Welcome to my crochet bulrushes pattern. This pattern was a request. This is what the finished bulrushes applique will look like.

Crochet Bulrushes Pattern

Abbreviations 

  • st – stitch
  • sts – stitches
  • ch – chain
  • sl st – slip stitch
  • dc – double crochet
  • htr – half treble crochet
  • tr – treble crochet

Materials Used 

  • Any thickness crochet cotton or yarn, I used Scheepjes Maxi Sweet Treat 2 ply crochet cotton colours (606) Grass Green, (162) Black Coffee and (404) English Tea.
  • A crochet hook, I used a 1mm hook.
  • A darning needle to weave in ends.
  • Scissors.
  • Sewing thread and a needle to stitch the bulrushes together.

Crochet bulrushes 2 ply cotton

Size

Large bulrushes (Using 8 ply yarn & a 3mm hook)

11cm wide x 10cm high or 4.25” wide x 4” high

Medium bulrushes (Using 4 ply crochet cotton & a 1.5mm hook)

8cm wide x 7.5cm high or 3” wide x 2.75” high

Small bulrushes (Using 2 ply crochet cotton & a 1mm hook)

5cm wide x 6cm high or 2” wide x 2.25” high

1st Leaf

Using (606) Grass Green work 12 ch.

 

Miss 1st ch, work 1 sl st in each of next 3 ch, 2 dc in following ch, 1 dc in each remaining ch. Turn.

2nd Leaf

Work 1 sl st in each of 1st 6 sts, 17 ch, miss 1st ch, work 1 sl st in each of next 4 ch, 1 dc in following ch, 2 dc in next ch, 1 dc in each remaining ch, sl st in 1st st in the side of the stem. Turn.

3rd Leaf

Sl st in each of 1st 8 sts. 13 ch. Miss 1st ch, work 1 sl st in each of next 4 ch, 1 dc in following ch, 2 dc in next ch, 1 dc in each remaining ch, 1 sl st in each of next 7 sts.

4th Leaf

19 ch. Miss 1st ch, work 1 sl st in each of next 3 ch, 1 dc in following ch, a joined dc over next 3 ch, 1 dc in each ch to last ch, 2 dc in last ch, sl st in 1st st of the stem. Turn.

5th Leaf

Work 1 sl st in each of 1st 3 sts. 7 ch, miss 1st ch, work 1 sl st in each of next 2 ch, 1 dc in each ch to last ch, 2 dc in last ch, 1 sl st in each st to end of the stem. Fasten off.

Bulrushes (Make 2)

Using (162) Black Coffee work 8 ch.

 

Miss 1st 2 ch, work 1 tr in each remaining ch, 2 ch, sl st in the bottom of last st. Fasten off.

Stems

Using (404) English Tea work 26 ch. Miss 1st ch, work 1 sl st in each of next 3 ch.  19 ch.  Fasten off.

To Make Up

Weave in ends. Stitch a bulrush about 2 stitches down from the top of each stem.

Sew the stems in behind the leaves.
