a mouth.

If making a rain-cloud attach raindrops or beads to the bottom of the cloud leaving them hang down at different lengths.

To Make a Finger Puppet Using A Crochet Back

Make another cloud section for the back.

Having the wrong sides facing crochet the cloud together using a sl st in each stitch leaving a gap for your finger at the bottom of the cloud.

To Make a Finger Puppet Using A Felt Back

Pin your cloud to a piece of felt and machine sew around the cloud leaving a gap for your finger at the bottom of the cloud.

Trim away the excess felt.
