Welcome to my crochet possum pattern. This pattern was another request. This is what the finished possum applique will look like.

Crochet Possum Pattern
Abbreviations
- st – stitch
- sts – stitches
- ch – chain
- sl st – slip stitch
- dc – double crochet
- htr – half treble crochet
- tr – treble crochet
Materials Used
- Any thickness crochet cotton or yarn, I used Scheepjes Maxi Sweet Treat 2 ply crochet cotton colours (393) Charcoal, (074) Mercury, (106) Snow White, (222) Tulip, (110) Black and (238) Powder Pink for the claws if desired, you could use Tulip instead.
- A crochet hook, I used a 1mm hook.
- A darning needle to weave in ends.
- A pair of scissors.
- 2 black beads for the eyes.
- Thread and needle to stitch the possum together.
- White fabric paint or white thread for the white dot in the centre of the bead.
Size
Large possum (Using 8 ply yarn & a 3mm hook)
13.5cm wide x 12cm high or 5.5” wide x 4.5” high
Medium possum (Using 4 ply crochet cotton & a 1.5mm hook)
10.5cm wide x 8cm high or 4” wide x 3” high
Small possum (Using 2 ply crochet cotton & a 1mm hook)
7cm wide x 6cm high or 2.75” wide x 2.5” high
Head
Using (074) Mercury work 4 ch.
Row 1: Miss 1st ch, work 1 dc in each remaining ch. Turn. (3 sts)
Row 2: 1 ch, work 2 dc in 1st st, 1 dc in next st, 2 dc in last st. Turn. (5 sts)
Row 3: 1 ch, work 2 dc in 1st st, join in (106) Snow White, 1 dc in each remaining st. Turn. (6 sts)
Row 4: 1 ch, work 2 dc in 1st st, 1 dc in each of next 2 sts, change to Mercury, 1 dc in each of following 2 sts, 2 dc in last st. Turn. (8 sts)
Row 5: 2 ch, work 1 htr in 1st st, 1 dc in next st, change to Snow White, 1 dc in each st to end. Turn. (8 sts)
Row 6: 1 ch, work a joined dc over 1st 2 sts, 1 dc in each of the next 3 sts, change to Mercury, 1 dc in the next st, a joined dc over the last 2 sts. Turn. (6 sts)
Row 7: 1 ch, work a joined dc over 1st 2 sts, change to Snow White, work 1 dc in each of the next 2 sts, a joined dc over last 2 sts. Turn. (4 sts)
Row 8: Sl st into 1st 2 sts, 1 ch, work a joined dc over same st as last sl st and next st. Fasten off.
Neatening Row
Join (393) Charcoal to the top of the head where shown.
1 ch, work 1 sl st in each st around. Leave cotton joined to use for around the ear.
Right Ear
Join (222) Tulip to st down from the top where shown.
4 ch, l sl st in 2nd ch from hook, 1 htr in next st, 1 ch, sl st in same st as htr. Fasten off.
Around Ear
Using the Charcoal left from the head neatening row, work 1 dc in each st around the ear, sl st in the head. Fasten off.
Left Ear
Join (222) Tulip to st down from the top on the wrong side where shown.
4 ch, l sl st in 2nd ch from hook, 1 htr in next st, 1 ch, sl st in same st as htr. Fasten off.
Around Ear
Join (393) Charcoal to the bottom of the ear.
Work 1 dc in each st around the ear. Sl st in the head. Fasten off.
Blaze
Using (393) Charcoal make a magic loop.
Row 1: 2 ch, work 1 htr in the circle. Pull the circle tight. Turn. (1 st)
Row 2: 1 ch, work 1 dc in st. Turn. (1 st)
Row 3: 1 ch, work 3 dc in st. Don’t turn or fasten off.
Neatening Row
Work 1 sl st in each st to 1st st of row 3. Fasten off.
Eye Area (Make 2)
Using (393) Charcoal make a magic loop.
2 ch, work a joined htr in the circle. Pull the circle tight. 2 ch. Fasten off, leaving a long tail to attach it to the head.
Nose
Using (222) Tulip make a magic loop.
1 ch, work 1 dc, 1 ch and 1 sl st in the circle. Pull the circle tight and fasten off, leaving a long tail to attach it to the head.
Neck
Join (106) Snow White to the back loop of 5th st down from the left ear.
2 ch, working into the back loop only work 1 htr in next st, 2 htr in each of following 2 sts, 3 htr in next st. 2 ch. (8 sts + 2 ch). Fasten off, leaving a bit of a tail. Stitch the end of the chain in behind the ear. We’ll work 4 sts into the 2 chain loop so secure it well.
Join (393) Charcoal to 1st st of the neck where shown.
1 ch, working into back loop only work 1 dc in same st as join, 1 dc in each of next 3 sts, 2 htr in each of following 2 sts, 1 dc in each of last 2 sts, into 2 ch loop work 2 dc and 2 htr. (14 sts). Don’t fasten off the charcoal.
Front Leg
Join (074) Mercury to 1st st of Charcoal where shown.
4 ch, miss 1st 2 ch, work 1 htr in each remaining ch, 1 htr in join, 1 htr in each of next 4 sts, 2 htr in each of following 3 sts, 1 htr in each st to last st, change to the Charcoal left, 2 ch and turn and work 1 htr in st left. Sl st the Charcoal and Mercury together and fasten off.
Join (106) Snow White 5 sts up from the end of the leg.
Work 1 dc in each of the next 7 sts, sl st in the following st. Fasten off.
Join (393) Charcoal to back loop only of 1st st before Snow White where shown.
Working into the back loop only work 1 sl st in each st to st after Snow White. Fasten off.
Join (074) Mercury to back loop only of 3rd Charcoal sl st.
1 ch, working into the back loop only work 1 dc in the same st as join, 1 dc in each of next 2 sts, 2 htr in the following st, 3 tr in the next st, 2 htr in the following st, 1 htr in each st to end of Mercury. Fasten off.
Join (393) Charcoal to back loop only to st before Mercury.
Work 1 sl st in the back loop only of each of the next 6 sts. Fasten off.
Back Leg
Join (074) Mercury to back loop only in 3rd last st of Charcoal where shown.
Row 1: 6 ch, miss 1st ch, work 1 dc in each remaining ch, 1 dc in same st as join, 1 dc in each of next 3 sts. Turn.
Row 2: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each st. Turn.
Row 3: 1 ch, work 1 sl st in each st of the leg. Fasten off.
Join (106) Snow White to the top of the back leg where shown.
2 ch, work 2 htr in same st as join, 1 htr in each of next 2 sts, 1 tr in following st, 1 htr in each of next 2 sts, 1 tr in following st, 1 dtr in each of next 4 sts, 1 tr in following st, 1 htr in next st, 1 dc in following st, sl st in last st. Fasten off.
Join (074) Mercury to 1st st of Snow White where shown.
2 ch, work 1 tr in same st as join, 1 tr in each of next 5 sts, 1 htr in following st, 1 dc in each of next 6 sts, sl st in following st. Fasten off.
Join (393) Charcoal to 1st st of Snow White along the bottom where shown.
Work 1 sl st in each st to 1st st along back, 1 ch, work 1 dc in each of 1st 12 sts along back, 1 sl st in each remaining st to under ear. Fasten off.
Front Claws
Join (238) Powder Pink to the side end of the leg where shown.
2 ch, sl st in 2nd ch from hook, sl st in the same place as join, (2 ch, sl st in 2nd ch from hook, sl st in end of leg) 2 times. Fasten off.
Back Claws
Join (238) Powder Pink to the side end of the leg where shown.
2 ch, sl st in 2nd ch from hook, sl st in the same place as join, (2 ch, sl st in 2nd ch from hook, sl st in end of leg) 2 times. Fasten off.
Side Claw
Join (238) Powder Pink about halfway up the back leg where shown.
3 ch, miss 1st ch, sl st in each remaining ch and in the same place as join. Fasten off.
Tail
Join (393) Charcoal to the last sl st at the bottom of the body where shown. I left a long tail to use for the neatening row.
Row 1: 2 ch, work 1 htr in same st as join, 1 dc in next st, 1 tr in following st. Turn. (3 sts)
Row 2: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each st. Turn. (3 sts)
Row 3: 1 ch, work 1 dc in 1st st, 1 htr in next st, 1 tr in last st. Turn. (3 sts)
Row 4: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each st. Turn. (3 sts)
Row 5: 1 ch, work 1 dc in 1st st, 1 htr in next st, 1 tr in last st. Turn. (3 sts)
Row 6: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each st. Turn. (3 sts)
Row 7: 1 ch, work 1 dc in 1st st, 1 htr in next st, 1 tr in last st. Turn. (3 sts)
Row 8: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each st. Turn. (3 sts)
Row 9: 1 ch, work 1 dc in 1st st, 1 htr in next st, 1 tr in last st. Turn. (3 sts).
Change to (110) Black. I left a long tail and took it to the other side for the neatening row and fastened off the Charcoal leaving a long tail.
Row 10: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each st. Turn. (3 sts)
Row 11: 1 ch, work 1 dc in 1st st, 1 htr in next st, 1 tr in last st. Turn. (3 sts)
Row 12: 3 ch, work 1 tr in 1st st, 1 htr in next st, 1 dc in last st. Turn. (3 sts)
Row 13: 1 ch, work 1 dc in 1st st, 1 htr in next st, 1 tr in last st. Turn. (3 sts)
Row 14: 3 ch, work 1 tr in 1st st, 1 htr in next st, 1 dc in last st. Turn. (3 sts)
Row 15: 1 ch, work 1 dc in 1st st, 1 htr in next st, 1 tr in last st. Turn. (3 sts)
Row 16: 3 ch, work 1 tr in 1st st, 1 htr in next st, 1 dc in last st. Turn. (3 sts)
Row 17: 1 ch, work 1 dc in 1st st, 1 htr in next st, 1 tr in last st. Turn. (3 sts)
Row 18: 3 ch, work 1 tr in 1st st, 1 htr in next st, 1 dc in last st. Turn. (3 sts)
Row 19: 1 ch, work 1 dc in 1st st, 1 htr in next st, 1 tr in last st. Turn. (3 sts)
Row 20: 3 ch, work 1 tr in 1st st, 1 htr in next st, 1 dc in last st. Turn. (3 sts)
Row 21: 1 ch, work 1 dc in 1st st, 1 htr in next st, 1 tr in last st. Turn. (3 sts)
Row 22: 3 ch, work 1 tr in 1st st, 1 htr in next st, 1 dc in last st. Turn. (3 sts)
Row 23: 1 ch, work 1 dc in 1st st, 1 htr in next st, 1 tr in last st. Turn. (3 sts)
Row 24: 3 ch, work a joined tr over the 3 sts. Fasten off.
Neatening Row
Using the colours of the tail work 1 sl st in each st around loosely. Fasten off.
To Make Up
Weave in ends. Embroider on markings to the tail where colour changes and stitch the end of the tail down if desired.
Stitch the blaze to the head.
Attach the nose.
Sew the eye areas to the head with the chain stitched down to the sides of the nose.
Attach a black bead in the centre of each eye area.
Add a white dot in the middle of each bead.
And there’s the finished possum applique. I’ve also made it in different sizes.
