Welcome to my crochet pheasant pattern. This is a request that I received. The finished pheasant applique will look like this.

Crochet Pheasant Pattern
Abbreviations
- st – stitch
- sts – stitches
- ch – chain
- sl st – slip stitch
- dc – double crochet
- htr – half treble crochet
- tr – treble crochet
Materials Used
- Crochet cotton or wool, I used Scheepjes Maxi Sweet Treat 2 ply crochet cotton colours (388) Rust, (401) Dark Teal, (106) Snow White, (404) English Tea, (390) Poppy Rose, (162) Black Coffee and (179) Topaz.
- A crochet hook, I used a 1mm hook.
- Scissors.
- Darning needle to weave in ends.
- Sewing thread and needle to stitch the pheasant together.
- Black and grey thread to embroider on eye and markings.
Size
Large Pheasant (Using 8 ply crochet cotton & a 3mm hook)
21.5cm x 17cm or 8.5” x 6.75”
Medium Pheasant (Using 4 ply crochet cotton & a 1.5mm hook)
18cm x 12cm or 7” x 4.75”
Small Pheasant (Using 2 ply crochet cotton & a 1mm hook)
14cm x 7.5cm or 5.5” x 3.75”
Head and Body
Using Dark Teal (401) work 3 ch.
Row 1: Miss 1 ch and work 1 dc in each remaining ch. Turn. (2 sts)
Row 2: 1 ch, work 2 dc in 1st st and 1 htr and 1 tr in last st. Turn. (4 sts)
Row 3: 3 ch, work 1 tr in 1st st, 1 htr in next st, 1 dc in each of last 2 sts. Turn. (4 sts)
Row 4: 1 ch, work 2 dc in each of 1st 2 sts, a joined tr over last 2 sts. Turn. (5 sts)
Row 5: 3 ch, work a joined tr over 1st 2 sts, 1 htr in next st, 1 dc in each remaining st. Turn. (4 sts)
Row 6: 1 ch, work 2 dc in 1st st, 1 dc in next st, a joined dc over last 2 sts. Fasten off teal.
Join Snow White (106) to 1st st worked of previous row.
Row 7: 1 ch, work 1 dc in same st as ch, 1 dc in each st to last st, 2 dc in last st. Fasten off white.
Join Rust (388) to 1st st worked of previous row.
Row 8: 1 ch, work 2 dc in same st as ch, 1 dc in each st to end. Turn. (6 sts)
Row 9: 1 ch, work 2 dc in 1st st, 1 dc in each st to end. Turn. (7 sts)
Row 10: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each st to last st, 2 dc in last st. Turn. (8 sts)
Row 11: 1 ch, work 2 dc in 1st st, 1 dc in each st to end. Turn. (9 sts)
Row 12: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each st to last st, 2 dc in last st. Turn. (10 sts)
Row 13: 1 ch, work 2 dc in 1st st, 1 dc in each st to end. Turn. (11 sts)
Row 14: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each st to last st, 2 dc in last st. Turn. (12 sts)
Row 15: 1 ch, work 2 dc in 1st st, dc in each st to end. Turn. (13 sts)
Row 16: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each st to last st, 2 dc in last st. Turn. (14 sts)
Row 17: 1 ch, work 2 dc in 1st st, 1 dc in each st to end. Turn. (15 sts)
Row 18: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each st to last st, 2 htr in last st. Turn. (16 sts)
Row 19: 1 ch, work 2 dc in 1st st, 1 dc in each st to end. Turn. (17 sts)
Row 20: 1 ch, work a joined dc over 1st 2 sts, 1 dc in each st to last st, 2 dc in last st. Turn. (17 sts)
Row 21: 1 ch, work 2 dc in 1st st, 1 dc in each st to end. Turn. (18 sts)
Row 22: 1 ch, work a joined dc over 1st 2 sts, 1 dc in each st to last st, 2 htr in last st. Turn. (18 sts)
Row 23: 1 ch, work 2 dc in 1st st, 1 dc in each st to end. Turn. (19 sts)
Row 24: 1 ch, work a joined dc over 1st 2 sts, 1 dc in each st to last st, 1 htr in last st. Turn. (18 sts)
Row 25: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each st to last 2 sts, a joined dc over last 2 sts. Turn. (17 ch)
Row 26: 1 ch, work a joined dc over 1st 2 sts, 1 dc in each st to end. Turn. (16 sts)
Row 27: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each st to last 2 sts, a joined dc over last 2 sts. Turn. (15 sts)
Row 28: 1 ch, work a joined dc over 1st 2 sts, 1 dc in each st to end. (14 sts) Don’t fasten off.
Neatening Row
Don’t turn work after row 28. 2 ch, work a joined htr over 1st 2 sts, 1 htr in each of next 2 sts and a joined htr over following 2 sts.
Work 1 sl st in each st up the back. Join in white and work a sl st over the white row and then join dark teal, work 1 sl st in each st around head, join white for 1 sl st, then join in rust and work 1 sl st in each st down the side of body but not along bottom. Don’t fasten off.
4 ch, work 1 dc in 2nd ch from hook, 1 htr in next st, 1 tr in following st, sl st in 3rd st along bottom, sl st in next st, 1 dc in following st, 5 ch, 1 dc in 2nd ch from hook, 1 htr in next st, 1 tr in each of following 2 sts. Miss 2 sts on bottom and sl st in next st. 2 ch, sl st in the side of the htr, 1 tr in next st, 1 htr in each of following 2 sts, 1 dc in each of next 2 sts, 1 htr in each remaining st. Fasten off.
Beak
Join English Tea (404) cotton to head about 6 sts up from the white stripe.
3 ch, work a joined tr over next 2 sts. Fasten off.
Face Marking
Using Poppy Rose (390) make a magic loop.
1 ch, work 2 dc in circle, 1 ch, sl st in circle, 2 ch, work a joined tr in circle. Pull circle tight and fasten off.
Tail
Using Topaz (179) work 31 ch.
Row 1: Miss 1st 2 ch and work 1 sl st in each of next 3 sts, 1 dc in each remaining ch. Work 34 ch.
Row 2: Miss 1st 2 ch and work 1 sl st in each of next 3 sts, 1 dc in each remaining ch. Work 36 ch.
Row 3: Miss 1st 2 ch and work 1 sl st in each of next 3 sts, 1 dc in each remaining ch. Fasten off.
Wing
Using Black Coffee (162) work 3 ch.
Row 1: Miss 1st ch and work 1 dc in each remaining ch. Turn. (2 sts)
Row 2: 1 ch, work 2 dc in each st. Turn. (4 sts)
Row 3: 1 ch, work 2 dc in 1st st, 1 dc in each st to last st, 2 dc in last st. Turn. (6 sts)
Row 4: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each st to end. Turn. (6 sts)
Row 5: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each st to last 2 sts, a joined dc over last 2 sts. Turn. (5 sts)
Row 6: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each st. Turn. (5 sts)
Row 7: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each st. Turn. (5 sts)
Row 8: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each st. Turn. (5 sts)
Row 9: 1 ch, work 2 dc in 1st st, 1 dc in each st to end. Turn. (6 sts)
Row 10: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each st to end. Turn. (6 sts)
Row 11: 1 ch, work 2 dc in 1st st, 1 dc in each st to end. Turn. (7 sts)
Row 12: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each st to last st, 2 dc in last st. Turn. (8 sts)
Row 13: 1 ch, work a joined dc over 1st 2 sts, 1 dc in each st to end. Turn. (7 sts)
Row 14: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each st to last 2 sts, a joined dc over last 2 sts. Turn. (6 sts)
Row 15: 1 ch, work a joined dc over 1st 2 sts, 1 dc in each st to end. Turn. (5 sts)
Row 16: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each st to last 2 sts, a joined dc over last 2 sts. Turn. (4 sts)
Row 17: 1 ch, work a joined dc over 1st 2 sts, 1 dc in each st to end. Turn. (3 sts)
Row 18: 1 ch, work 1 dc in 1st st, a joined dc over last 2 sts. Turn. (2 sts)
Row 19: 1 ch, work a joined dc over the 2 sts. Don’t fasten off.
Neatening Row
1 ch, work 1 dc in each st around. Join with a sl st in top of 1st st. Fasten off.
Front Leg
Join English Tea (404) cotton to front leg stump.
15 ch.
Miss 2 ch and work 1 sl st in each of next 4 ch, 5 ch, miss 2 ch and work 1 sl st in each of next 3 ch and in the 1st 3 of original ch, 3 ch. Sl st in same st as last sl st and work 1 sl st in each st to end. Sl st into stump and fasten off.
Work the back leg the same as front leg.
To Make Up
Weave in ends. Embroider an eye on the face marking.
Stitch the face marking to the head.
Embroider black markings on the tail catching the tail pieces together with the black thread but leaving it apart at the end of the tail.
Sew the tail to the body.
Embroider markings on wing.
Stitch the wing to the body.
Embroider markings on body.
