Shark Crochet Applique Pattern (UK Version)

Welcome to my shark crochet applique pattern. I was asked if I could design a family of shark finger puppets. This week I’ll have the pattern for the bigger shark and the accessories and next week I’ll have the pattern for the smaller shark. This is what the finished sharks will look like.

Shark Crochet Applique Pattern

Abbreviations

st – stitch
sts – stitches
ch – chain
sl st – slip stitch
dc – double crochet
htr – half treble crochet
tr – treble crochet
dtr – double treble crochet

Materials Used

I used grey and white 4 ply crochet cotton.
A crochet hook, I used a 1.25mm hook.
Scissors.
Darning needle to weave in ends.
Sewing thread and a sewing needle to stitch the shark together.
If making a finger puppet a small amount of felt.

Size

Large shark (Using 8 ply wool)

15.5cm x 9cm or 6” x 3.5”

Medium shark (Using 4 ply crochet cotton)

10cm x 6cm or 4” x 2.25”

Head

Using grey make a magic loop.

Row 1: 3 ch, work 2 tr in circle. Pull circle tight but don’t join. Turn.

Row 2: 3 ch, 2 tr in 1^st st, 1 tr in next st and 1 tr in top of the 3 ch. Turn. (4 sts)

Row 3: 4 ch, 2 dtr in 1^st st, 1 tr in each st, 1 tr in top of ch. Turn. (6 sts)

Row 4: 3 ch, a joined tr over 1^st 2 sts, 1 tr in each of next 2 sts, 1 dtr in each of last 2 sts. Turn. (5 sts)

Row 5: 4 ch, 1 tr in 1^st st, 1 htr in each of next 2 sts, 1 dc in each of last 2 sts. Don’t fasten off.

Neatening Row

1 ch, work 1 or 2 dc in each st around. Sl st into 1^st st. Fasten off.

Body

Using grey make a magic loop.

Row 1: 3 ch, work 6 tr in circle. Pull circle tight but don’t join. Turn.

Row 2: 3 ch, 2 tr in 1^st st, 1 tr in each st and 1 tr in top of the 3 ch. Turn. (8 sts)

Row 3: 3 ch, 2 tr in 1^st st, 1 tr in each st, 1 tr in top of ch. Turn. (10 sts)

Row 4: 3 ch, 2 tr in 1^st st, 1 tr in each st, 1 tr in top of ch. Turn. (12 sts)

Row 5: 3 ch, 1 tr in each st to last 3 sts, 1 dtr in each of last 3 sts. Turn. (12 sts)

Rows 6-9: 3 ch, 1 tr in each st to last 2 sts, a joined tr over last 2 sts. Turn. (8 sts after row 9)

Rows 10-11: 3 ch, a joined tr over 1^st 2 sts, 1 tr in each st to last 2 sts, a joined tr over last 2 sts. Turn. (4 sts after row 11)

Row 12: 3 ch, a joined tr over 1^st 2 sts, a joined dc over last 2 sts. Turn. (2 sts)

Row 13: 3 ch, 3 tr in each st. Turn. (6 sts)

Row 14: 4 ch, 2 dtr in 1^st st, 1 dtr in next st, 1 tr and 1 htr in following st, 1 htr and 1 tr in next st, 1 dtr in following st, 2 dtr in last st. Turn. (10 sts)

Row 15: 4 ch, a dtr cluster over 1^st 3 sts. Fasten off.

Join cotton in the 4^th last st on other side of tail.

4 ch, work a dtr cluster over the next 3 sts. Don’t fasten off.

Neatening Row

Sl st in each st down tail, 1 or 2 dc in each st around the body to the tail, sl st in each st up to the 1^st st at end of tail. Into the end of the tail work 2 ch and a joined htr and fasten off. Join cotton in st at bottom of joined htr, sl st in next st then work 1 dc in each st around the bend in the middle of the tail and up the other side to st before top, sl st in next st, work 2 ch and a joined htr in top of tail. Fasten off.

Top Fin

Join cotton 15 sts back from tail on wrong side.

Row 1: 1 dc in 1^st 2 sts, 1 htr in next st, 2 tr in following st, 1 htr in each of next 2 sts, 1 dc in following 2 sts. Turn.

Row 2: 4 ch, a dtr cluster over same st as ch and next 2 sts, 2 tr in following st, 1 dc in next st, sl st in each st to end. Fasten off.

Teeth

15 ch.

1st tooth

Miss 3 ch, a dtr cluster over next 3 sts. Fasten off.

2nd tooth

Join cotton in same st as last part of dtr cluster.

3 ch, a tr cluster over next 3 sts. Fasten off.

3rd Tooth

Join cotton in same st as last part of tr cluster.

3 ch, a joined tr over next 2 sts. Fasten off.

4th Tooth

Join cotton in same st as last part of joined tr.

3 ch, a joined tr over next 2 sts. Fasten off.

5th Tooth

Join cotton in same st as last part of joined tr.

3 ch, a joined tr over next 2 sts. Fasten off.

Large Bottom Fin

Make a magic loop.

Row 1: 2 ch, work 1 htr in circle. Pull circle tight but don’t join. Turn.

Row 2: 2 ch, 2 htr in st, 1 htr in top of ch. Turn.

Row 3: 2 ch, 2 htr in 1^st st, 2 tr in next st, 2 dtr in following st and 1 dtr in top of ch. Turn.

Row 4: 3 ch, 2 tr in 1^st st, 1 tr and 1 htr in next st, 1 htr in following st, 1 dc in each st to end. Turn.

Row 5: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each st to end. Fasten off.

Eyes (Make 2)

Using white make a magic loop.

1 ch, into circle work 8 htr. Pull circle tight and join with a sl st in top of 1^st st. Fasten off.

To Make Up

Weave in ends. Embroider a black dot on each eye.

Stitch the teeth in behind the head.

Sew the head to the body.

Crochet the small bottom fin on the bottom of the shark as pattern below.

Attach the large bottom fin to the shark.

If making a finger puppet stitch the felt to the shark leaving it open between the 2 bottom fins.

Stitch the eyes to the shark.

Small Bottom Fin

Join cotton at bottom of body under 2^nd last tooth.

5 ch, work a cluster of 1 dtr in same st as ch, 1 tr in next st and 1 dtr in following st. Fasten off.

Crochet Shark Accessories

Materials Used

I used blue, pink and green 4 ply crochet cotton.
A crochet hook, I used a 1.25mm hook.
Scissors.
Darning needle to weave in ends.
Sewing thread and a sewing needle to stitch the accessories onto the shark.
A small bead for the centre of the flower.

Glasses

Join cotton to outside loop of one eye.

Work a sl st in the outer loop of each st around first eye.

Join with a sl st into 1^st sl st. 2 ch. Sl st into outer loop of next eye and work a sl st into the outer loop of each st around eye. Join in 1^st st and fasten off.
