As requested by Maria on YouTube I have made a penguin crochet pattern. Here is a quick look at what the finished penguin will look like.

As always I have both US and UK terminology, this page will be using US terminology, for the UK version go to Penguin Crochet Pattern (UK Version).
Penguin Crochet Pattern
Abbreviations
- st – stitch
- sts – stitches
- ch – chain
- sl st – slip stitch
- sc – single crochet
- hdc – half double crochet
- dc – double crochet
- tr – treble crochet
Materials Used
- Small amounts of black, white and orange cotton or wool.
- Crochet hook.
- Scissors.
- A darning needle to weave in your ends.
- Sewing needle.
- Black thread to stitch the eyes on.
- White fabric paint or white cotton for the dot in the centre of the eyes.
Body
Using white cotton make a magic loop.
Row 1: 3 ch, 2 dc, 3 tr, 6 dc, 3 tr, 3 dc, join with a sl st. Pull tight.
Row 2: 3 ch, dc in same place as 3 ch, 2 dc in each of next 2 dc, 2 tr in each of next 3 tr, 2 dc in each of next 6 dc, 2 tr in each of next 3 tr, 2 dc in each of next 3 dc. Join with a sl st in 3rd ch.
Row 3: 3 ch, 1 dc in same place as ch (1 dc in each of next 2 dc, 2 dc in next dc) repeat until you get half way around. Then 1 hdc in next 4 sts, 1 sc in each st to last 4, 4 hdc. Fasten off.
Head
On wrong side join white yarn 3 sts before centre on narrow end.
Row 1: 3 ch, 1 dc in same place, 2 dc in next st, 2 hdc in next st, 1 sc in next st, 2 hdc in next st, 2 dc in each of next 2 sts. Turn.
Row 2: 3 ch, dc cluster over next 5 sts starting in same place as 3 ch, Fasten off. Miss 3 sts, join yarn to next st 3 ch, dc cluster over last 5 sts starting in same place as 3 ch and ending in top of 3 ch. Fasten off.
Around Body
Worked in black.
Leave botton 3 sts free. Join at bottom with black, 1 ch, sc in next 3 sts, 2 hdc in next st, (1 dc, 2 dc in next st) 4 times, dc to 1 st before junction with head, dec dc over next 2 sts, 2 dc, work 2 dc in each st around curve, until 2 sts before centre st. work a joined tr over next 5 sts, work 2 dc in each st around curve, dc to junction with head, dec dc in next 2 sts, 2 dc, (2 dc in next st, 1 dc in following st) 4 times, 1 dc into each st until 7 sts remain, 2 hdc in next st, 3 sc. Leave last 3 sts unworked. Fasten off.
Arm
For penguin’s right arm the cotton is joined at the junction of the neck and the left arm is joined 4 stitches below the neck.
Worked in black.
Join black thread for arm as above instructions.
9 ch, hdc in 3rd ch from hook, dec hdc over next 2 sts, hdc, 2 dc, 2 tr. Join to body. Work the same for other side.
Feet
Start penguin’s right foot on the 3rd last stitch of the black and penguin’s left foot on the 1st black stitch.
Worked in orange.
Join thread as above instructions *3 ch, 1 dc in same place, 3 ch, sl st in same place* sl st into next st, repeat from * to * twice. Fasten off.
Beak
Worked in orange.
5 ch, miss 3 ch, joined dc over next 2 sts. Fasten off. Join thread to bottom of beak in the back of the chain, 3 ch, joined dc over next 2 sts. Fasten off.
Eyes (Make 2)
Make a magic loop.
1 ch, 3 sc in loop, pull tight, sl st in ch. Fasten off.
To make up
Weave in endings. If using cotton for the dot in the middle of the eye sew it in.
Sew eyes on near the top of the white part on each side of the head with a little bit of white showing around. Attach the beak by the centre of the beak just under the centre black part of the head and bend it in half. Put a small dot of fabric paint in the middle of each eye if desired.
