Joining Granny Squares Together Using Single Crochet

Finished cushion using granny squares landscape

For my latest crochet beginner guide I’ll be joining granny squares together using single crochet. I’ll be using this technique and over the coming weeks I’ll be showing you how to make this cushion.

I’ve got a beginner crochet tutorial video at Joining Granny Squares Together Using Single Crochet on my YouTube channel.

This pattern will be using US terminology. If you would like to view the UK version go to Joining Granny Squares Together Using Double Crochet (UK Version).

Joining Granny Squares

With wrong sides together and sides even, join cotton to the corner of two granny squares as shown.

1 ch, work 2 sc into the ch loop of the corner, working through both granny squares.  (Working into the next stitch, through both granny squares, work 1 sc,) repeat into each st to the next corner. Work 2 sc into the corner through both granny squares.  Fasten off.

For the cushion I joined another set of two granny squares together.

Joining the Two Sets of Granny Squares

With wrong sides together and sides and joins even, join cotton to the corner of two granny squares as shown.

Work the same as joining the 2 granny squares together until you get to the stitch before the joins, work 1 sc in next st, work a joined sc in same st as last sc and next st.  Work a sc in same st as last part of the joined sc, continue working 1 sc in each st through both granny squares until you reach the corner.  Into the corner loops work 2 sc.  Fasten off.

To Make Up

Weave in end.

In a fortnight I’ll be showing you how to crochet an edging around the joined granny squares to make a cushion.
