Welcome to my crochet rooster pattern. This is a request that I received. This is what the finished rooster applique will look like.

Crochet Rooster Pattern
Abbreviations
- st – stitch
- sts – stitches
- ch – chain
- sl st – slip stitch
- sc – single crochet
- hdc – half double crochet
- dc – double crochet
- tr – treble crochet
- dtr – double treble crochet
Materials Used
- Crochet cotton or wool, I used Scheepjes Maxi Sugar Rush or Maxi Sweet Treat 2 ply crochet cotton colors (401) Dark Teal, (383) Ginger Gold, (208) Yellow Gold, (254) Moon Rock, (115) Hot Red, (162) Black Coffee and (189) Royal Orange.
- A crochet hook, I used a 1mm hook.
- Scissors.
- Darning needle to weave in ends.
- Sewing thread and needle to stitch the rooster together.
- A small white bead for the eye.
Size
Large rooster (Using 8 ply yarn & a 3mm hook)
17.5cm x 15cm or 6.75” x 6”
Medium rooster (Using 4 ply crochet cotton & a 1.5mm hook)
10.5cm x 11cm or 4” x 4.5”
Small rooster (Using 2 ply crochet cotton & a 1mm hook)
8cm x 8cm or 3.25” x 3.25”
Head
Using (383) Ginger Gold work 4 ch.
Row 1: Work 1 sc in 2nd ch from hook, 1 dc in next st, 1 sc in last st. Turn. (3 sts)
Row 2: 1 ch, work 2 sc in 1st st, 1 sc in next st, 2 sc in last st. Turn. (5 sts)
Rows 3-5: 1 ch, work 1 sc in each st. Turn. (5 sts)
Row 6: 1 ch, work 1 sc in each st to last st, 2 sc in last st. Turn. (6 sts)
Row 7: 1 ch, work 1 sc in each st to last st, 2 sc in last st. Turn. (7 sts)
Row 8: 1 ch, work 1 sc in each of 1st 4 sts, 1 hdc in each of next 2 sts, 2 hdc in last st. Turn. (8 sts)
Row 9: (4 ch, miss 1st ch, work 1 sl st in each remaining ch, sl st in next st along row 8, 3 ch, miss 1st ch, work 1 sl st in each remaining ch, sl st in next st of row 8) 4 times. Don’t turn or fasten off.
Neatening Row
Work 1 sl st in each st to beginning of row 9. Fasten off.
Wattle
Using (115) Hot Red make a magic loop.
Row 1: 1 ch, work 5 sc in circle. Pull circle tight and join with a sl st in top of 1st st. Turn.
Row 2: 2 ch, work 1 hdc in same st as ch and 1 dc in next st. Turn.
Row 3: 2 ch, work a joined hdc over the 2 sts. Fasten off.
Comb
Using (115) Hot Red work 4 ch.
Row 1: Work 1 sc in 2nd ch from hook, 2 sc in next st, 1 sc in last st. Turn. (4 sts)
Row 2: (3 ch, work 1 dc in same st as ch, 3 ch, sl st in same st as dc, sl st in next st) 2 times, 2 ch, 1 hdc in same st as ch, 2 ch, sl st in same st as hdc, sl st in next st, 2 ch, 1 hdc in same st as ch, 2 ch, sl st in same st as hdc. Fasten off.
Beak
Using (208) Yellow Gold make a magic loop.
Row 1: 2 ch, work 1 hdc in circle. Pull circle tight. Turn.
Row 2: 1 ch, work 2 sc in st. Turn.
Row 3: 1 ch, work 1 sc in each st. Fasten off.
Body
Using (401) Dark Teal work 8 ch.
Row 1: Miss 1st ch, work 1 sc in each remaining ch. Turn. (7 sts)
Row 2: 1 ch, work 2 sc in 1st st, 1 sc in each st to last st, 2 sc in last st. Turn. (9 sts)
Row 3: 1 ch, work 2 sc in 1st st, 1 sc in each st to last st, 3 sc in last st. Turn. (12 sts)
Row 4: 2 ch, work 2 hdc in 1st st, 1 sc in each st to end. Turn. (13 sts)
Row 5: 1 ch, work 1 sc in each st to last st, 2 sc in last st. 3 ch. (14 sts + 3 ch)
Row 6: Miss 1st ch, work 1 sc in each st to end. Turn. (16 sts)
Row 7: 1 ch, work a joined sc over 1st 2 sts, 1 sc in each st to last st, 2 sc in last st. Turn. (16 sts)
Row 8: 1 ch, work 2 sc in 1st st, 1 sc in each st to last 2 sts, a joined sc over last 2 sts. Turn. (16 sts)
Row 9: 1 ch, work a joined sc over 1st 2 sts, 1 sc in each st to last st, 2 hdc in last st. Turn. (16 sts)
Row 10: 1 ch, work 1 sc in each st to end. Turn. (16 sts)
Row 11: 1 ch, work a joined sc over 1st 2 sts, 1 sc in each st to end. Turn. (15 sts)
Row 12: 1 ch, work 1 sc in each st to last 2 sts, a joined sc over last 2 sts. Turn. (14 sts)
Row 13: 1 ch, work a joined sc over 1st 2 sts, 1 sc in each st to end. Turn. (13 sts)
Row 14: 1 ch, work 1 sc in each st to last 2 sts, a joined sc over last 2 sts. Turn. (12 sts)
Row 15: 1 ch, work 1 sc in each of 1st 10 sts. Turn. (10 sts)
Row 16: 1 ch, work 1 sc in each st. Turn. (10 sts)
Row 17: 1 ch, work a joined sc over 1st 2 sts, 1 sc in each of next 7 sts. Turn. (8 sts)
Row 18: 1 ch, work a sl st in 2nd st, 1 ch, 1 sc in same st as ch, 1 sc in each of next 3 sts. Turn. (4 sts)
Row 19: 1 ch, work a joined sc over 1st 2 sts and a joined sc over last 2 sts. Don’t turn or fasten off.
Neatening Row
Work 1 sl st in each of next 2 sts, (1 hdc and 1 sl st in next st) 4 times, 1 sl st in each st around to beginning of row. Fasten off.
Tail
Join (401) Dark Teal where shown.
Row 1: 4 ch, work 1 sl st in 2nd ch from hook, 1 sc in next st, (5 ch, work 1 sl st in 2nd ch from hook, 1 sc in each remaining ch) 2 times, 7 ch, work 1 sl st in 2nd ch from hook, 1 sc in each of next 2 sts, 1 hdc in each of following 2 sts, 2 dc in last ch, work 1 dc in each st to last st along top of row 1, sl st in side of body, sl st in next 2 sts up side of body. Turn.
Row 2: Work 1 dc in each of next 5 sts, 2 hdc in next st, 1 sc in following st, sl st in next st. 7 ch.
Row 3: Work 1 sl st in 2nd ch from hook, 2 sc in each of next 2 sts, 2 hdc in following st, 1 dc in next st, 2 tr in last ch, 2 tr in next st, 2 dtr in each of following 2 sts, 2 tr in next st, 1 dc in following st, 1 hdc in each of next 2 sts, a joined sc over remaining sts. Sl st in the side of body. Fasten off.
Top of Wing
Using (401) Dark Teal work 4 ch.
Row 1: Work 1 sc in 2nd ch from hook, 1 dc in next st, 1 sc in last st. Turn. (3 sts)
Row 2: 1 ch, work 2 sc in 1st st, 1 sc in next st, 2 sc in last st. Turn. (5 sts)
Row 3: 1 ch, sl st in 1st st, (3 ch, sl st in next st) repeat to end of row. Work 1 sl st in each st around the top of wing to beginning of row 3. Fasten off.
Bottom of Wing
Using (254) Moon Rock work 10 ch.
Row 1: Miss 1st ch, work 1 sl st in each of next 3 sts, 1 sc in each of following 3 sts, 1 hdc in each of last 3 sts. Turn. (9 sts)
Row 2: 2 ch, work 1 hdc in each of 1st 3 sts, 1 sc in each of next 3 sts, 1 sl st in each of following 2 sts. Turn. (8 sts)
Row 3: Work 1 sl st in 2nd st, 1 sc in each of next 2 sts, 1 hdc in each remaining st. Fasten off.
Feet (Make 2)
Join (189) Royal Orange to bottom of leg sections where shown.
7 ch, miss 1 ch, work 1 sl st in each of next 3 sts, (4 ch, miss 1st ch, work 1 sl st in each remaining ch and last sl st of 1st claw) 3 times, work 1 sc in each ch to body, sl st in body. Fasten off.
Lower Back Feathers
Using (383) Ginger Gold work 11 ch.
Miss 1st ch and work 1 sl st in each of next 5 sts, 7 ch, miss 1st ch, work 1 sl st in each remaining ch, and next of original ch, 10 ch, miss 1st ch, 1 sl st in each remaining ch and next of original ch, 8 ch, miss 1st ch, 1 sl st in each remaining ch and next of original ch, 6 ch, miss 1st ch, 1 sl st in each remaining ch and next of original ch, 5 ch, miss 1st ch, 1 sl st in each remaining ch and last of original ch. Fasten off.
Top Back Feathers
Using (162) Black Coffee work 5 ch.
Row 1: Miss 1st ch, work 1 sc in each remaining ch. Turn.
Row 2: 1 ch, work 1 sc in 1st st, (2 ch, 1 sc in next st) 3 times. Turn.
Row 3: Work 1 sc in 1st 2 ch loop, (2 ch, 1 sc in next 2 ch loop) 2 times, 2 ch, work 1 sc in last sc. Turn.
Row 4: Work 1 sc in 1st 2 ch loop, 3 ch, work 1 sc in next 2 ch loop. Fasten off.
To Make Up
Weave in ends. Attach a small white bead to the centre of the circle of the wattle.
Stitch a small black dot in the middle of the bead.
Sew the wattle to the head.
Attach the comb to the head.
Stitch the beak to the head up against the top of the wattle.
Sew the bottom of the wing in behind the top of the wing.
Attach the wing to the body.
Stitch the lower back feathers along the top back to the tail.
Sew the top back feathers where shown.
Attach the head to the top of the body.
