Welcome to my crochet penguin granny square pattern. This pattern was another request. This is what the finished penguin granny square will look like.

Crochet Penguin Granny Square Pattern
Abbreviations
- st – stitch
- sts – stitches
- ch – chain
- sl st – slip stitch
- dc – double crochet
- htr – half treble crochet
- tr – treble crochet
- dtr – double treble crochet
Materials Used
- I used 8 ply yarn which is DK yarn in colours light blue, white, black and orange.
- A crochet hook, I used a 4mm hook.
- A darning needle to weave in ends.
- Scissors.
- Black sewing thread and a needle to stitch the eyes to the penguin.
- White cotton to embroider the dot on the eyes.
Size
13cm square or 5” Square
Circle Centre
Using the white make a magic loop.
Row 1: 2 ch, work 12 tr into circle and pull circle tight. Join with a sl st in top of 1st st. (12 sts)
Row 2: 2 ch, work 2 tr in each st. Join with a sl st in top of 1st st. (24 sts)
Row 3: 2 ch, work 1 tr in same st as ch, 1 tr in next st, 2 tr in following st, (1 tr in each of next 2 sts, 2 tr in following st) repeat to end of row. Join with a sl st in top of 1st st. (32 sts) Fasten off.
Granny Square Edge
Join light blue in back loop only to any stitch of circle.
We work into the back loop only for 1st row so the penguin can be worked into the front loop.
Row 4: 3 ch (counts as tr), working into back loop only for whole row work 1 tr in same st as ch, 1 htr in each of next 2 sts, 1 dc in each of following 3 sts, 1 htr in each of next 2 sts, (into next st work 2 tr, 2 ch, 2 tr, 1 htr in each of next 2 sts, 1 dc in each of following 3 sts, 1 htr in each of next 2 sts) 2 times, into next st work 2 tr, 2 ch and 2 tr, 1 htr in each of following 2 sts, 1 dc in each of next 3 sts, 1 htr in each of following 2 sts, 2 tr in same st as 1st st, 1 ch, work 1 dc in the top of the 3 ch.
Row 5: 3 ch (counts as tr), work 1 tr in loop next to ch, 1 tr in join, work 1 tr in each st along sides and 2 tr, 2 ch and 2 tr in each corner loop to last corner. Into last corner work 2 tr, 1 ch and 1 dc in the top of the 3 ch. (15 tr in each side).
Row 6: 3 ch (counts as tr), work 1 tr in loop next to ch, 1 tr in join, work 1 tr in each st along sides and 2 tr, 2 ch and 2 tr in each corner loop to last corner. Into last corner work 2 tr, 2 ch and sl st in the top of the 3 ch. (19 tr in each side) Fasten off.
Head
Join white 3 sts before centre st on a side, in front loop left on row 3.
4 ch, working in front loop only work a joined dtr over same st as join and each of next 3 sts, 4 ch, sl st in same st as last dtr, 4 ch, work a joined dtr over same st as last sl st and next 3 sts, 4 ch, sl st in same st as last dtr. Fasten off. I left long tails to weave the head together.
Around Body
Join black 12 sts before 1st st of head, in front loop left on row 3.
1 ch, working into front loop work 1 dc in same st as join, 1 dc in each of next 3 sts, 1 htr in following st, 2 tr in each of next 5 sts, 1 tr in following st, 1 htr in next st, 1 dc in each st around 1st part of head to last st, a joined dc over next 2 sts, 1 dc in each st around 2nd part of head, 1 htr in next st of circle, 1 tr in following st, 2 tr in each of next 5 sts, 1 htr in following st, 1 dc in each of next 4 sts. Fasten off.
Right Arm
Join Black 3 sts down from neck.
7 ch.
Miss 2 ch, work 1 htr in each of next 3 ch, a joined tr over last 2 ch. Miss next st on body, join to following st. Fasten off.
Left Arm
Join black 5 sts down from neck.
6 ch.
Miss 2 ch, work 1 htr in each of next 3 ch, 2 tr in last ch, join to body 2 sts up from join. Fasten off.
Beak
Using orange work 7 ch
1 dc in 2nd ch from hook, 1 htr in next ch, 1 tr in each of following 2 ch, 1 htr in next ch, 1 dc in last ch. Fasten off. I left long tails and wove them to centre to join the beak to the head.
Feet
Join Orange to 3rd last st on right side of around body and 1st st of left side.
(3 ch, sl st in same st, sl st in next st) 2 times, 3 ch, sl st in same st. Fasten off.
Eyes (Make 2)
Using black make a magic loop.
1 ch, work 3 dc in circle. Pull circle tight and join with a sl st in ch. Fasten off.
To Make Up
Weave in ends. Add a white dot to the centre of each eye.
Attach the eyes to the head.
Stitch the beak to the bottom centre of the head along the middle of the beak.
