Welcome to my mallard duck crochet pattern. This finished beginner crochet pattern duck will look like this.

Mallard Duck Crochet Pattern
Abbreviations
- st – stitch
- sts – stitches
- ch – chain
- sl st – slip stitch
- sc – single crochet
- hdc – half double crochet
- dc – double crochet
Materials Used
- Green, brown, white and orange cotton or wool, I used 8 ply wool which is light worsted in the US and double knit in the UK.
- A crochet hook, I used a 2.5mm hook.
- Scissors.
- Sewing needle and cotton to stitch the wing to the duck’s body.
- Darning needle to weave in ends.
- Black embroidery cotton or sewing thread to embroider on the eye, or you could use a black bead if you prefer.
Head
Make a magic loop.
Row 1: 2 ch, into circle work 15 dc, pull circle tight and join with a sl st in 1st st.
Row 2: 1 ch, work 1 sc in same st as ch, 1 sc in each of next 2 sts. Fasten off.
Neck
Join white yarn in 1st sc on right side of neck edge.
2 ch, work 1 hdc in same st as ch, 2 hdc in each of next 2 sts. Fasten off.
Body
Join brown yarn in top of ch on right side.
Row 1: 2 ch. 1 hdc in same place as ch, 1 hdc in each st to last st, 2 hdc in last st. Turn.
Row 2: 2 ch. 1 hdc in each st to last st, 2 hdc in last st. Turn.
Row 3: 2 ch. 3 hdc in 1st st, 1 hdc in each st to end. Turn.
Row 4: 2 ch. 1 hdc in each st to last st, 3 hdc in last st. Turn.
Row 5: 2 ch. 3 hdc in 1st st, 1 hdc in each st to last 2 sts, a joined hdc over last 2 sts. Fasten off.
Neatening Row
Join brown yarn at back neck edge.
Sl st into next st, work 1 sc in each st to tail, 3 ch and 1 dc in tail. Fasten off.
Join yarn at bottom of tail.
Work 1 sc in each st around to neck, sl st into last brown st at neck. Fasten off.
Beak
Join orange yarn 2 sts up from neck.
2 ch, work 1 hdc in same st. Fasten off.
Join orange yarn in same st as last hdc.
Row 1: 2 ch, work 1 hdc in each of next 2 sts. Turn.
Row 2: 2 ch, work a joined hdc over both sts. Fasten off.
Wing
Make a magic loop.
Row 1: 2 ch, into circle work 1 hdc, pull circle tight but don’t join. Turn.
Row 2: 2 ch, work 1 hdc in st and 1 hdc in top of ch. Turn.
Row 3: 2 ch. 2 hdc in each st. Turn.
Row 4: 1 ch. 1 sc in 1st st, 1 hdc in next st, 1 dc in following st and 2 dc in last st. Turn.
Row 5: 3 ch, work a dc cluster over all sts. Don’t fasten off.
Neatening Row
Work a sl st in each st around. Fasten off.
To Make Up
Weave in ends. Embroider on an eye or attach a black bead over the centre circle of head.
Stitch wing to body.
