Crochet Unicorn Pattern (UK Version)

Today I’ll be showing you how to crochet this unicorn appliqué.

There is also a crochet video tutorial for this pattern available on my YouTube channel as well. The video was longer than normal this week so I had to split it up into two parts, Crochet Unicorn Tutorial (Part 1) and Crochet Unicorn Tutorial (Part 2).

Crochet Unicorn Pattern

Abbreviations

st – stitch
sts – stitches
ch – chain
sl st – slip stitch
dc – double crochet
htr – half treble crochet
tr – treble crochet
dtr – double treble crochet

Materials Used

White cotton or wool and small amounts of black, grey, 4 colours for tail and mane, a colour for around the horn and a bright colour for flowers if desired.
Crochet hook.
Scissors.
Thread to sew together.
Sewing needle.
Darning needle to weave in ends.
Black cotton to embroider on the mouth.
Beads if desired to sew on flowers.

Head

Make a magic loop.

Row 1: 3 ch, work 8 tr in circle, pull circle tight but don’t join. Turn.
Row 2: 3 ch, work 1 tr in same place as ch and 2 tr in each st across to end, work 1 tr in top of 3 ch from previous row. Turn.
Row 3: 3 ch, work 1 tr in same place as ch (1 tr in each of next 2 sts and 2 tr in following st) repeat across to end of row, work 1 tr in top of 3 ch.

Work along the flat side of the half circle

Row 1: 2 ch, work 1 htr in each st across flat side of half circle. (I have 16 sts). Turn.
Row 2: 2 ch, 1 joined htr over 1^st 2 sts, 1 htr in each st to last 2 sts, 1 joined htr over last 2 sts. Turn.
Row 3: 2 ch, 1 htr in each st across. Turn.
Row 4: 2 ch, 1 joined htr over 1^st 2 sts, 1 htr in each st to last 2 sts, 1 joined htr over last 2 sts. Turn.
Row 5: 2 ch, 1 htr in each st across. Turn.
Row 6: 2 ch, 1 joined htr over 1^st 2 sts, 1 htr in each st to last 2 sts, 1 joined htr over last 2 sts. Turn.
Row 7: 2 ch, 1 htr in each st across.

Neatening Row

1 ch, work 1 dc in each st around, sl st into ch. Fasten off.

Inner Ears

Join Cotton 1 st before corner st of top of head.

Row 1: 2 ch, 1 htr in same st as ch, 1 htr in each of next 2 sts. Turn.
Row 2: 2 ch, a htr cluster over all sts. Fasten off.

Outer Ears

Join cotton the st before the ear.
Work a htr in each st around the ear. Sl st into head. Fasten off.

Eyes (Make 2)

Make a magic loop.
Work 1 ch and 5 dc into circle. Pull circle tight and sl st into ch. Fasten off.

Horn

11 ch.

Miss 1^st ch, work 1 sl st into each of next 2 sts, 1 dc into each of following 2 sts, 1 htr into each of next 2 sts, and 1 tr into each st to end. Fasten off.

Stitch 3 stripes across the horn for the spirals.

Neatening

Join contrast colour to horn.
Work 1 sl st into each st. Fasten off.

Body

6 ch.

Row 1: Miss 1^st ch, work 1 dc in each st to end. Turn.
Rows 2-3: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each st to end. Turn.
Row 4: 1 ch, 2 dc in 1^st st, 1 dc in each st to end. Work 16 ch.
Row 5: Work 2 dc in 2^nd ch from hook, 1 dc in each st to end. Turn.
Row 6: 1 ch, 2 dc in 1^st st, 1 dc in each st to last st, 2 dc in last st. Turn.
Row 7: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each st to end. Turn.
Row 8: 1 ch, 1 dc in each st to last st, 2 dc in last st. Turn.
Row 9: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each st to end. Turn.
Row 10: 1 ch, 1 joined dc over 1^st 2 sts, 1 dc in each st to last 2 sts, 1 joined dc over last 2 sts. Turn.
Row 11: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each st to end. Turn.
Row 12: 1 ch, 1 joined dc over 1^st 2 sts, 1 dc in each st to last 2 sts, 1 joined dc over last 2 sts. Turn.
Row 13: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each st to end. Turn.
Row 14: 1 ch, 1 joined dc over 1^st 2 sts, 1 dc in each st to last 2 sts, 1 joined dc over last 2 sts. Turn.
Row 15: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each st to end. Turn.
Row 16: 1 ch, 2 dc in 1^st st, 1 dc in each st to last st, 2 dc in last st. Turn.
Row 17: 1 ch, 2 dc in 1^st st, 1 dc in each of next 4 sts. Turn.
Row 18: 1 ch, 1 joined dc over 1^st 2 sts, 1 dc in each st to end. Turn.
Row 19: 1 ch, 2 dc in 1^st st, 1 dc in each st to last 2 sts, 1 joined dc over last 2 sts. Turn.
Row 20: 1 ch, 1 joined dc over 1^st 2 sts, 1 dc in each st to end. Turn.
Row 21: 1 ch 1 dc in each st to end. Turn.
Row 22: 1 ch, 1 dc in each st to end. Fasten off.

Front Leg

Join cotton 7 sts back from front of body.

Row 1: 1 ch, 1 joined dc over 1^st 2 sts, 1 dc in each st to last st, 2 dc in last st. Turn.
Row 2: 1 ch, 2 dc in 1^st st, 1 dc in each st to last 2 sts, 1 joined dc over last 2 sts. Turn.
Row 3: 1 ch, 1 dc in each st to end. Turn.
Row 4: 1 ch, 2 dc in 1^st st, 1 dc in each st to last 2 sts, 1 joined dc over last 2 sts. Turn.
Row 5: 1 ch, 1 dc in each of next 2 sts, 1 htr in each of following 2 sts, 1 tr in each remaining st. Turn.
Row 6: 1 ch, 1 dc in each st to last 2 sts, 1 joined dc over last 2 sts. Don’t fasten off.

Neatening Row

1 ch, work 1 dc in each st down leg, into tummy work 1 dc in each of 1^st 2 sts, 1 htr in next st, 1 tr in following st, 1 htr in next and then 1 dc in each st around to start of back, work 1 dc in each of next 2 sts, 1 htr in next st, 1 tr in following st, 1 htr in each of next 2 sts, 1 dc in each st to beginning of row. Sl st into ch. Fasten off.

Hoof (For each leg)

Join cotton to first st of bottom of leg.

Row 1: 1 ch, 1 dc in each st across bottom of leg. Turn.
Row 2: 1 ch, 1 dc in each st across. Turn.
Row 3: 1 ch, 1 dc in each st across. Fasten off.

Far Back Leg

4 ch.

Row 1: Miss 1^st ch, 1 dc in each ch to end. Turn.
Rows 2-3: 1 ch 1 dc in each st to end. Turn.
Row 4: 1 ch, 2 dc in 1^st st, 1 dc in each st to end. Turn.
Row 5: 1 ch 1 dc in each st to end. Turn.
Row 6: 1 ch 1 dc in each st to end. Don’t fasten off.

Neatening Row

Work 1 sl st in each st around to beginning of last row of leg. Fasten off.

Far Front Leg

4 ch.

Row 1: Miss 1^st ch, 1 dc in each ch to end. Turn.
Row 2: 1 ch, 1 joined dc over 1^st 2 sts, 2 htr in next st. Turn.
Row 3: 2 ch, 2 htr in 1^st st, 1 joined dc over remaining 2 sts. Turn.
Row 4: 1 ch, 1 joined dc over 1^st 2 sts, 2 htr in next st. Turn.
Row 5: 2 ch, 2 htr in 1^st st, 1 joined dc over remaining 2 sts. Turn.
Row 6: 1 ch, 1 joined dc over 1^st 2 sts, 2 htr in next st. 1 htr in top of 2 ch. Turn.
Row 7: 1 ch 1 dc in each st across. Don’t fasten off.

Neatening Row

Work 1 sl st in each st around to beginning of last row of leg. Fasten off.

Tail Piece (Make 4 in different colours)

18 ch.

Miss 1^st ch, 1 dc in next st, 1 htr in following st, tr cluster over next 3 sts, joined tr over next 2 sts, 1 tr in each of next 2 sts, 1 htr in each of next 4 sts, 3 htr in next st and 1 dc into each st to last st, 1 sl st in last st. Fasten off leaving a tail to join to unicorn.

Back Head Piece

12 ch.

Miss 1^st st, 1 dc in next st, 1 htr in following st, 2 htr in next st, 1 htr in each of next 3 sts, 1 joined tr over next 2 sts, 1 tr in next st, 1 htr in following st, 1 dc. Fasten off.

Side Head Piece

8 ch.

Miss 1^st st, 1 sl st in next st, 1 joined dc over following 2 sts, 1 htr in next st, 1 tr in following st, 2 dtr in each of remaining sts, 4 ch sl st in same place as last dtr. Fasten off.

Front Head Piece

15 ch

Miss 1^st st, 1 sl st in each of next 2 sts, 1 dc in next st, 3 htr in next st, 1 htr in following st, 4 joined tr over next 8 sts, 1 tr in last st, 3 ch, sl st in same place as last tr. Fasten off.

Mane

19 ch.

Miss 1^st st, sl st in each of next 2 sts, 2 dc in next st, 2 htr in next st, joined htr over next 2 sts, 1 htr in each of next 2 sts, 1 tr in each of next 5 sts, 1 htr in each of next 4 sts, sl st in last st. Fasten off.

2nd Mane

10 ch.

Miss 1^st st, 1 sl st in next st, 1 dc in following st, 1 htr in each of next 2 sts, 1 tr in next st, 1 htr in each of next 2 sts, 1 dc in next st and 1 sl st in last st. Fasten off.

3rd Mane

15 ch.

Miss 1^st st, sl st in next st, 1 dc in next st, 2 htr in following st, 1 tr in each of next 2 sts, tr cluster over next 3 sts, 1 tr in each of next 2 sts, 1 htr in each of next 2 sts, 1 dc in next st, 1 sl st in last st. Fasten off.

4th Mane

10 ch.

Miss 1^st st, sl st in next st, 1 dc in following st, 2 htr in next st, joined tr over next 2 sts, 1 htr in each of next 2 sts, 1 dc in next st and 1 sl st in last st. Fasten off.

Flower (Make 3)

Make a magic loop.

1 ch, 1 dc into circle, (3 ch, 1 dc into circle) 5 times, pull circle tight and sl st into ch. Fasten off.

To Make Up

Weave in ends. Embroider a white spot on each eye.

Attach eyes to head where shown and embroider eyelashes if desired.

Embroider on a mouth and nostrils.

Sew the head onto the body.

Attach the far legs to the body.

Sew the back head piece to the head where shown.

Position the front head piece in front of the back head piece and stitch on.

Attach the side head piece.

Sew the horn on in the middle of the head.

Stitch the tail pieces to the back of the unicorn as shown.

If you would like the edging on the mane, cut pieces of cotton about 2 inches long and thread through each st on the backside. (I zigzag with a very small stitch on my machine over the join to make sure it stays secure).
