Today I’ll be showing you how to make this butterfly crochet pattern.

Butterfly Crochet Pattern
Abbreviations
- st – stitch
- sts – stitches
- ch – chain
- sl st – slip stitch
- dc – double crochet
- htr – half treble crochet
- tr – treble crochet
- dtr – double treble crochet
- ttr – triple treble crochet
Materials Used
- Crochet cotton or wool, I used 7 colours of 4 ply crochet cotton.
- A crochet hook, I used a 1.25mm hook.
- Scissors.
- Darning needle to weave in ends.
- Sewing needle and black cotton to sew upper body onto body.
Body
15 ch.
Miss 1st ch, work 1 dc into each ch to end then work 1 dc into the back of each ch. Fasten off.
Wing
Join cotton to top of body as shown.
25 ch.
Work 1 dtr in 5th ch from hook, 2 ttr in each of next 2 sts, 1 joined dtr over following 2 sts, 1 dtr in each of next 3 sts, 1 joined dtr over following 2 sts, 1 tr in each of next 3 sts, 1 htr in each of following 5 sts, 1 dc in each st to end. Sl st into next st on body. Fasten off.
Join next colour 5 sts from end of 1st wing segment as shown.
4 ch, work 3 dtr in same place as ch, 1 dtr in each of next 4 sts, 1 joined dtr over following 2 sts, 1 tr in each of next 3 sts, 1 htr in each of following 3 sts, 1 dc in each of last 4 sts. Sl st into next st on body. Fasten off.
Join next colour 5 sts from end of 2nd wing segment.
4 ch, work 3 dtr in same place as ch, 1 dtr in each of next 3 sts, 1 joined dtr over following 2 sts, 1 tr in each of next 3 sts, 1 htr in each of following 3 sts, 1 dc in next st and 2 dc in last st. Sl st into next st on body. Fasten off.
Join next colour 4 sts from end of 3rd wing segment.
4 ch, work 3 dtr in same place as ch, 1 dtr in each of next 4 sts, 1 joined dtr over next 2 sts, 1 tr in each of next 3 sts, 1 htr in each of following 2 sts, 2 dc in last st. Sl st into next st on body. Fasten off.
Join next colour 4 sts from end of 4th wing segment.
4 ch, work 3 dtr in same place as ch, 1 dtr in each of next 2 sts, 1 joined dtr over following 2 sts, 1 tr in each of next 3 sts, 1 htr in each of following 3 sts, 1 dc in last st. Sl st into next st on body. Fasten off.
Join next colour 5 sts from end of 5th wing segment.
4 ch, work 3 dtr in same place as ch, 1 tr in each of next 5 sts, 1 htr in each of following 2 sts, 2 dc in last st. Sl st into next st on body. Fasten off.
Join next colour 4 sts from end of 6th wing segment.
4 ch, work 3 dtr in same place as ch, 1 dtr in each of next 2 sts, 1 tr in each of following 2 sts, 1 htr in each of next 2 sts, 1 dc in each of last 2 sts. Sl st into next st on body. Fasten off.
Join next colour 2 sts from end of 7th wing segment.
5 ch, work 3 dtr in 5th ch from hook, 1 dtr in st where you started the ch and next st, 2 dtr in following st, 1 tr in each of next 3 sts, 1 htr in each of following 3 sts, 1 dc in last st. Sl st into next st on body. Fasten off.
Join next colour 1 st from end of 8th wing segment.
6 ch, miss 4 ch and work 2 dtr in each of next 2 ch, 1 dtr in st where you started the ch and next st, 2 dtr in following st, 1 dtr in each of next 2 sts, 2 tr in following st, 1 tr in each of next 3 sts, 1 htr in each of next 3 sts, 1 dc in following st, 2 dc in last st. Sl st into next st on body. Fasten off.
Join next colour 2 sts from end of 9th wing segment.
6 ch, miss 4 ch and work 2 dtr in each of next 2 ch, 1 dtr in st where you started the ch and next st, 2 dtr in following st, 1 dtr in each of next 4 sts, 2 tr in each of following 2 sts, 1 tr in each of next 4 sts, 1 htr in each of following 4 sts, 1 dc in each of last 3 sts. Sl st into next st on body. Fasten off.
Join next colour 3 sts from end of 10th wing segment.

Join to body across from 1st segment of 1st wing as shown.

With the colour for the 9th wing segment join cotton 1 st from end of 8th wing segment as shown.

Join next colour 1 st down the body from 8th wing segment.
2 dc in 1st st, 1 dc in next st, 1 htr in each of following 3 sts, 1 tr in each of next 3 sts, 2 tr in following st, 1 dtr in each of next 2 sts, 2 dtr in following st, 1 dtr in each of next 2 sts, 2 dtr in each of the ch, 4 ch, sl st in same st as last dtr. Fasten off.
With the colour for the 10th wing segment join cotton 2 sts from end of 9th wing segment.
Work 2 ch. Fasten off.
Join next colour 1 st down the body from 9th wing segment.

Work 2 ch. Fasten off.
Join next colour 1 st down the body from 10th wing segment.
1 dc in each of next 6 sts, 1 htr in each of following 4 sts, 2 htr in next st, 1 tr in each of following 5 sts, 2 tr in next st, 1 dtr in each of following 4 sts, 2 dtr in following st, 1 dtr in each of next 2 sts and where you started the ch, 2 dtr in each of the ch, 4 ch, sl st in same st as last dtr. Fasten off.
With the colour for the 12th wing segment join cotton 4 sts from end of 11th wing segment.
Work 4 ch. Fasten off.
Join next colour 1 st down the body from 11th wing segment.
1 dc in each of next 8 sts, 1 htr in each of following 3 sts, 2 tr in next st, 1 tr in each of following 4 sts, 2 tr in next st, 1 dtr in each of following 4 sts, 2 dtr in following st, 1 dtr in each of next 3 sts, 2 joined dtr over next 4 sts, 1 dtr in each remaining st, 4 ch, sl st in same st as last dtr. Fasten off.
Upper Body
Make a magic loop.
Row 1: 3 ch, work 1 tr into circle. Pull circle tight but don’t join. Turn.
Row 2: 3 ch, work 1 tr in st and 1 tr in top of ch. Turn. (2 sts)
Row 3: 3 ch, work 1 tr into each st to end. Turn. (2 sts)
Row 4: 3 ch, work 1 tr into each st and in top of ch. Turn. (3 sts)
Row 5: 3 ch, work 1 tr into each st to end. Turn. (3 sts)
Row 6: 3 ch, work 1 tr into each st and in top of ch. Turn. (4 sts)
Row 7: 3 ch, work 1 tr into each st to end. Turn. (4 sts)
Row 8: 4 ch, work a dtr cluster over all sts. 12 ch, work 1 dc in 3rd ch from hook, 1 sl st in each ch to head, sl st into head, 12 ch, work 1 dc in 3rd ch from hook, 1 sl st in each ch to head, sl st into head. Fasten off.
To Make Up
Weave in ends. Stitch the upper body over the top of the body.
