Welcome to my crochet woolly mammoth pattern. This is another request that I received. The finished woolly mammoth applique will look like this.

Woolly Mammoth Crochet Appliqué Pattern
Abbreviations
- st – stitch
- sts – stitches
- ch – chain
- sl st – slip stitch
- dc – double crochet
- htr – half treble crochet
- tr – treble crochet
- dtr – double treble crochet
Materials Used
- Crochet cotton or wool, I used Scheepjes Maxi Sweet Treat 2 ply crochet cotton colours (254) Moon Rock, (406) Soft Beige, (162) Black Coffee, (130) Old Lace, (238) Powder Pink and (106) Snow White.
- A crochet hook, I used a 1mm hook.
- Scissors.
- Darning needle to weave in ends.
- Sewing thread and needle to stitch the woolly mammoth together.
- Black thread to embroider dots on eyes and markings on the trunk if desired.
Size
Medium woolly mammoth (Using 4 ply crochet cotton & a 1.5mm hook)
9cm x 10cm or 3.5” x 4”
Small woolly mammoth (Using 2 ply crochet cotton & a 1mm hook)
7cm x 8.5cm or 2.75” x 3.5”
Body
Using medium brown (Moon Rock) work 3 ch.
Row 1: Miss 1st ch and work 1 dc in each st to end. Turn. (2 sts)
Row 2: 1 ch, work 2 dc in each st. Turn. (4 sts)
Row 3: 1 ch, work 2 dc in 1st st, 1 dc in each st to last st, 2 dc in last st. Turn. (6 sts)
Row 4: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each st to end. Turn. (6 sts)
Row 5: 1 ch, work 2 dc in 1st st, 1 dc in each st to last st, 2 dc in last st. Turn. (8 sts)
Row 6: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each st to end. Turn. (8 sts)
Row 7: 1 ch, work 2 dc in 1st st, 1 dc in each st to last st, 2 dc in last st. Turn. (10 sts)
Row 8: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each st to end. Turn. (10 sts)
Row 9: 1 ch, work 2 dc in 1st st, 1 dc in each st to last st, 2 dc in last st. Turn. (12 sts)
Row 10: 1 ch, work 2 dc in 1st st, 1 dc in each st to last st, 2 dc in last st. Turn. (14 sts)
Row 11: 1 ch, work 2 dc in 1st st, 1 dc in each st to last st, 2 dc in last st. Turn. (16 sts)
Rows 12-18: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each st to end. Turn. (16 sts)
Row 19: 1 ch, work a joined dc over 1st 2 sts, 1 dc in each st to last 2 sts, a joined dc over last 2 sts. Turn. (14 sts)
Row 20: 3 ch, work a joined tr over 1st 2 sts, 1 htr in next st, 1 dc in each st to last 3 sts, 1 htr in following st and a joined tr over last 2 sts. (12 sts) Don’t fasten off.
Neatening Row
1 ch, (1 dc in next st, 2 ch, 1 dc in following st, 3 ch) repeat to end. Sl sl in top of 1st st. Fasten off.
Head and Trunk
Using light brown (Soft Beige) work 4 ch.
Row 1: Miss 1st ch and work 1 dc in each st to end. Turn. (3 sts)
Row 2: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each st to end. Turn. (3 sts)
Row 3: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each st to end. Turn. (3 sts)
Row 4: 1 ch, work 2 dc in 1st st, 1 dc in next st and 2 dc in last st. Turn. (5 sts)
Row 5: 1 ch, work 2 dc in 1st st, 1 dc in each st to last st, 2 dc in last st. Turn. (7 sts)
Rows 6-8: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each st to end. Turn. (7 sts)
Row 9: 1 ch, work 2 dc in 1st st, 1 dc in each st to last st, 2 dc in last st. Turn. (9 sts)
Rows 10-12: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each st to end. Turn. (9 sts)
Row 13: 1 ch, work a joined dc over 1st 2 sts, 1 dc in each st to last 2 sts and a joined dc over last 2 sts. Turn. (7 sts)
Rows 14-15: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each st to end. Turn. (7 sts)
Row 16: 1 ch, work a joined dc over 1st 2 sts, 1 dc in each st to last 2 sts and a joined dc over last 2 sts. Turn. (5 sts)
Rows 17-19: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each st to end. Turn. (5 sts)
Row 20: 1 ch, work a joined dc over 1st 2 sts, 1 dc in each st to last st and 2 dc in last st. 2 ch. Turn. (5 sts + 2 ch)
Row 21: Work 2 dc in 2nd ch from hook, 1 dc in each st to last 2 sts, a joined dc over last 2 sts. Turn. (6 sts)
Row 22: 1 ch, work a joined dc over 1st 3 sts, 1 dc in each st to end. 6 ch.
Row 23: Miss 1st ch, work 1 dc in each of next 3 ch, a joined dc over last 2 ch, sl st in the side of row 21. Don’t fasten off.
Neatening Row
Work 1 sl st in each st to tip of trunk, into tip of trunk work 2 ch, 1 htr, 2 ch, sl st in same st, 2 ch, 1 htr, 2 ch and sl st in same st, continue working a sl st in each st around to beginning of row. Fasten off.
Right Side of Trunk
Join light brown cotton (Soft Beige) 7 stitches down from middle of top.
1 dc in next st, 1 htr in following st, 2 dtr in next st, 1 dtr in following st. Fasten off.
Left Side of Trunk
Join light brown cotton (Soft Beige) across from the last st of right side of trunk.
4 ch, work 1 dtr in same st as ch, 2 dtr in next st, 1 htr in following st, 1 dc in next st, 1 sl st in following st. Fasten off.
Legs (Make 2)
Using light brown (Soft Beige) work 6 ch.
Row 1: Miss 1st ch and work 1 dc in each st to end. Turn. (5 sts)
Row 2: 1 ch, work a joined dc over 1st 2 sts and 1 dc in each st to end. Turn. (4 sts)
Row 3: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each of 1st 2 sts, a joined dc over last 2 sts. Turn. (3 sts)
Rows 4-7: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each st to end. Turn. (3 sts)
Row 8: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each st to end. (3 sts). Don’t fasten off.
Neatening Row
1 ch, work 1 dc in each st around sides and 1 dc, 1 ch and 1 dc in corner sts. Fasten off.
Eyes (make 2)
Using white make a magic loop.
1 ch, work 1 dc, 1 htr, 1 dc and 1 htr in circle. Pull circle tight and join with a sl st in top of 1st st. Fasten off.
Tusks (Make 2)
Using tan (Old Lace) work 18 ch.
Miss 1st ch, work 1 sl st in each of next 3 sts, 1 htr in each of following 2 sts, 2 htr in each of next 4 sts, 1 htr in each of following 2 sts, 1 tr in each of next 3 sts, 2 tr in each of following 2 sts and 1 tr in next st. Fasten off.
Toenails (Make 2)
Using tan (Old Lace) work 4 ch.
Miss 1st ch, work 1 sl st, 1 htr and 1 sl st in each remaining st. Fasten off
Inner Ears (Make 2)
Using light pink (Powder Pink) work 5 ch.
Row 1: Miss 1st st and work 1 dc in each st to end. 2 ch. Turn. (4 sts + 2 ch)
Row 2: Miss 1st ch, work 1 dc in remaining ch and 1 dc in each st to last st, 2 dc in last st. Turn. (6 sts)
Row 3: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each st to last st, 2 dc in last st. 2 ch. Turn. (7 sts + 2 ch)
Row 4: Work 1 sl st in 2nd ch from hook, 1 dc in each st to end. Turn. (1 sl st and 7 dcs)
Row 5: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each of next 6 sts. Turn. (6 sts)
Row 6: 1 ch, work 2 dc in 1st st, 1 dc in each st to end. Turn. (7 sts)
Row 7: 1 ch, work a joined dc over 1st 2 sts, 1 dc in each of next 2 sts, a joined dc over following 2 sts. Turn. 2 ch. (4 sts + 2 ch)
Row 8: Work 1 sl st in 2nd ch from hook, a joined dc over 1st 2 sts and a joined dc over last 2 sts. Turn. (1 sl st and 2 dcs)
Row 9: 1 ch, work a joined dc over the 2 dcs. Fasten off.
Left Outer Ear
Join medium brown cotton (Moon Rock) 3 sts up from top point on ear.
Work 1 sl st in each of next 2 sts, 1 dc in each st around to end of bend. Fasten off.
Right Outer Ear
Join medium brown cotton (Moon Rock) to 1st st of row 1.
1 dc in each st to 6 sts before 1st point, 1 sl st in each of next 3 sts. Fasten off.
Topknot
Using dark brown (Black Coffee) make a magic loop.
Row 1: 1 ch, (work 1 dc in circle, 3 ch, miss 1st ch and sl st in each remaining ch, 2 ch, sl st in 2nd ch from hook) repeat 5 more times. Sl st in top of 1st st. Fasten off.
To Make Up
Weave in ends. Embroider a black dot on each eye.
Stitch the eyes near the top of the head and trunk section.
Attach the tusks to the head and trunk where shown.
Embroider markings on the trunk if desired.
Sew the ears to the sides of the head just above the tusks.
Attach the toenails to the bottom of the legs.
Stitch the legs to the bottom of the body.
Sew the head and trunk section to the body section.
Attach the topknot to the woolly mammoth where shown.
