Crochet Toucan Pattern (UK Version)

Welcome to my crochet toucan pattern. This pattern was another request. This is what the finished toucan applique will look like.

Crochet Toucan Pattern

Abbreviations 

Materials Used

Size

Large toucan (Using 8 ply yarn & a 3mm hook)

17cm wide x 17cm high or 6.5” wide x 6.5” high

Medium toucan (Using 4 ply crochet cotton & a 1.5mm hook)

11cm wide x 13.5cm high or 4.25” wide x 5.25” high

Small toucan (Using 2 ply crochet cotton & a 1mm hook)

9cm wide x 10.5cm high or 3.5” wide x 4” high

Head & Body

Using (110) Black work 4 ch.

 

Row 1: Miss 1st ch, work 1 dc in each of next 2 ch, 1 htr in last ch. Turn. (3 sts)

Row 2: 2 ch, work 2 htr and 1 dc in 1st st, 1 dc in each st to end. Turn. (5 sts)

Row 3: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each st to last st, 2 dc in last st. Turn. (6 sts)

Row 4: 1 ch, work 2 dc in 1st st, 1 dc in each st to end. 4 ch (7 sts + 4 ch)

Row 5: Sl st in 2nd ch from hook, 1 dc in next ch, 1 htr in the last ch, 1 dc in each st to last st, 2 dc in last st. Turn. (11 sts)

Row 6: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each of 1st 7 sts. Turn. (7 sts)

Rows 7-10: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each st. Turn. (7 sts)

Row 11: 1 ch, work 2 dc in 1st st, 1 dc in each st to end. 3 ch. (8 sts + 3 ch)

Row 12: Miss 1st ch, work 1 dc in each remaining ch, 1 dc in each st to last st, 2 dc in last st. Turn. (11 sts)

Row 13: 1 ch, work 2 dc in 1st st, 1 dc in each st to end. Turn. (12 sts)

Row 14: 1 ch, work a joined dc over 1st 2 sts, 1 dc in each st to last st, 2 htr in last st. Turn. (12 sts)

Row 15: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each st. Turn. (12 sts)

Row 16: 1 ch, work a joined dc over 1st 2 sts, 1 dc in each st to last st, 2 htr in last st. Turn. (12 sts)

Row 17: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each st. Turn. (12 sts)

Row 18: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each st to last st, 2 htr in last st. Turn. (13 sts)

Row 19: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each of 1st 8 sts, 1 htr in each st to end. Turn. (13 sts)

Row 20: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each st. Turn. (13 sts)

Row 21: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each st to last 2 sts, a joined dc over last 2 sts. Turn. (12 sts)

Row 22: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each st. Turn. (12 sts)

Row 23: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each st to last 2 sts, a joined dc over last 2 sts. Turn. (11 sts)

Row 24: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each st. Turn. (11 sts)

Row 25: 1 ch, work a joined dc over 1st 2 sts, 1 dc in each st to last 2 sts, a joined dc over last 2 sts. Turn. (9 sts)

Row 26: 1 ch, work a joined dc over 1st 2 sts, 1 dc in each st to end. Turn. (8 sts)

Rows 27-28: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each st. Turn. (8 sts)

Row 29: 1 ch, work a joined dc over 1st 2 sts, 1 dc in each of next 4 sts, a joined dc over last 2 sts. Turn. (6 sts)

Row 30: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each st to last st, 2 dc in last st. Turn. (7 sts)

Row 31: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each st to last 2 sts, a joined dc over last 2 sts. Turn. (6 sts)

Row 32: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each st. Don’t turn or fasten off.

Neatening Row

Work 1 sl st in each st to bottom of the chain from row 4. Fasten off.

Beak

Join (281) Tangerine to 1st st in the side of the chain from row 4 where shown.

Row 1: Work 1 dc in each of 1st 5 sts along the side of the head. Turn. (5 sts)

Row 2: 2 ch, work 1 htr in 1st st, 1 dc in each of next 3 sts, 2 dc in join, sl st in next st in the side of ch, sl st in point of ch. Turn. (6 sts) I work the sl sts from right side.

Row 3: Work 2 dc in join, 1 dc in each st to end. Turn. (8 sts)

Row 4: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each st. Turn. (8 sts)

Row 5: 1 ch, work a joined dc over 1st 2 sts, 1 dc in each st to end. Turn. (7 sts)

Row 6: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each st. Turn. (7 sts)

Row 7: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each of 1st 5 sts, a joined dc over last 2 sts. Turn. (6 sts)

Row 8: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each st. Turn. (6 sts)

Row 9: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each of 1st 4 sts, a joined dc over last 2 sts. Turn. (5 sts)

Rows 10-12: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each st. Turn. (5 sts)

Row 13: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each of 1st 3 sts, a joined htr over last 2 sts. Turn. (4 sts)

Row 14: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each st. Turn. (4 sts)

Row 15: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each of 1st 2 sts, a joined htr over last 2 sts. Turn. (3 sts)

Row 16: 3 ch, work a joined tr, htr and dc over the 3 sts. Fasten off.

Neatening Row

Join (281) Tangerine to the 1st st of the beak.

Work 1 sl st in each st around the beak. Fasten off.

Body Neatening

Join (110) Black to stitch after the top of the beak.

Work 1 sl st in each st to the last st of the side of the body. Don’t turn or fasten off.

Tail

10 ch, miss 2 ch, work 1 htr in each remaining ch, sl st in 1st st along the bottom of the body, (12 ch, miss 2 ch, work 1 htr in each remaining ch, sl st in next st) 2 times, (13 ch, miss 2 ch, work 1 htr in each remaining ch, sl st in next st) 2 times, 13 ch, miss 2 ch, work 1 htr in each remaining ch, sl st in last st of body. Fasten off, leaving a long tail to weave the tail feathers together.

Breast

Using (106) Snow White work 5 ch.

 

Row 1: Work 2 dc in 2nd ch from hook, 1 dc in each st to last st, 2 dc in last st. (6 sts)

Row 2: 1 ch, work 2 dc in 1st st, 1 dc in each st to last st, 2 dc in last st. Turn. (8 sts)

Row 3: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each st. Turn. (8 sts)

Row 4: 1 ch, work a joined dc over 1st 2 sts, 1 dc in each st to end. Turn. (7 sts)

Row 5: 1 ch, work a joined dc over 1st 2 sts, 1 dc in each st to end. Turn. (6 sts)

Row 6: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each st. Turn. (6 sts)

Row 7: 1 ch, work a joined dc over 1st 2 sts, 1 dc in each st to end. Turn. (5 sts)

Row 8: Sl st in 2nd st, 1 ch, work 1 dc in same st as ch, 1 dc in each st to end. Turn. (4 dc)

Row 9: 2 ch, work a joined htr over 1st 2 sts, 1 dc in each of last 2 sts. Turn. (3 sts)

Row 10: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each st. Don’t turn or fasten off.

Neatening Row

1 ch, work 1 dc in each st to the beginning of the last row. Fasten off.

Eye Area

Join (281) Tangerine to 1st st at the top of the breast.

Row 1: 1 ch, work 1 dc in same st as ch, 1 dc in each of last 2 sts. Turn. (3 sts)

Row 2: 1 ch, work a joined dc over 1st 2 sts and a joined dc over same st as last part of joined dc and last st. Turn. (2 sts)

Row 3: 1 ch, work a joined dc over the 2 sts. Fasten off.

Beak Marking

Using (110) Black make a magic loop.

 

Row 1: 1 ch, work 2 dc in circle. Pull the circle tight but don’t join. Turn. (2 sts)

Rows 2-3: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each st. Turn. (2 sts)

Row 4: 1 ch, work a joined dc over the 2 sts. 3 ch. (1 st + 3 ch)

Row 5: Work 1 sl st in 2nd ch from hook, 1 dc in last ch, sl st in row 4. Don’t turn or fasten off.

Neatening Row

Work 1 sl st in each st to the ch. Fasten off.

Branch

Using (254) Moon Rock work 40 ch.

 

Miss 2 ch, work 1 tr in each of next 11 ch, 2 tr in each of following 2 ch, 2 htr in next ch, 1 htr in each of following 18 ch, 1 dc in each ch to end. Fasten off.

Claws (Make 2)

Using (242) Metal Gray work 6 ch.

 

Miss 1st ch, work 1 sl st in each of next 3 ch, 4 ch, miss 1st ch, work 1 sl st in each of next 3 ch, 3 ch, miss 1st ch, work 1 sl st in each of next 2 ch and in last sl st of 1st claw, 1 dc in each remaining ch. Fasten off.

To Make Up

Weave in ends. Stitch the beak marking to the end of the beak.

Weave the tail feathers together, leaving the last few stitches unwoven.

Sew the bead in the middle of the eye area.

Attach the breast to the bird.

Sew the branch across the bird.

Stitch the claws over the branch where shown.

And there’s the finished toucan applique. I’ve also made it in different sizes.
