Welcome to my crochet wattle and gumnut pattern. I’ve designed some wattle and gumnuts to add to the branch of the cockatiel I made recently and added a possum to a branch as well. You could also add some wattle or gumnuts to the branch of my cockatoo applique. This is what the finished wattle and gumnut applique will look like.

Crochet Wattle and Gumnut Branch Pattern
Abbreviations
- st – stitch
- sts – stitches
- ch – chain
- sl st – slip stitch
- sc – single crochet
- hdc – half double crochet
- dc – double crochet
Materials Used
- Any thickness crochet cotton or yarn, I used Scheepjes Maxi Sweet Treat 2 ply crochet cotton colors (254) Moon Rock, (208) Yellow Gold, (786) Fuschia and (391) Deep Ocean Blue.
- A crochet hook, I used a 1mm hook.
- A darning needle to weave in ends.
- Scissors.
- Thread and needle to stitch the pieces to the branch.
- A cockatiel on branch applique and possum applique if desired.
Size
Medium branch (Using 4 ply crochet cotton & a 1.5mm hook)
12cm wide x 13.5cm high or 4.75” wide x 5.25” high
Small branch (Using 2 ply crochet cotton & a 1mm hook)
7cm wide x 11cm high or 2.75” wide x 4.25” high
Gumnut Branch
Branch
Using (254) Moon Rock work 37 ch.
Miss 2 ch, work 1 dc in each of next 2 ch, 1 hdc in each of following 2 ch, 1 sc in each of next 3 ch, 1 hdc in following ch, 1 dc in next ch, 3 ch, sl st in same ch as dc, 1 sc in next ch, 1 hdc in each of following 6 ch, 1 sc in each of next 2 ch, 2 sc in following ch, 1 sc in each of next 5 ch, 2 sc in following ch, 1 sl st in each ch to end. Fasten off.
Open Gumnut Blossoms (I made 6)
Using (208) Yellow Gold, make a magic loop.
1 ch, work 3 sc in the circle. Pull the circle tight and join with a sl st in top of 1st st. Fasten off.
Join (786) Fuschia to back loop only of any stitch.
{ (2 ch, sl st in 2nd ch from hook, sl st in back loop of same st as ch) 2 times, 2 ch, sl st in 2nd ch from hook, sl st in back loop of next st} 3 times. (9 petals) Fasten off.
Gumnuts (I made 6)
Using (254) Moon Rock work some with 6 and some with 7 ch. I left a long tail at the beginning to join them to the branch.
Work 2 hdc in 3rd ch from hook. Fasten off.
Join (786) Fuschia to top of ch.
1 ch, work 1 sc in same place as join, 1 ch, 1 sc in next st, 1 ch, 1 sc in same st, 1 ch, 1 sc in last st. Fasten off.
Leaf (I made 6)
Using (391) Deep Ocean Blue work 8 ch. I left a long tail at the beginning to stitch it to the branch.
Work 1 sc in 2nd ch from hook, 1 hdc in next ch, 1 hdc and 1 dc in following ch, 1 sc in next ch, 1 sl st in following ch. Fasten off.
Stems (I made 2)
Using (254) Moon rock work 10 ch leaving a long tail to stitch them to the branch.
Miss 1st ch, 1 sc in each of next 3 ch, sl st in following ch, 5 ch, miss 1st ch, 1 sc in each of next 4 ch, 4 ch, miss 1st ch, 1 sc in each of next 3 ch, sl st in the side of original ch. Fasten off.
To Make Up
Weave in ends. Stitch the possum to the branch if desired.
Attach gumnut blossoms to the stems.
Sew the stems to the branch.
Stitch the gumnuts to the branch.
Attach the leaves to the branch.
Wattle Branch
Wattle (I made 25)
Using (208) Yellow Gold, make a magic loop. I left a longer tail at the beginning to join it to the stem.
1 ch, work 1 sc in circle, sl st in the circle. Pull the circle tight and join with a sl st in ch. Fasten off.
Leaf (I made 6)
Using (391) Deep Ocean Blue work 8 ch. I left a long tail at the beginning to stitch it to the branch.
Work 1 sc in 2nd ch from hook, 1 hdc in next ch, 1 hdc and 1 dc in following ch, 1 sc in next ch, 1 sl st in following ch. Fasten off.
Stems (I made 5)
Using (254) Moon Rock and leaving a long tail at one end, work one each with 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9 ch. Fasten off.
To Make Up
Weave in ends. Stitch the cockatiel to the branch if desired. Attach wattle to the stems.
Sew the stems to the branch.
Stitch the leaves to the branch.
And there’s the finished wattle and gumnut appliqués.
