Crochet Standing Flamingo Pattern (UK Version)

Welcome to my crochet standing flamingo pattern. This pattern was another request. This is what the finished standing flamingo applique will look like.

Crochet Standing Flamingo Pattern

Abbreviations

Materials Used

Size 

Large flamingo (Using 8 ply yarn & a 3mm hook)

28cm wide x 30cm high or 11” wide x 11.75” high

Medium Flamingo (Using 4 ply crochet cotton & a 1.5mm hook)

19cm wide x 16cm high or 7.5” wide x 6.25” high

Small Flamingo (Using 2 ply crochet cotton & a 1mm hook)

14cm wide x 15cm high or 5.5” wide x 6” high

Beak

Using (110) Black make a magic loop.

Row 1:  1 ch, work 1 dc in the circle.  Pull the circle tight.  Turn.  (1 st)

Row 2:  1 ch, work 2 dc in st.  Turn.  (2 sts)

Row 3:  1 ch, work 1 dc in each st.  Turn.  (2 sts)

Row 4:  1 ch, work 2 dc in 1st st, 1 dc in last st.  Turn.  (3 sts)

Row 5:  1 ch, work 1 dc in 1st st, join in (398) Colonial Rose leaving a long tail for the neatening row and work over it to the side, leave the Black where it is, 1 dc in next st, 2 dc in last st.  Turn.  (4 sts)

Row 6:  1 ch, work 1 dc in each of 1st 3 sts, change to Black, 1 dc in last st.  Turn.  (4 sts)

Row 7:  1 ch, work 1 dc in 1st st, change to Colonial Rose, 1 dc in each of next 2 sts, join in (222) Tulip and leave a tail for the neatening row, 1 dc in last st.  Turn.  (4 sts)

Row 8:  1 ch, work 2 dc in 1st st, 1 dc in next st, change to Colonial Rose, a joined dc over last 2 sts.  Turn.  (4 sts)

Row 9:  Change to (222) Tulip, 1 ch work a joined dc over 1st 2 sts, 1 dc in next st, join in (786) Fuchsia, 2 dc in last st.  Turn.  (4 sts)

Row 10:  1 ch, work 2 dc in 1st st, 1 dc in next st, change to Tulip and work over the Fuchsia, 1 dc in next st, change to Fuchsia and work over the Tulip to end of the row, 1 dc in last st.  Turn.  (5 sts)

I cut off the Colonial Rose, Tulip and Black leaving tails for the neatening row, leaving a longer tail of Black.

Head

Row 11:  1 ch, work 1 dc in each st.  Turn.  (5 sts)

Row 12:  1 ch, work 2 dc in 1st st, 1 dc in next st, 1 htr in each of last 3 sts.  Turn.  (6 sts)

Row 13:  1 ch, work a joined dc over 1st 2 sts, 1 dc in each st to end.  Turn.  (5 sts)

Row 14:  1 ch, work 2 dc in 1st st, 1 dc in next st, a joined dc over last 3 sts.  Turn.  (4 sts)

Row 15:  1 ch, work a joined dc over 1st 2 sts, 1 dc in next st, 2 dc in last st.  Turn.  (4 sts)

Row 16:  1 ch, work 1 dc in 1st st, a joined htr over next 2 sts, miss the last st.  Turn.  (2 sts)

Row 17:  2 ch, work 1 htr in 1st st, 1 dc in last st.  Turn.  (2 sts)

Row 18:  1 ch, work 1 dc in 1st st, 1 tr in last st.  Turn.  (2 sts)

Row 19:  3 ch, work 1 tr in 1st st, 1 dc in last st.  Turn.  (2 sts)

Row 20:  1 ch, work, 1 dc in 1st st, 1 tr in last st.  Turn.  (2 sts)

Rows 21-25:  1 ch, work 1 dc in each st.  Turn.  (2 sts)

Row 26:  1 ch, work 1 dc in 1st st, 1 htr in last.  Turn.  (2 sts)

Rows 27-29:  1 ch, work 1 dc in each st.  Turn.  (2 sts)

Row 30:  1 ch, work 1 dc in 1st st, 2 htr in last st.  Turn.  (3 sts)

Rows 31-34: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each st.  Turn.  (3 sts)

Row 35:  1 ch, work 1 dc in 1st st, 1 htr in next st, 1 tr in last st.  Turn.  (3 sts)

Row 36:  1 ch, work 1 dc in each st.  Turn.  (3 sts)

Row 37:  1 ch, work 1 dc in 1st st, 1 htr in each of last 2 sts.  Turn.  (3 sts)

Row 38:  1 ch, work 1 dc in each st.  Turn.  (3 sts)

Row 39:  1 ch, work 1 dc in 1st st, 1 htr in next st, 1 tr in last st.  Turn.  (3 sts)

Row 40:  2 ch, work 2 htr in 1st st, 1 dc in each of last 2 sts.  Turn.  (4 sts)

Body

Row 42:  1 ch, work 1 dc in each st.  5 ch.  (4 sts + 5 ch)

Row 43:  Work 2 dc in 2nd ch from hook, 1 dc in each remaining ch, 1 dc in each of next 3 sts, 2 dc in last st.  Turn.  (10 sts)

Row 44: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each st to last st, 2 dc and 1 htr in last st.  Turn.  (12 sts)

Row 45:  2 ch, work 1 htr and 2 dc in 1st st, 1 dc in each st to end.  Turn.  (14 sts)

Row 46:  1 ch, work 1 dc in each st to last st, 2 htr in last st.  Turn.  (15 sts)

Row 56:  Work 1 dc in 2nd ch from hook, 1 dc in each st to last 2 sts, a joined dc over last 2 sts.  Turn.  (18 sts)

Row 59:  1 ch, work 1 dc in each of 1st 15 sts, a joined dc over next 2 sts, miss last st.  Turn.  (16 sts)

Row 60:  1 ch, work a joined dc over 1st 2 sts, 1 dc in each st to end.  Turn.  (15 sts)

Row 61:  1 ch, work a joined dc over 1st 2 sts, 1 dc in each st to end.  Turn.  (14 sts)

Row 62:  1 ch, work a joined dc over 1st 2 sts, 1 dc in each st to end.  Turn.  (13 sts)

Row 63:  1 ch, work 1 dc in each st.  Turn.  (13 sts)

Row 64:  1 ch, work a joined dc over 1st 2 sts, 1 dc in each st to end.  Turn.  (12 sts)

Row 65:  1 ch, work 1 dc in each st.  Turn.  (12 sts)

Row 66:  1 ch, work a joined dc over 1st 2 sts, 1 dc in each st to end.  Turn.  (11 sts)

Row 67:  1 ch, work a joined dc over 1st 2 sts, 1 dc in each st to the last 2 sts, a joined dc over the last 2 sts.  Turn.  (9 sts)

Row 68:  1 ch, work 1 dc in each st.  Turn.  (9 sts)

Row 69:  1 ch, work 1 dc in each st to last 2 sts, a joined dc over last 2 sts.  Turn.  (8 sts)

Row 70:  1 ch, work a joined dc over 1st 2 sts, 1 dc in each st to end.  Turn.  (7 sts)

Row 71:  1 ch, work 1 dc in each st to last 2 sts, a joined dc over last 2 sts.  Turn.  (6 sts)

Row 72:  1 ch, work a joined dc over 1st 2 sts, 1 dc in each of the next 2 sts, a joined dc over the last 2 sts.  Turn.  (4 sts)

Row 73:  1 ch, work 1 dc in each st.  Turn.  (4 sts)

Row 74:  1 ch, work a joined dc over 1st 2 sts and a joined dc over last 2 sts.  Turn.  (2 sts)

Row 75:  1 ch, work 1 dc in each st.  Turn.  (2 sts)

Row 76:  1 ch, work a joined dc over the 2 sts.  Don’t turn or fasten off.

Neatening Row

Using the colours of the piece, work sl sts in each st around working joined sl sts in bends where needed to keep the shape.  Fasten off.

Tail

Join (222) Tulip to the top end of the tail where shown.

7 ch.

Row 1:  Miss 1st ch, work 1 dc in each remaining ch, sl st in same st as join, 10 ch, miss 1st ch, 1 dc in each remaining ch and 1 dc in each st of the neatening row along the top of back to point near the front of the back where shown.  Turn.

Row 2:  1 ch, working into the back loop only work 1 dc in each st to last st before sts worked on ch.  Turn.

Row 3:  Sl st in each of 1st 6 sts, 5 ch, work 1 dc in 2nd ch from hook, 1 htr in next ch, 1 tr in following ch, 2 tr in last ch, working in front loop only work 1 dc in each of next 3 sts, 1 htr in each of following 2 sts, 1 tr in each st to last 2 sts, a joined tr over last 2 sts.  Turn.

Feathers

We all have different tension, so check your chain for the feathers to make sure they will reach almost to the bottom of the body and adjust if needed.

Row 4:  Sl st in front loop only in each of 1st 5 sts, 16 ch, miss 2 ch, work 1 htr in each of next 8 ch, 1 tr in each remaining ch, sl st in front loop only of each of next 3 sts, 15 ch, miss 2 ch, 1 htr in each of next 7 ch, 1 tr in each remaining ch, sl st in front loop only of each of next 3 sts, 14 ch, miss 2 ch, 1 htr in each of next 7 ch, 1 tr in each remaining ch, sl st in front loop of each of next 3 sts, 11 ch, miss 2 ch, 1 htr in each of next 5 ch, 1 tr in each remaining ch, sl st in next st.  Fasten off.

Join Colonial Rose 2 sts before 1st feather where shown.

16 ch, miss 2 ch, work 1 htr in each of next 7 ch, 1 tr in each remaining ch, sl st in back loop in 2nd st, 16 ch, miss 2 ch, 1 htr in each of next 7 ch, 1 tr in each remaining ch, sl st in back loop only of 2nd st, 14 ch, miss 2 ch, 1 htr in each of next 6 ch, 1 tr in each remaining ch, sl st in back loop only of 2nd st, 12 ch, miss 2 ch, 1 htr in each of next 5 ch, 1 tr in each remaining ch, sl st in back loop of 2nd st.  Fasten off.

Join (222) Tulip to 1st st of the tail section.

1 dc in each st to 1st feather, work enough ch to stitch across the top of feathers.  Fasten off leaving a long tail to stitch the ch down.

Leg

Join (254) Moon Rock where shown and work 35 ch.

Miss 1 ch, work 1 sl st in each of next 3 ch, 1 dc in following ch, 3 dc in next ch, 1 dc in each of following 12 ch, 1 htr, 1 tr and 1 htr in next ch, 1 dc in each ch until 5 ch left, 1 htr in each of following 3 ch, a joined htr over last 2 ch, sl st in st next to join.  Fasten off.

To Make Up

Weave in ends.  Stitch the tail part down and the chain across the top of the wing.

Sew the feathers down if desired.  Add a white bead for the eye or embroider on an eye.

Add a black dot in the centre of the eye and embroider black markings on the beak if desired.

And there’s the finished standing flamingo appliqué. I’ve also made it in different sizes.
